Cam Sync Sensor

18 Attachment(s)
My local dismantling yard keeps Mazda, Kia, Hyundai and Mitsubishi’s in the same portion of the yard. While getting some parts off a FWD 1.8 engine l looked over and noticed a cam angle sensor on the back of a Kia that looked about the same size as the Mazda CAS unit. Since Kia has a history of purchasing and redesigning Mazda engines I thought… Why not see if it fits.

My plan is to use this as a cam sync for my 36-1 trigger wheel and sequential injection. I know the stock CAS can be modified to work, but I thought this sensor assembly may be a better approach. Since I am a total n00b at electronics, I thought I would ask the experts.

So here are my questions:

1) Is it a Hall or VR sensor?
2) How should it be wired to an MS3?
3) If I cut half the CAS drive on the back of the stock cam off, can the remaining half-moon shape be used as a trigger signal?
4) If a tooth is ideal, what clock position should the “Tooth” on the back of the cam be at?
5) How wide should the gap between the sensor and tooth be?

That is a very nice find!

You can use a half moon so cutting half the CAS drive off will work perfectly.

I've seen those before. Could even be a cheap CAS blockoff, as those are more abundant in the Junkyards than NB's

all he'd have to do is grind down one half moon off the cam.

Does the sensor need to be shimmed to offer clearance to the cam? If grinding one of the half moons off, does one need to worry about balance of the cam?

I've been trying to learn about adding a trigger wheel and the CAS modifications; running wires and bolting things on, I can do but feel like I'm in over my head when it comes to the actual tuning setup (VR pot adjustments and syncing)

Funny I was just looking at this myself at the junkyard on sunday. Anybody get this to work?

Would it matter what side of the half moon was removed and would this be any advantage over just using the CAS?

any new developments?
