The "I passed emissions with MS" thread
1 Attachment(s)
I figured I'd start this one. If anyone else out there has passed emisisons while running a MS, post up your settings,MSQ, and any helpful tips. Other helpful things to include would be your displacement, whether or not you run a cat, injector size, etc.
My setup: Standalone MS1 HR10g Stock 1.6 block/head No Cat DSM 450cc injectors with inline resistors 92 octane MSPNP9093 default timing map at cruise | 17* at idle No visual inspection, idle and 25mph sniff test. My idle and cruise AFRs were basically dead on 14.7:1. I turned off IAT corrections and just let autotune do the damn thing. Also, I kept my idle and speed at the bare minimum. |
what did your timing map look like, and what octane gas? I gotta do mine in Feb.

I'm also mad you passed without a cat, I knew it could be done, but I went ahead and called up Jason @ Enthuzacar and had him whip me up this:

I was using premium which around here is 91 octane.
I selected the entire map under 100 kpa and below 3000rpm and set it to 14.7afr. Then used TS to auto tune for that air fuel ratio. For timing, the first two columns were set to 10*, 2nd two were set to 11*, and the 5th and 6th were set to 12*. My main problem was that for every 5-10 degrees of engine temp, I was gaining 100-200rpm in idle, putting me in a different part of my fuel/timing map. Timing was easy enough to set, but the fueling kept changing. I finally just tuned for low 15's, so if it went low at all it'd still be above 14.7. This was just an idle test. The other 3 times I did the test and failed (crap settings), they had me do a 2500rpm test, but I think that's just to see if your cat is working. The higher EGT's at 2500rpm should produce lower emissions, if they don't then something is wrong. Finally passed with flying colors at 950rpm, 187*, 15.3ish afr. |

I passed NJ emissions in 2009 with a not-so-well tuned MS. It took several tries over two days, but it was a slow time (went on a weekday middle of the day) so i was able to get a couple of 'runs' in each day :)
I actually posted in a different thread (either here or on m.net) and got help from a bunch of knowledgeable guys. If your car is tuned to around 14.7 as you mentioned, i don't see why it would be a problem. If it helps, I ran megatune and did a log (hid my netbook behind pass. seat) while they did the test.. It seemed to be around 2500-3000 rpm at 50-75kpa, which helped me identify the cells i needed to tune. FWIW i also got shit for having an aftermarket horn so i had to put back the stocker to pass. -Tomaj |
Emmisions passed with flying colors, 1000rpm idle and 2000rpm standing. The gases tested were HC, NOx and O2. 14.7 afr everywhere, flat VE at 1000rpm and not-so-flat at 2000rpm. EGO correction enabled everywhere with 15% authority and 1% steps. Timing 10* at 1000rpm, 18* at 2000rpm.

I like this thread.
I passed the loaded low speed and high speed on the dyno. I didn't mess with timing to get it to pass. The guy was cool enough that he let me hook up the laptop and tune it while it he was actually running the test. Last time I failed for high NOx. Make sure you don't go too lean. Dialed the AFR down to 14.7 from 15, and passed with flying colors. With Cat. HR10g RX-7 440cc injectors |
Paul created a good Map for the MS to help us get thru inspection here in Jersey. Basically he turned the timing down. Nothing too advanced. I'll see if he can post the msq's later on today. He's out doing some jobs in NYC today i think.
|
I'm going to try on my current map when I test, no going to do anything special; just waiting for a weekend with clear weather.
|
I passed by removing the MS, replacing stock sensors/ecu and leaving the wastegate open.....stupid obd2 test :vash:
|
No issues passing. Passed well below limits. I'll have a scan soon. I did nothing special with my msq in order to pass.
|
|
Ah, looking at your scan, I realize why I'm lucky. No visual for a cat/PCV/Evap :).

The car passed the test today and it was the first shot I've had with the '01 engine in place and the VVT active.
It has passed on the first try with the MS installed the last 3 years...2 with a '99 motor and leaky #4 rings and the first with the original 1.6, granted, the tunes were different for each. This round, I ran open loop without the O2 sensor connected and a significantly smaller cat. I'm currently running the MS1 processor with the V3.0 board and obviously N/A. Got a touch close on the hydrocarbons on the first test... |
yeah, very close, probably a touch too rich.

Wait, don't they plug into the diagnostic connector to check your base timing (which won't work with MegaSquirt right?). Also are you guys faking the check-engine light (turning it on initially with a timer or something)? (I'm in CA)
|
I'm in Seattle, so we only have a sniffer, no visual, even for CELs. Also, I think most of us are pre OBD2. If you are in CA you might be SOL :/.
