Default My Mazda 1.6 powered festiva

Hey all of you fellow car lovers, I thought Id say hey!
I hope none of ya hate me for having a festiva in your Miata forum!
I signed up for Miata turbo because I swapped the 1.6 L Dohc motor in my 1993 Ford Festiva.

Except the motor I used is out of a 94 mx3. So It’s pretty much the same as the Miata engines but it has a MAF, a 9.4:1 comp ratio and similar cylinder head, and transversly mounted motor, obviously.
Right at the moment I am putting back together the cylinder head after I spent about 12 hours doing a little port and polish basically cleaned up the intake side but a bit more of a porting on the exhaust side. Cleaning out the valve lash adjusters some are seized. New Valve stem seals blah blah blah anyway!

I have the mspnp2 arriving next week
gonna hook it up and get familiar with the MS tuner studio with auto tune. Before I do anything with turboing.
still have to weld the bung on the exhaust, actually I still have to complete welding together my custom exhaust, but I have the Innovate Motorsport Wideband sensor and gauge.

This is by far the most knowledgable place To find for information to do with megasquirt tuning and turbocharging the 1.6 L engines. Which Im doing in organized steps
so I look forward to talking to some of you in the DIY turbo section and mega squirt section.
cheers

If I'm not mistaken there are a few people here who have done exactly what you did. I'm sure they'll be around to chime in.

I just about have my car up and running, well it is but megasquirt not hooked up yet.
as I’ve been searching threads on the site about various turbo set ups on the 1.6 I really had no idea just how much power the stock 1.6 can actually take. And I also found out that the 94 B6d Engine had forged internals too and was originally a turbo engine.

I think I have undershot what power I would like To pull out of it.

And I did see somewhere, quote “ ha you think your going to be satisfied with a low boost goal like that, just wait till you drive it a while” end quote,
i was just going to upgrade to some 95 1.8 injectors with mild 6psi on a td04
and yep I find my self there too and I Dont even have the my turbo manifold made yet
im probably going to have to get myself some flowforce injectors, and a clutch kit!

It really is addictive in some way.

When I first drove my turbo miata at ~8psi wastegate (GT2560R), I thought "Well, if it would end here power wise, I am totally satisfied".
But once you turn it up to like 14-15psi, wastegate doesn't feel that fast anymore and you think "dude, what about 20psi out of a bigger turbo?". It's crazy...

Even my wife said - after she had to go with me on the Autobahn to do some pulls, so I could fiddle a bit with tunerstudio on the fly - how slow our Z4 3.0i felt the next day.
She really said " I'm miscalibrated now"

This week my sister asked me to change her brakes on her 1.0i Peugeot 206, 60bhp. Went for a test drive after that. Well, yeah, I'm miscalibrated, too Need to drive slow cars from time to time, to appreciate all the horses

Hey! I have a buddy building a b6t festiva. I might be able to help with some of the MS stuff, but I also have some questions for you!

1) What transmission did you use? OE festiva trans? Or did you get a G series transmission to go with the motor?
1a) if you went G series, what did you do for axles? I believe you'd have to convert to aspire/mx3/capri hubs of some kind. Not sure about this one.

2) Do you have any pics? I'd like to see how you mounted everything.

3) Did you use the OE festiva harness, or did you swap to the mx3 harness? I have a ms1pnp that we're going to put in my friends car. It's supposed to be PNP on his festiva (have yet to test that, but DIYautotune says it is). The plan is to run the OE festiva harness, with the MSPnP unit, and wire in COPS for ignition and a miata CAS for timing control. Not sure if this is going to work, but that's the working plan so far.

Welcome!

Welcome!
I kept the f25mr trans that was already with it. And I swapped over the mx3 harness. Because too many of the wire pin outs Didn’t match up and I had the whole MX3 anyway
i used 93 escort hubs/steering knuckles and 94 mx3 axles, I had to cut them shorter and weld them together with sleeves, I copied a fellows technique who was pullin 180hp on them and they where just fine. don’t remember what car he had though.
But eventually I’d like to get a set of axles made

the larger hub rose the strut mount up 2 inches so I had to make raised strut mounts, but I used strut tubes from an mr2 and slid some yellow adjustable koni’s In there with a diy coilover setup.
There may have been an easier way to do it but I wanted the performance of
koni.

i have lots of pics available and a little build thread here
