I dont know who built it but it needs all kinds of work :vash: I want to get this thing track ready, but for now I would atleast like to get it autox reliable. I have some over heating issues and from reading this forum for the last week I realize basically the entire cooling system was done wrong :vash:

Why does it look like it has an AFM from a 90-93? What is the fuel management? If it is the OEM with bandaids, then you need to recirculate the BOV back in pre turbo. Also, get a clamp on that fuel line. That is just asking for trouble.

instead of starting a new thread (but I will if I should) I thought I would post up my problems in here with lots of pics and video lol....


first of all I noticed I have bubbles in the coolant res. I noticed this cause when I was driving yesterday I started smelling coolant and so I pulled over popped the hood and I had coolant all over the power steering rack. It didnt over heat but I took that time to go eat. When I came back I had a small puddle. I drove home a few miles away to investigate further but no more coolant leaking... weird. but I did notice the bubbling in the res.

I let it totally cool and noted that when cool the fluid in the res sits perfectly at full. when hot it goes about an inch higher.

im not sure what year the afm is. It is running a voodoo box supposedly tuned by begi at 8 psi.

here is the only pic I have at the moment that includes the whole thing. its raining like crazy or Id go take a closer picture of it.

I ordered an aluminum radiator and fans since I only have one fan And im overheating after an hour or more of driving.

but I have this problem which makes me think it wont fit when it gets here.

also I have a very very oddly thick looking ic. I was told maybe that was blocking a lot of my air too?

The bubbles most likely indicate a failed seal between the head/block. Since failed MLS gaskets on the 1.8s are fairly uncommon, I'm predicting that the engine was overheated pretty severely at one point, and you have a warped head as a result.

The coolant hose and the intake charge pipe being near each other are insignificant.

Consider removing the "heat wrap" on the downpipe/header, heat wrap can lead to more problems down the road. Also, because of the heat wrap, I can't see well enough to figure out what's going on under there

You are overheating because the radiator is not properly ducted - the air is going around the radiator instead of through it. I'm willing to bet that it's more of a problem at highway speeds than in stop/go traffic.

The smoke coming from your downpipe/turbo is exhaust gasses. Something in your exhaust system isn't sealed up properly. May require a gasket. May be loose bolts.

you are correct that it seems to overheat on the highway but driving around town its fine.

thats what I thought too, but loooking at it closer I think its burning whatever hose is coming out right there. im guessing heater core hose?

got some video of the possible leak location. any ideas how to route that line so it wont make contact with the manifold? lol
