Best spot to mount IAT?
3 Attachment(s)
MS is in and I'm preparing for AFM removal, what do you think would be the best place to mount IAT? keeping in mind heat soak etc etc.
I've bought the GM IAT and will eventually use it, but thinking the stock sensor (in the photo) might be better to use; in that it's heaps smaller easier to insulate, plastic body doesn't absorb and transfer bonnet-soaked-heat into the sensor as much as the GM metal body sensor. I've also done a rough characteristic check on the stock sensor...looks a bit wonky on the graph, probably need a heaps more data to get a function out, its taking shape. Maybe some pics of where and how you have yours for some inspirations? |
put it wherever it will heatsoak least...like in the air box or something.

2. or is the induce air temp as air travels across the plastic intake pipe is too negligible to worry about? If this is the case then it make more sense putting it in the air box. 3. Wonder if someone mounted two sensors; one at either end of the intake pipe and get a rough idea of temp difference as air travel from filter to TB...would be interesting, because once you know that value you could in a way compensate for the difference in the MS firmware? 4. What about taking the above further and put an air temp sensor inside the intake manifold to see as close as possible what the air temp is as it enter the chamber. Maybe it's all unnecessary to know accurate IAT in the whole scheme of things. |
Dude go read the manual and do a little search while you are at it. This is the second thread I see with basic a question that either one the options I suggested above would have answer. :noob:
Put it in the fucking intercooler! |

Oh then airbox, if not you iz gonna getz soaked like a 14 year old at twilight premier.

While youre at it you can do this. It will keep your hands away from the keyboard
revlimiter.net - Intake Isolator revlimiter.net - NACA duct intake Unless you already have something like than. |

Youre welcome. Now :gtfo:

For NA? As far away from anything hot as you can get.

I have mine in the coldside end tank and it helped a lot. Still heat soaks after I shut the car down and start it hot, though.
Edit: missed that you're N/A. Here is how I ran mine previously: (you can just barely see it behind the upper rad hose) Attachment 203543 |
On an n/a car it doesn't much matter because the intake air temp is not that different from the airbox to the throttle body that it's going to cause problems tuning. The airbox is near the toasty warm exhaust parts, and the crossover tube is bathed in air that's heated by the radiator. I took my IAT and zip tied it near the open end of the snorkel that feeds the airbox. I intended that to be somewhat temporary as I was expecting to be turbocharged much sooner, but anyway, the car was tuned with the sensor where it is so I'm not moving it until I do go turbo. It's far enough away from exhaust parts and not in a hot airstream, and it never gets soaked to the point that it substantially affects how the car runs.

Since you got rid of the AFM why dont you point your inlet this way, and open a inlet in the headlight assembly to let in air??
Before you ask me where would you relocate the resevoir, IDK!, is just a thought. Attachment 203541 |

If you're asking me, its cause that was temporary until I made made this:
That was mainly for the OP, or anyone who plans on staying N/A for some time and wants to get lets heat soaked. |

When I was N/A I put it about 3" from the intake air horn. For your setup the airbox would work just as well.
|
mine's in the silicone coupler about 1" from the throttlebody. It does heatsoak since it's right behind the rad, but nothing that some tweaking of the coolant related airdensity settings can't fix

Ok thats kinda what I thought, and you are definitely correct. Although i've seen someone's setup that was in front of the radiator...that sounds ideal.
