Default I need help with tuning!!!

Hello Everyone

I have a 1990 turbo miata running with megasquirt, not the PNP

Had nothing but bad luck tuning at shops..

spent 800$+ on tuning already... tuned a few times, and the current tune i have now isnt so good.

We have to past aircare emissions tests here in canada and i failed it. Suposely one of the best megasquirt tuners here recommended by my mechanic, spent 2 hrs to tune my megasquirt to pass aircare. I DID pass aircare, thats great, but it cost me 180$ for the 2 hrs , and after that, my idle rougly 1000rpm, but lkes to drop down to 500rpm and wants to stall if i tap the gas. Is that normal? I dont think so? Because , before this tuner, was another one, and he was able to get my idle rock solid. So this new tuner that did my aircare blamed it on the idle valve? I dont realy think thats the case? Did i get ripped off? Is the price fair? 180$ for 2 hrs tuning my car to passaircare, but it doesnt run as good as before.

its so hard to find a good tuner and i need help bad!!!
ive had nothing but bad luck,,, only want the best for my miata!

thankkkyou

Did you save the map from the other tuner??? Save all your current maps. Now that emissions is over. Look at you previous map that idled great and type in his settings. And save it as a different name. Dont loose the maps you paid for.
You have your map for passing emissions.

OR..........................................

NOW DOWNLOAD YOUR MAP FOR THE MOST HORSEPOWER! If you have to go in for testing per that time of year, change you map to the emissions map. You are in control of this wagon.

If not going for EMISSIONS, use the horspower map.!!!!!!!!!

And a $180 for 2hrs is cheap here. They all want $150 a HR here.

You do have a laptop don't you? If you don't have you map on your computer. Just go to the shop that tuned your car and get your maps from them.
It is simple as opening a attachment on Yahoo email.

They can probably email them to you.

Good Luck!

It isn't hard to mess with yourself. Just never re write over your good maps!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Always save the changes to their own seperate files. That way you don't break down. And you always have a good starting point. and put the dates on them.

So as seasons change, you can resort back to simular climates.

Yep, save the "emissions" map and put it in your archives for later. Flash the older map that idled well. Enjoy.

Also, I've heard that IAT heatsoak can cause the idle to soak.

i have a 1990 miata with:

1993 big nose engine
1999 low mileage transmission
1999 Torsen (limited slip) rear differential and drive shaft
Bell Engineering GT2560 turbo kit with Megasquirt standalone ECU
440cc injectors
tunertoys dual feed fuel rail
flying miata dual turbo exhaust

how much power is safe to make on the stock motor? I think i got like 170whp at 14psi, is there something wrong with the tune? Im asking the tuner who did my aircare to send me the megasquirt files right now thru email. Hopefuly i get them soon and ill let you guys take a loook! I would love to have like 220-230whp is that possible? would it be safe? I need to find tuning help!

thankyou!

Dude buy yourself an LC1 or UEGO wideband, data log, MeagLogViewer. Tune it yourself. No, it won't be load cell dyno tuned, but it sounds like ti would be better than what you've been doing... A HELL of a lot less than 800$!

He forgot to mention, the tuning was done on a Mustang Dyno.

But your right, something is not right, there's no way the hp numbers should be this low at 14 psi.

Juan,he already has a LC1 wideband hooked up.

The problem is,vVind does not know a whole lot about cars,so shops like to take him for a "ride" so to speak.

He can learn!! Doesn't take an engineer to tune a car with megasquirt!

Granted I have a good background in automotive, I knew absolutely nothing about tuning a car when I started this. This forum, google, megamanual, trial and error.. Since I've started I have tuned 3 cars, one N/A, Turbo, And Supercharged. I'd be more than willing to help if he lived closer.

You need to learn to tune. It's not hard. If you have a MS, and a wide band oxygen sensor, and half a brain, you can do it. It will require a lot of reading/research to learn how/what to do. But that's part of it. MS is, for the most part, oriented for the DIY'er. Gotta put in the time to learn how everything works so that you understand what you are doing and can tune it yourself. There's a lot of satisfaction in learning to tune your own stuff. And of course in the end it will be cheaper and better than paying a shop to do it.

In short, 250 dynojet rear wheel HP is nothing on a stock engine. WITH A GOOD TUNE.

Classic example of why you should not buy a used turbo car.

Get one thing straight real fast or you won't be around much longer: We do not help people. We help people help themselves. Nobody on this forum is going to spoon-feed you tuning techniques or theory, because it's all well-documented online.

I'll spoon feed you my BS...... BUT IT IS NOT PROPER.....

Man this thing is so easy. I am good to get on the internet on the computer.
MLV does it just buy clicking, ANALYSE. And somehow I can't get that right.

So I just pulled up the VE table and click and change things as I go. I just type in a higher or lower number till I get the AFR where it supposed to be in that cell.

Once you use it for 10mins you will feel alot better. It is not hard.

My advice. GEt with spike or any radom person that has a Lab top with a 9 pin cable adapter on the back. Download megatune and your maps. Write down the Ve tables. So you can look at them at home side by side.

Have a friend drive and carry you through the table. (different rpms and boost levels)
And where you go lean at cruise, type in higher numbers till your afr's are correct. That is as simple as can be.
Then when you get home compare it to the map that is not lean in that area. but plain and simple just get your afr's where you want them.

I'm sure with dyno time already spent, you will probably do best taking and adding from each map.

If I can do it, anyone can.

You have got your tunes, just work off of both of them to achieve what is needed.

But save the originals in the state they are in. You will always be able to go back to a good platform if something wierd happens.

And as far as things getting a little different with the weather temp changes, it happens. My car is now lean at idle. I had to richen it up.

I figured out why these cars are called tuners, you are always tweaking them somewhat. not alot, but small changes here and there.

Your good, just work it.
-------------------------------------------------------------------

If you can't get a lap top. get a friend to drive and see at what rpm and boost on your gauge the map starts to get lean. Let out of it. (Cruise= vaccum level= KPA) (KPA= any pressure taken away or given to your Barametric pressure.)

Get an extension cord on your desktop. Hook it to your MS in your drive way, and add the cells from the not lean map from that point on. (rpm and boost/vac (KPA level) tell you which cells, at that point change those lean cells to the other values in the not lean map)

Where There is a Will, there is A-WAY!

If you send Brain a cute cat video or picture, he has a color schematic of which cells are cruise, idle, and boost. Or you can look for days on the ms manual. You need something he wants. LOL..... It is just good humor.

Pic's of girlfriend and we all would be more willing to find it for you. LOL

GOOD LUCK!
