Dyno later today - Suggestions!!!???
Heading to a dyno today. Plan on a couple of hours. It's a 1750 mustang load unit. Shop is a Ford shop, but has worked on a number of turbo Miata's in the area. Tuner is running Megasquirt in his turbo'd Mustang.
Suggestions to get prepared for this? My 1st trip to a dyno. I don't know what to expect! Anything I can do to help be prepared to cut down on dyno time is a good thing! |
2 bottles, big ones.
|
Put new plugs in before you go.
|
Just installed new cooler plugs NGK 7's gapped to .25, fresh oil change, fresh oil in diff and tranny.
2 bottles? No NOS for me! Here in the NW we are the world's Microbrew capitol though. Maybe a couple of growlers? except I have to drive home too! I din't know if I should copy some different spark maps from here to try, if they just work with what I have. I don't know what to expect. This seemed like the only shop in my area that had any real Miata or Megasquirt experience. Don't know how good they really are. I just received but haven't installed my Knocksense. Should I bust my butt to get that in? |
Bring plugs with you, make sure that the car is 100%, change the oil before you go, and not long after you get done.

Saml01,
I've always heard 6's or 7's. I was having trouble with popping/hesitating with the 5's and my car is going to see a fair bit of track time this summer. I went with 7's. Still getting some issues with the 7's gapped down. Might be too rich under accel. That's one reason I'm hitting the dyno. |
omg hit it already!
bkr7 for 1.6L bkr6 for 1.8L |
Just got back. I'm a happy boy!
I'll make another post in the prefabbed section with the sheet. Made 240 rwhp and 211 ft/lbs on a Mustang dyno at 10+psi. It's a strong little Miata!!! Didn't really tweak the tuning I already had much. My hesitation/ popping under boost was my fault! The overboost cut out was set too low! |
sweet!!! sounds great!
|
Those are great numbers. Any dyno graphs for us to look at?
|
Dyno chart is posted in the Prefabbed dyno and timeslip section here...

why? Do you change the oil in your car every day?
Obviously, it is less of a problem without a turbo. ;) |

Its just recommend. Dyno tuning a car puts some pretty heavy loads on the engine, and as such creates a lot of heat. Not to mention, if you are running really rich and the fuel leaks past the rings it will eat your bearings for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Obviously, it is less of a problem without a turbo. ;) I drive my turbo car as hard as if it where on a dyno on a day by day basis. And for a longer time under high laod realy. And i still manage bot 1k miles or so on a oil change, with non amsoil synth etc. |

Thats just what I've heard recommended, it wasn't meant to be some sort of dyno gospel. I wouldn't even change it before and after. Bring spark plugs, yes, change oil no. Would I run the average 6k on it? No, of course not, but I try for every 3k for all of my oil changes. You change your oil every 1k miles? |
I'm running full synth. Changed the oil/ filter yesterday before going out. Don't think I'm going to swap out the full synth before it's due.
If it has spent a couple hours making runs and full boost under various loads and speeds to do a lot of fine tuning it might have been another story. As it was the car made 3 baseline passes and maybe another 1/2 hour of messing around trying to get things better. Bottom line was it was running really well when I brought it in and nothing significant was changed. |
Next adventure this week is the late night drags! The following week is my 1st boosted track day. Yee haw.
