megasquirt prob plz help

i have installed megasquirt today into my 1992 eunos roadster normally aspirated 1.6

its wired in for fuel and spark using gm coolant and ait sensors.
i have uploaded the newest firmware to it 029v i think it is.
in the config everything is set to what it should be (ms&se)
all the settings on there i have copied from aussie driver

when ign is on i can hear the fuel pump whining away but megatune displays the fuel pump as off and the readings on the 8 gauges come to life, also the 2 outer led's on the ms box light up.
i am slightly worried by the coolant temp reading as it is saying -2degs, and the ait is saying 11 degs. (i had the wrong wheel decoder settings in when i was 1st trying to start it and both sensors were reading 6 degrees which is about right for today. deffo not -2)
when i turn the key to start cranking the temp readings jump around along with map and inj pulse width etc.
when cranking the 2 outer led's flash one after the other.
i have had my plugs out and they smell of fuel but still it will not start.
i canot check the spark at the plug as i am on my own and need someone to hold the plug so i am going off the ecu to tell me if they are firing.

can anyone tell me if i am using the correct settings or if i need to change my required fuel constants for 1.6 specific ones.
please help asap as i am beginning to lose the light.

idont think i can help you if you don't post your msq. i dont know why temp readongs would jump around bad connections?

none of the LEDs should work after you hook up spark control are you sure you hooked your spark control up correctly?

stevenford_uk 02-18-2007 12:57 PM

everything is deffo hooked up corrctly and there are no bad connections, i have been through it all with a fine tooth comb.
the battery is flat now tho, i am getting some jump leads now and goin check spark with mate in a bit, i have loaded a known good msw up to it and its the same with that so i think the msq is ok, just se what its like with the jump leads.
i am correct in thinking my req fuel settings should be 13.3 for the stock 1.6 injectors aint i.
i have tried searching all the forums but come up with no useful info for it.
cheers

I don't suppose the stock ecu is around so that you could focus on fueling first? It sounds like something is severly jacked in the wiring department. Do you have a stimulator that you can verify the MS operation?

stevenford_uk 02-18-2007 01:28 PM

i had the ecu ready built and he tested it so i know the ecu is working.
the stock ecu is still there to control air con etc. but i have changed the coolant sensor for the gm one and also the ait for the gm one so the std ecu wont work now for fuelling or spark will it?

Al Hounos 02-18-2007 01:34 PM

unless you clipped the wires to the stock ecu from the stock sensors they should still work. i think you need to get the guy that did the work for you to check it out. this is the problem with not doing the mods yourself. 'if you want something done right....'
i would hook the stock ecu back up completely and run the car with the MS only monitoring inputs to make sure they all work and the car's hardware works as well. you have to do MS in steps or you'll get in over your head.

post pics of your board mods and your msq and a wiring diagram if you cant talk to the guy who is helping you.

my stock sensors are no longer there, i cut the wires from the stock ecu harness and my new coolant temp sensor is fitted anto a drilled and tapped std housing so i cannot refit the std sensor.
will the std ecu still do the ign if i reconnect it now?

Al Hounos 02-18-2007 03:04 PM

yeah, itll still run, but in some kind of limp mode.

That kinda sucks. I don't know if the stock ecu takes clt temp into consideration for timing. As long as it has the AFM hooked up, I would think it could do timing enough for you to do some problem solving. I would not drive it like that though.

A pic of your board and your MSQ would go a long way right now.

Emphasis added for others reading along.

*UPDATE* its 2:10 am worked straight through from earlier!!!!
i have now re-installed the std sensors and ecu, it started up 1st turn of the key.
so i then piggy backed some of the sensors to make sure everything was reading right, i took lambda, coolant temp and air intake at 1st, they all read fine, so i then added the injector banks (just spliced into the wires to see if it would read) the car started and got readings, but duty cycle and pulse width seemed extremely low, and the car would not rev cleanly with both ecu's connected to the injectors. so i then disconnected the injectors from the std ecu and ran them through megasquirt.
it spins over and fires but will not start, it seems to be firing every other cycle as if 1 of the injector banks is not squirting. could this be the case or is it the after start enrichment or cranking enrichment?
i will try to get a msq up tomorrow, i cant get piccys of the board cos its all put together now and i think its all ok in there.

stevenford_uk 02-19-2007 10:16 AM

i did what everyone said to do and pulled it all to bits.
i have got the v3 board sitting in front of me on my desk without the required board mods done!
as far as i can see with my limited knowledge of the build the resisters etc needed to get it working with the cas and the std igniters have not been done!
that would explain why i had no spark as i have been using the wrong pinouts because of this and my fuelling will be completely wrong due to the cas not being recognised.
i have some pictures of the board here too.
sorry if they are too big i do not know how to resize them.

if anyone has any pictures of their board with some simple instructions and parts list that would be awesome.
thanks

i can tell that it's not setup like we do. for on ethnig it is using its own ignitors, vb921. look over the stickies on this forum there's pictures there. i don't know how to troubleshoot someone elses work.

stevenford_uk 02-19-2007 11:02 AM

sorry bud, are you saying its setup for the use of the vb921 as the igniter?
thanks
steve

look at kag's baords to get a better idea i dont think yours was wired the same but i am new to MS

mazdasly75 02-19-2007 12:10 PM

Your MS has 2 VB921....definatly. Those are made to fire the coil directly, without igniter.

That's what it looks like on your board. Most miata folks use the stock ignitor.

Warm up that soldering iron, you've got some work ahead of you!

magnamx-5 02-19-2007 12:28 PM

or he could run the 1.8 coils right?

stevenford_uk 02-19-2007 12:30 PM

can i not use the vb921's instead of the stock igniters?
also does anyone know where i can find a assembly guide for the ms1 v3 ign setup, i have been following the assembly guide off msefi but its telling me to look on msnse site for it, but i dont really know what i am looking for on there.

magnamx-5 02-19-2007 12:38 PM

look at the link i put up ealier kags got his done and it works go from there.
