What parameters do you use for this, and why?

I can see better torque when cold if one uses it like this:

But I think some OEM's retard spark when cold to help Cats heat up faster.

What are your thoughts on this fine point of tuning?

I retarded a couple degrees until 150 or 160F when I thought I was getting detonation on startup. It turned out to be an exhaust leak between the head and the turbo manifold that sounded incredibly suspicious. After I got the leak fixed it did seem to make my turbo happier in the mornings when it was cold outside. I never did a full A to B comparison so I can't say for 100% if it really did anything but I still have it set up that way and it never gives me any trouble.

Sorry to necro the thread, but I'd like to add my 2¢.
I've been messing with cold starts as the days have been getting colder, and I've found that without at least 4° of cold advance at 50-80CLT, my RPMs drop too quickly between shifts for my taste, on the order of -2500 RPMDot or more.
This changes rapidly around 110CLT, and I've found that zero cold advance by 130CLT helps me avoid RPM hang between shifts.

Just thought I'd toss my hat in the ring and see if anyone else has had success with a similar curve to mine. Screenshot of my table attached.

So we don't need to retard a cold engine to prevent detonation?
