Vary Tarbo. Such Wantz. Wow! - New Guy from Louisiana

Hey fellas

My name is Zack, and I am down here in southern Louisiana. Couple of weeks ago, I picked up a 2000 MX-5 with a bad motor for roughly $2k. It was a really good deal, and came with a replacement motor, along with some goodies like a set of ARP head studs, Cometic head gasket, and AEM induction pipe setup.

We swapped the motor, and I've put about 1,000 miles on it. Absolutely love this thing! However, I'm a "more" kinda guy, so I ventured over here just to see what my options are for "moar powa" when I decide it is time.

Here's me acting like a goofball the night we got the engine replacement done.

Outside of that - this is my first NB car, and 2nd Miata (the first was an NA automatic that I had for 3 days and sold because, well, it was an automatic)

I own a small, growing performance parts business that caters to older 70's and 80's sports cars. I've also had lots of 300ZX's, MGB's, and early watercooled Veedubs. (I'm an eclectic fellow).

I look forward to learning what I can here on the forum.
Thanks guys

Very cool.

Where you from? I'm in Houma.

Gumbeaux 11-24-2015 10:53 AM

I am up in Abbeville (about 20 miles straight south of Lafayette)

Hello.

Welcome. If you want more power and performance, this is the place to be

Trent 11-24-2015 11:05 AM

Mother-in-law is from Abbeville. Small world.

Gumbeaux 11-24-2015 11:06 AM

Thanks guys. I am still swapping my Z31 (mid-80's) Nissan 300ZX, so that boosted toy will have to get finished before I get to doing the Miata. Having not fooled with Miatas much though, I'm gonna do the best I can trying to learn mysef.

18psi 11-24-2015 11:09 AM

compared to the nightmare (IMO) that is the 80's/90's z-car, the miata is like a tricycle to work on
this should be easy for you

Gumbeaux 11-24-2015 11:12 AM

Well - it's not too bad. My business manufactures parts for the 80's Z-cars.

I want nothing to do with working on a 90's Z32 chassis though. There's a whole lotta nope trying to work in that engine bay.

18psi 11-24-2015 11:14 AM

I worked on ONE z32. Said, NOPE never again. And it wasn't even a turbo one either, I can't imagine how much worse the turbo ones are

Trent 11-24-2015 11:18 AM

What's your business? I have two friends that run Z31's that live in Florida.

Gumbeaux 11-24-2015 11:19 AM

It's possible I know them in this crazy Facebook connected world, Trent.
I am with Acadiana Sports Car Orphanage

Said the same thing when I tried to change spark plugs in an FC rx-7

On a side note - do any of you guys have to wear different shoes just to drive your car?

I have size 14 feet, and my feet get all hung up in the pedals unless I wear these super narrow, uncomfortable shoes I found at Walmart for like 10 bucks - like deck shoes almost.

Even my MGB-GT's, I could still drive with my sneakers on LOL

psyber_0ptix 11-24-2015 11:28 AM

get smaller feet installed

Gumbeaux 11-24-2015 11:29 AM

I was thinking the foot mod option was there, but it's hard to re-calibrate them after you dremel some off the top and sides. :D

18psi 11-24-2015 11:31 AM

check Faefloras thread for detailed instructions with a sawzall

psyber_0ptix 11-24-2015 11:33 AM

I prefer hand tools. A jewelers saw works well for great detail.

But back to more important questions. Okra of File powder in gumbo? Or is it seasonally dependent (i.e. file when okra is not in season)

Gumbeaux 11-24-2015 11:33 AM

Sawzall you say?

<Cue G'N'Rs Appetite for Destruction CD>

Gumbeaux 11-24-2015 11:41 AM

OOF. Breaking out the hard hitting questions - I'll eat Okra in gumbo, but outside of that I won't touch the stuff. So many folks bag and freeze okra around here, if you want it - you can find it.

I could sure use a bowl of Chicken and Sassage gumbo right about now.
