Default Did I set base timing correctly?

Just installed my MSPNP on my stock 1.8.
I set the base timing... +10 & burn, adjust with light to 10*BTDC by adjusting trigger angle (it's at 59) & burn, reset to -10 & burn.

When I did that the RPM was just around 1000 -1100. Is that ok? I tried lowering it using the adjusting screw on the throttle body (under the rubber cap) but each time I adjusted it the MS seemed to compensate & put it back up.

When I finished, Megatune showed timing of 17*BTDC (with the RPM still about 1000). Shouldn't the timing be at 10*?

That sounds correct.
You were back to running 17* of timing because when you set it back to "-10", you tell it to use your spark map. Take a look at your spark map and at the rpm and kpa you idle at, I bet you will see 17.

As long as the timing was 10* with timing light when you had it set to 10 in MS, then you are good to go.

You did it right. As to the idle speed, mine idles at an indicated 1100-1200 in MS, even though my tach is sitting around 900.. haven't played with the idle screw. Don't know about getting that idle lower.

Wow, my engine likes to idle at 900 with the tach indicating 950.

I set my timing just the way you did it then set my idle. I've set my idle the old way where you insert a wire between ten and gnd and adjust til you see 850 or whatever you want it to be. Idles perfect with the high resolution 10g firmware. Its nice and stable.

Like crash said, when you set it to -10, you are telling it to use the map. Therefore, whichever cell you are in on the spark map is the one that it uses. The idle cell that you are in happens to be 17*. When you put in 10, the mspnp is showing you what it thinks is 10 and therefore, you adjust the timing so that what the MS thinks is 10 is really 10. If you left it at 10, you would have 10* of timing no matter what the MAP or RPM were.

I didn't think the ten & gnd would have any effect once the stock ECU was gone.
Can someone confirm whether I'm supposed to use the ten gnd to set the idle speed or for anything else when the MS is used standalone.

Ten & GND does nothing when running megasquirt for fuel and ignition.

My car is being a bitch and won't stay at 10 degrees. When you change the -10 to just 10 does your car spew black smoke and almost die? Mine does, I've heard that isn't supposed to happen. If I had some damn time I could work on it.

-10 uses your "spark 1 table" so if you're having problems it's likely in your table

Sounds like your timing is so out of adjustment that the car can't handle running at 10*. You should adjust your CAS so that it is in about the middle of it's adjustment and see if you can get it to idle with the fixed angle set to 10*. Then set the trigger angle so it all jives and set it back to -10.

I'm sorry, didn't read your post right. My ten and gnd works since i'm running it parallel with the oem ecu to run AC.
