Hey, I am a 26 year old software developer currently living in Indy.
I have a red 99 5MT with an open diff (that will change eventually) that is pretty much stock (I put in a WOLO air horn). I am lucky enough to say that my first 2 cars I ever owned were FI, the first being a 98 Grand Prix GTP and the second a 02 Audi A6 w/ 2.7TT. Despite being N/A, the miata is by far the most fun of the three. Eventually, I will want to change that. I was pretty set on getting an FFS SC, since I am really just looking for the flattest torque curve you can get, but it hasn't happened yet so you still have time. If I have somewhere to work on the car this winter, I will definitely be putting on the FM VMaxx kit (taking suggestions as to which one to get). I know I want something pretty adjustable, as I think I have learned a decent amount of car setup from gaming (specifically Live For Speed), but I am unsure of how much adjustment I really need. But if I had a place, I might do both the coilovers and a SC/turbo. I am not looking for a track monster, this will be purely for street and maybe a few autocrosses (and maybe a track day or 2 eventually). But easy (and fun) driving on the street is much more important to me than getting 400ft-lbs 5 RPM before the redline. Thanks for reading, and commence the berating for mentioning I want a supercharger :noob: Edit: Oh yeah, pictures. I only have one decent one, but it is already on my credit card: https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1344461760 We will keep it low-quality so you can't see that she needs new paint ;) |
Welcome .

Welcome, but keep away from the FFS SC. Keep far away from it.

You two aren't very good at reading thread titles.
Oh. Damn! |
Don't buy an FFS kit.

If you buy that FFS kit after reading even a single thread on this forum, you are more retarded than the kraut who thought tucking those tiny K03s way up close to a 2.7t before shoehorning it into the B5 was a good idea.

And yes, I had k16 Buehn Bombs in my S4.
|
why a flat torque curve?
|
The tq curve on a stock car is pretty flat. If that's your goal, I don't see any need to waste any extra money.

I love this car, but it is still the slowest car I have ever owned, and I plan to change that. If I had the time/knowhow/money, I would just pull the 4.6L from my MkVIII and shove it in there. But since I am new to the car modification world, I figure a turbo would be a bit more cost effective. Can I still get one even if I don't need a 350HP fully built track beast? One serious question I need answered is how much of the work can I expect to do myself? I understand a lot about how everything works, I just have basically no experience working on cars. I helped my roommate take his transmission out of his '95M last year and put it back after it was rebuilt. Am I crazy thinking that I could do some of this myself (with the help of a neighbor who works on all his cars but probably has little experience with turbos)? Or should I plan on professional installation from the start? And what will that cost me? Thanks for your help already. |
With the help of this forum, you can do everything yourself. I don't think you fully appreciate the resource you've tapped into.

That's what I like to hear!

lol@260ft-lbs of tq. That's more than the A6 had.
You guys win. I have always liked turbos better than SCs, but I thought that an SC would be better for the street and a turbo better for the track. But between that and reading this thread, I am starting to think a GT2560 might be a better idea. |
the above plot is a 2560 on a 99 motor (car weighed less than 2000lbs). Of course, coupled with good manifolds, but easy to recreate none-the-less.

i thought it was was on his 99 block. unless that was after he blew it? i know he kept his underdrive pulley on it which is a no-no and it blew up at one point.
or was that just his 270rwhp pull, before the BEGi IM? |
