Default DB9 problems

I just bought an old laptop (Compaq Armada 4150T) that I was gonna use in my car to tune my MS. The problem is that now I can´t get any connection between Megatune and my MS. I have installed Megatune and upgraded it with spark´n extra exactly as I did on my other computer where there is a connection and everything works. It seems like the db9-port isn´t working and even though Im not a hacker I managed to check the systemfiles and communicatiosport-1 seems to be on. I can´t figure this out. Would be really grateful I someone could help me though I want to start tuning as soon as possible.

/Fredrik

Do you have anything else to test the COM1: with?
Is the cable staright or crossed (pin 3&4 (?) is supposed to be crossed on a null modem cable)?

Not really helping, just digging out things to think about.

I have looked everywhere trying to find something with 9pins and I don´t have anything else to test the port with. The cable is not the crossed type, I didn´t bought the crossed one though I was told that it wouldn´t work on MS when I bought the kit. ( sorry am a bit daft at computers, don´t know what null modem is)
The only differens is that my laptop has Windows 98 and my other computer has XP, but isn´t Megatune supose to work on old systems to?

AAhhh!! I got rather frustrated after my attempts this weekend so haven´t touched my laptop until today. I still can´t seem to get my laptop to communicate with my MS.
When I look the "MSQ information" both my computers has "MT Ver 4.00 MSnS format 029q" and I can´t find anything in my laptop that says that port 1 isn´t open.
I do however noticed that in MT on my laptop it´s added "p1" in the top left corner after "Megatune 2.25". What does "p1" stands for? Can the "p1" difference be the problem? Shouldn´t the 029q that you can download today be the same 029q that one where able to download a couple of month ago?
When I try to copy all the MT-files from my computer that function with MS to my laptop I must be missing some shared files or something cause that doesn´t work.
I do not want to loose all the settings I have done by installing the "p1" software in my first computer though it´s probably the same 029q anyway??

Any ideas? Do you think it´s my MT/MS software or my laptop? (do not answer CBC=Crap Behind Computer )

Can you reach MS with the configurator?

Has the serial port EVER worked on the laptop for you? (obviously the MS box is okay or you'd never get the firmware installed)

I'd check the device manager and see if there's a problem with the port. Reboot, check again. If it still shows com1 installed and functioning, try rebooting to safe mode, see if you have more than one com1.

Then, if you're feeling lucky, delete the com1 port, reboot, and see if it reinstalls. This can be risky with older computers.

As you probably understand I´m no hacker .I´m not sure how to reach MS with the configurator. I have only downloaded firmware by clicking on the files as it says in the manual. I have however tried to click on the test button under "Communication settings" in MT and it says "No response!" which (of course) it doesn´t when I try the same thing on my stationary computer where everything works fine.

I have checked the device manager and it says "unit works" (translated from swedish).

I just bought the laptop, and did so only for my MS-project, so the port has newer worked for me.

I´m ashamed to say it but I don´t know how to rebooting to safe mode. It´s probably easy but I have only used computers as a tool to write and surf until now when it´s seems to be a must to get my MS to work...

just do a google search for your operating system for example: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tuto...utorial61.html

When I set my MS up (3yrs ago?) There was a Bowling & Grippo PC Configurator program, which really wasn't good for much beyond verifying communications: http://www.bgsoflex.com/megasquirtpcdown.html

Might be worth your time to track down an experienced computer nerd in your locale to help out; this stuff can be extremely frustrating even when you DO know what you're doing.

Good luck! Keep at it, it's well worth the headaches in the long run.

Default loop back test

Have you done the loop backtest in the MS Assambly guide?

If not go to:
http://www.megamanual.com/ms2/V3assemble.htm

and see step 26.

If the loopback test does not work I would remove the port and restart and let windows reinstall it.

I had to delete and reinstall it on my old laptop.

The communication speed of the com port needs to match the speed required by MS. There is a reference for it in the MS manual somewhere but I don't have it handy. To check the speed of your comm port, go to control panel/system/device manager and then click on the comm port and go to properties. There should be something in there about the baud rate. It is probably set to 9600, like I said, I don't know what MS needs. I will be trying to hook my MS up this weekend, I hope, so I will know more when I actually do it! Now, I am just totally guessing!

Right-click My Computer, go to Properties, go onto the Hardware tab. Click on "Ports" to expand the list, make sure Serial Port shows "(COM1)" behind it. If it doesn't, right-click it, choose properties, go to the Port Settings tab, click the Advanced button, and choose COM1 from the drop down list (assuming it isn't in use by anything else).
