MX5 NA6 from Australia

Made a few posts on here so I thought I would make a post with my car in it. Sorry but at the moment it is naturally aspirated, however you never know what the future holds...

Worst Mod - Roof air scoop. It is great for ducting air into the cabin but it is noisy when on the road. On the track with a helmet on you don't hear it.

Best Mod - Custom ITB airbox and getting the fuel level to display on the IQ3.

Next mod - custom wing mounts as the current setup has too much side to side movement. There will be bracing inside the boot as well as the new mounts.

Which 6 speed is it Mark?

I always worry about mine breaking!

FrankB 06-22-2015 09:37 AM

Love the build, that ITB air box setup is pretty neat. Welcome!

Eipgam 06-22-2015 02:45 PM

Timk - OEM 6 speed

FrankB - thanks it took a while to get the air box right. For a RH drive car it fits under the OEM bonnet as well as retains the booster and clutch in their OEM positions. For LH drive cars you do not have those constraints.

What has been done to it for it to be "built for up to 400 Nm of torque", or is that how they come?

Eipgam 06-26-2015 04:08 PM

The gearbox was rebuilt just before I purchased it from Victoria. Gears were replaced by deburred, polished, Cyro treated then shotpeened ones.

The fuel guage setup is a sensor from Iron Canyon http://www.ironcanyonmotorsports.com/icm-fuel-sender/, this is then hooked into the Haltech PS1000 (and into the Innovate data logger) to be displayed by the IQ3.

Black line is speed (kmh) and the blue/green line is the fuel level (ltrs).

Home to coffee about 80 kms.

Well been a while since this was updated...

It is still naturally aspirated

At WTAC 2019

However two very concerned US based Miata owners decided to do an intervention (Ryan and Moti) as to why I was staying NA.... Well a funny thing happened, it has been decided that putting a forced induction 2.5ltr MZR into a NA6 would be 'smart".

Why into the NA6 and not the NC? Under World Time Attack Challenge rules the NA6 is allowed to be 893kgs whereas the NC is 1,055, hence I get a 162kg advantage using the NA chassis.

Will start a new thread when the serious parts of the build start.

Current concerns:
  1. Space on Right Hand Side for exhaust, turbo and steering column. The car has already had the brake booster deleted and the remote fluid reservoirs can be relocated to inside the car.
  2. What gearbox to use. Have access to a BMW ZF 6 speed or just go with the OEM NC 5/6 speed. Using the NC is less work.
  3. Swapping the NA subframes for NB ones. Clubsprint requires the use of OEM subframes.
  4. Front/rear hubs again these must be OEM.
Non issues
  1. Current Haltech PS1000 can be used in new build, just requires a new engine loom.
  2. Current installed Racepak Smartwire can be used
  3. Aero - have a new wing to be built. This has more downforce than my current one but less drag. Front air dam is being re-designed. OEM Rear bumper going back on (not allowed bumper cuts in clubsprint)

Any suggestions/ideas appreciated

The person on the left is 50% responsible for the new direction of this build :)
