Braineack MS3x Base Map Octane
 

Im referencing Braineacks base maps on trubokitty.com to create a base tune. Does anyone know if they are set up for 91 or 93 octane?

You shouldn't even be thinking about NOT getting the best gas you can get. I would even put 94 octane in there, just for safety reasons.

Yeah you should run the best gas you can get. In my case I ran shell 93 since that was highest octane before I switched to e85. I would also recommend dialing back the boosted areas 1 or 2 degrees if you are just starting to tune. Some people have reported knock on some base maps so it's not a bad decision to be conservative. Overall though imo the basemaps are a good starting point

Unfortunately 91 is the best fuel I can consistently get in my area. The only 93 I am aware of is E30 and only a hand full of stations have it. On top of that, sometimes I travel places that only have sub par 91 that makes my tuned MK7 GTI pull a ton of timing. Until I can get a knock monitoring device, im going to just pull 10% or 20% from the whole map.

I think that should be fine. I'm sure you can also find other examples of ignition maps with similar fuel. I'd be surprised if there wasn't a thread with a similar subject. If you are up for it you can also make some analog detcans pretty cheap and listen for knock that way. If you don't have ac or have a spare firewall hole the detcans can be permanent and easily stored in the cabin.

I'm planning to pick up one of the Link knock lights shortly and check my tune with it. I'm thinking I'll probably just leave it I'm my glovebox like you suggested .

I still have my electronic det cans someone here on the forum made and sold. That would be a nice thing to sell again if someone wanted a side gig.

I was running a trubokitty ms3x 99-00 base timing map on my car, and both 18PSI and my local tuner told me that timing was too aggressive. I think my tuner pulled out 5-6* of timing without losing any power on the dyno, so he told me the map I came in with was pretty aggressive.

I'm not at all dissing Scott, more iterating that a base map is exactly that, a base map that should be dialed in for your vehicle. That said if I were running his base map again I'd pull 5* out of the boosted areas right away.

That also said, that base map held up for 10+ track days on stock pistons and 91 octane so it obviously wasn't too terribly aggressive.

Man i wish i had luck with the electric versions. Idk maybe it was an error on my end but when I tried making my own they did not seem to work well compared to the analog ones I had.

Can you link the thread on those? I havent' heard of electronic ones before.

I just Googled it. I'm not sure if this is it or not because I can't read it carefully because I'm driving. Do a search within the site and maybe you'll find more information.

I have not tested these yet but I put this together. It will plug into my laptop so I can listen and record the session at the same time. There is a mic from a cell phone blu tooth setup under the shrink wrap behind the eye bolt. Will probably wrap that end more with some acoustic type wrap before installing to keep outside noise down.

Time is a hard variable to evaluate or understand when it comes to tuning. Listening for pinging is only a start. Reducing the timing and decreasing the afr for a short period solution will not net a safe tune. Engines build heat and the duration of the load can be the unforeseen killer. I have seen many motorcycles and cars go from one track to another with longer straights or hills and grenade. Its best to also read the plugs and look at the piston crowns. There is also fuel variability from manufacturer and season. I always recommend a street tune and a track for those that do both. Timming can only be reduced so much before the egt's start to run high.

My tuner started me out on a 91 octane base map, one that he developed over the last decade or so specifically for Miata BP engines. After I submitted my build details and requested the 91 octane tune I learned 93 was easy to get. When I moved to MN almost two decades ago I was driving a DIY, turbocharged Escort GT. I couldn't find much more than 91, it had an FMU plus timing/fuel piggybacks mainly tuned by ear, feel, and watching EGTemp.

I asked my tuner to switch over this his 93 octane map and once he finishes I'll copy the previous ignition table onto his tune and save a backup, 91 octane map. If I'm traveling (not likely in an MSM without cruise control) I can upload the 91 octane map using MSDroid on my phone until I can find better gas. One of these days in the next year or two I want to put mine on a dyno, after the built engine is installed. Mainly to have a tuner check timing under boost in person, hopefully after he helps guide me or gets knock protection activated and tuned to my engine.

This seems like a nice, easy to make setup. It would be nice if there was a way to sync your audio recording to your MS logs.

You mean like a sensor that detects knock?
