One of the things on my to-do list is to convert to a full-return system (hoping that will help with this, among other things).

yeah, that spot sucks.

highly recommend putting the AIT outside the engine bay, just after the IC.

you'll need to tune your MAT corrections table to fight the heatsoak (especially if the default curve is still there -- it leans out fuel like crazy if the AIT is over 90°F).

For boosted apps, placing the brass open element GM IAT sensor close to the IC output and out of the hot engine bay is the best location. However, for NA applications switching to the all plastic bodied GM IAT sensor is effective in eliminating IAT sensor heat soak as a problem.

After changing to the all plastic sensor, my IAT's are much more responsive with my currently non-boosted 1.8L. I have the all plastic GM sensor in the end of a cone, open air filter. The filter is close to the passenger side firewall, with some small hood louvers fitted to reduce under hood temps. My MS3X shows IAT's moving pretty quickly based on whether the car is moving or not, amount of time idling, etc.

The closed element, all brass GM IAT recommended by some MS guides on the other hand did heat soak and as a result the IAT temp readings responded much more slowly. I imagine the open element, brass GM sensor is somewhere where between it and the plastic bodied sensor. Too bad the plastic bodied sensor isn't threaded!
