96 DIYPNP Issues
 
Let me know if this belongs in the MSPNP sub-FAQ.

I have a 96 Manual with 1.8L motor. It's all stock on the controls side - still using MAF.

Just ordered and put together a DIYPNP unit from DIYAutotune.com. I'm decent with a soldering iron and went back over my work 3 times to verify the proper connections and components. I had issues loading the firmware and msq with my netbook and a usb to serial converter, so I loaded them with my PC directly from a serial connection with no problems. I even reloaded both to verify I'd done it correctly. All software verifications were OK. I'm using the msq file for the stock 96-97 given by DIYAutotune.

When I hook up on stimulator, the RPM is like 65500 or so. The "Get Current" value for the TPS not connected to vehicle is like 890 or so. When I hook up to the vehicle - without stimulator obviously - I get 100 for the TPS signal for open throttle and closed throttle. I verified resistance of the TPS at about 4 Ohms closed and inf open.

So, the reading for TPS signal can't be correct, right? How about the RPM signal. Does that value show up until the vehicle is started?

What might be wrong? I'm fairly certain my hardware is good to go. Could this be a communications problem with the USB converter? Maybe I should go ahead and drop the $20 on the DIYAutotune USB to Serial converter.

I also tried to start the car with the baseline msq file using the existing TPS values - no go. The car tries to turn over, but doesn't seem like it's getting fuel and/or spark.

Oh, and the fan runs continuously while the key is in the "on" position. So, there's power on the board for sure. Does the fan stay on all of the time, or just with the key in the "on" position?

Anyone else had similar problems? What was your solution?

Somebody has to have some kind of advice. I'm running out of options on my own.

I'm using the latest version of MegaTune 2.25.

I have a microsquirt module and I loaded the appropriate MSII Extra firmware.

Also loaded the latest baseline msq found here: http://www.diyautotune.com/diypnp/ap...97-18bp-mt.zip

I get 17 warning messages when opening up to burn: "Although the file was written successfully, there were 17 warnings written to the audit.log file. You may want to review the file before sending and burning data." I try to access the audit.log file in the MS2 Extra folder and it tells me it's empty. Where do I access the warnings? Are the warnings normal?

I saw a similar writeup by longuyen88, but I'm fairly certain it's not the soldering of the tps. I looked it over and it's pretty good work.

Someone suggested to him verifying that his trigger inputs to MT are correct. How do I go about doing that. I see a trigger wizard in MT to match timing but no explicit trigger inputs.

Any help would be appreciated. Noob to site but not noob to working on cars or DC electronics.

1) your TPS is incorrectly wired in your DIYPNP
2) 65500 is a configuration error in your settings, usually 2 output using the same port.
3) the error messages are normal-ish, its becuase you're not using the same firmware as DIY did when they created that tune.

Thanks for the suggestions. I guess I'll break down the solder joints and do them over for the TPS jumper from main to connector board. I can verify that the jumper runs from TPS to 3F as indicated in the application specific instructions.

DIY told be to check the voltage at the TPS jumper, so I did that with it off the car and plugged into the stimulator PS. I got 0.3VDC, which does seem a bit strange to me.

Besides the main board to connector board jumper, what other components does the TPS signal rely directly on?

Also, longuyen88 had a similar tach issue on his 94 that he resolved when he reloaded the basemap here: https://www.miataturbo.net/showthrea...t=43005&page=2 Any thoughts?

When you say 2 outputs using the same port, do you mean at the serial connection, or at the wiring harness? Sounds like it could be the result of solder spill-over in either case.

no it's a software configuration within your MS, two settings will be set to use the same output, say tacho out AND boost control are assigned to PA0 (an ECU pin).

I had this same problem I didn't fallow the exact instruction on flashing the firmware and it gave me the same problem. I would ask ben for the link on how to flash it.

Please use TunerStudio and not MegaTune. MegaTune does not work correctly with the 3.0.3 code line (and MS3).

Ben, can we go ahead and make a couple changes to the DIYPNP documentation and 96-97 Miata application doc:
1. The 96-97 application doc should show the flyback diode being installed in R5 with band to +12V. I realize that this is presented in the basic DIYPNP documentation in a very convoluted way, but I made the mistake of not adding it at first and I've seen at least 3 other threads of people with that same issue.
2. The DIYPNP documentation tells you to open up MegaTune for loading msq and sensor calibration. Can you change this to use TunerStudio as you have indicated.

OK, last thing. You're saying that MS doesn't work right with the 3.0.3 firmware, but I loaded the MS2 Extra 2.1.0 as the "alpha" on the version 3 firmware scared me a bit. Should I load the 3.0.3u alpha firmware instead and then use TunerStudio? Can we make the necessary changes for future users in the DIYPNP assembly instructions?

Also, is it possible that this might have something to do with my TPS signal issue?

I found a resolution to my previously described problems. They were all software issues and not hardware. The DIYPNP Installation docs should outline specifically to use version 3 MS2 Extra firmware and to use TunerStudio and not Mega Tune. Also, the msq for the 96 and 97 should have the tach output dissabled. Somehow, that was affecting me getting a TPS signal. I'm assuming they were set to the same pins. After making these changes, the car started right up.

The car idles decently well, but it shows 2X the actual RPM. I think I've seen this same problem some place else, so I'll search again for it, but does anyone know the quick fix for this issue?

96/97 requires tach output enabled otherwise the dash tacho doesn't work...

Richy,

The tach works, but it shows 1/2 the actual RPM at idle. My car likes to idle high around 1500 to 1700rpm, so I haven't been driving on it. I want to get the idle RPM down first. Can anyone tell me what their narrowband reading is at idle? My narrowband is reading 0.17V, which seems low to me and means that the car would be running lean. Lean running might be causing the rpm overrun. What should the baseline msq be running at idle for rpm? Can someone send me a log of their idle outputs on a 96 or 97? It would help a lot for comparison. Also, where can I find the narrowband reading in MegaLogViewer? Load, AFRLoad and MAP all read the same, is that right? Another question: With no IAT, should I really be using Speed Density or MAFMAP? MAFMAP makes more sense to me since I'm not measuring temp directly.

Glad to finally be getting some data for tuning!
