Help! Ignition timing on MX5 Turbo, MS2PNP

Fist post on here, and im hopeing you can help.

Just put a TD04 on my MX5, with a Megasquirt PNP ecu. Thought i was headingh in the right direction with tuning, but have some timing issues.

When i set base timing with the strobe, all is good. I the switch to use table and rev the engine. My timing table says 25 degree advance, but my strobe goes to 35.

Fairly sure i`ve put some bad info in somewhere, but need help finding it.

Any ideas ???

Cheers, Jon

What year is the car?
What motor is in the car?
What version is your MS?

PendleMotorcycles 11-30-2015 06:56 AM

The car is a 1.6, 1993. I belive it is MS2 based, pnp by ExtraEFI

this is a really weird trend in last few weeks...

do they just build DIYPNP kits and put their sticker on the case and pretend it's their ECU?

Lol, they put the AIT sensor on the DB15. lol.

PendleMotorcycles 11-30-2015 08:53 AM

Sort of, yes. Although they do state it is a megasquirt 2, built as PNP

Sounds like someone else has had this issue?

I read two other instances of it, but I think the common demoniator is Megasquirt ECUs built by a third-parties.

Otherwise I've never seen the issue in last almost 10 years of supprting MS.

Can you post a screenshot of your ignition settings parameters?

PendleMotorcycles 11-30-2015 09:08 AM

Sorry, noob thing.... Tell me how and i will

Cheers

open TS, open the igntion settings screen.

take a screen shot.

upload it here.

Sorted

im curious---

put the timing latency to 0 and try testing timing advance again. 40 is pretty high for the DIYPNP, might be what's advancing it.

PendleMotorcycles 11-30-2015 10:01 AM

will do Brian. I will let you know shortley

PendleMotorcycles 11-30-2015 10:16 AM

ok, so no real difference. At 2500 rpm, timing light registers 35 degrees, and megasquirt says its 23 degrees.

PendleMotorcycles 11-30-2015 10:23 AM

Just a thought, dangerous i know. When i installed meqasquirt, the instructions said about jumping 2 wires in the diagnostic port to fix timing angle, at set to 10 degrees, which i did. Should had left the jumper in place, as i removed it after doing the timing?

To set base timing basically u change the drop down from
Use table
To fixed.
Set to 10 degrees
Then use timing lite and trigger wizard to make it match up to 10 on crank.

Then turn it back to us table and timing should follow what is said in ignition table.

Jumper in diagnosis is for stock ecu. I don't remember if it perm jumped but how ever it's set does not change when you are setting up timing. The drop down box is how you tell megasquirt to go to fixed timing now.

That jumper (from TEN to GND) is normally used only with the stock ECU. I've never even seen it hooked up with a Megasquirt. While it's possible that the company which built your MS may have connected it and configured it to switch to a fixed ignition timing table, this would be a fairly uncommon / non-standard thing to do.

Normally, we just use the software and toggle the "fixed advance" parameter.

At any rate, even if your particular MS is configured to use this jumper to set a fixed advance table, you definitely would not want to leave the jumper installed after setting up the base timing.

Stock ignition coils and stock sensors, right?

and this is with the timing synced (trigger angle properly tuned)?

ExtraEFI are a bunch of fucking morons.

I hope they see this.

I hope they look in a mirror and see how nasty their teeth are and wish they lived in a country where orthodontics existed.

PendleMotorcycles 11-30-2015 11:15 AM

Whaaa!! Thats strong Brain, lol. Yeh, set timinig with stock ECU, then used trigger wizard to set idle time on megasquirt.
