MS3 knock module updates

I'm interested in the knock module over on MSextra.com and am wondering if anyone here has updates on how it's working? I that there were a few people from here messing with it.

Matt Cramer 05-16-2012 10:08 AM

We are getting ready to send them out for production, so expect them to hit the shelves in maybe 2 months tops.

miatauser884 05-16-2012 10:44 AM

Nice! I'm so excited. Is the kit going to include the knock sensor as well? If not, what type should we be looking into? How effective has it been for helping tune spark? Is diy going to provide any support for initial settings, knock window, etc.

y8s 05-16-2012 12:13 PM

I've been using it but not really doing much other than playing with injector trims.

you can use a stock miata knock sensor.

Nice, finally. James did never answer the question about the new batch of knockboards at msextra, though the question came up a couple of times.

We'd been working with him behind the scenes to arrange a production run.

The 1.1 firmware base map will include default settings, but nothing model specific.

Alright y8s, start getting a tutorial together.

y8s 05-18-2012 10:29 AM

there's really not much to tutor.

install it, wire up the sensor, and with the default settings, you'll see noise on it immediately.

then you pick how aggressive you want retard to occur.

hustler 05-18-2012 11:31 AM

I think its important that the MS braintrust understand how much troglodytes like myself appreaciate your work. I and my other troglodytic friends are going to use this knock-technology to troll any and everyone with AEM. Right now, I can't troll them and that hurts my soul. Your solution will make me whole again.

stefanst 06-20-2012 09:30 PM

I just read on the MSEXTRA forum that new arrival is August. I wish I could pre-order!

Zaphod 06-21-2012 03:24 AM

When I asked over there I had the hope that the answer would be like end of June or something like that... I am so waiting for that board...

Matt Cramer 06-21-2012 12:16 PM

We hope to have ordered enough that they won't sell out, so we are not doing pre orders.

soviet 07-02-2012 05:05 PM

Any update on this? I need it. Please take my money!

Matt Cramer 07-03-2012 08:53 AM

Nothing to report right now - just waiting on some of the parts to arrive.

3rdCarMX5 08-03-2012 07:03 PM

I want to throw my money at this product, and it is August. Any updates?

Ben 08-03-2012 07:34 PM

We have 100 boards that we anticipate being ready for sale next week. We had to order special header pins for them that should be coming in any day, and I need to finish testing on them, as I need to make sure that the final production version works as well as our prototypes did. Testing is on me, and it means causing a car to det on the dyno. I'm juggling this with 4 or 5 other projects, but will get to it next week.

I anticipate the Real Time Clock to be ready for sale next week as well.

miatauser884 08-03-2012 08:08 PM

Can we get on a list to get one

soviet 08-04-2012 01:24 AM

Yeah I really want one and don't want to miss out due to demand.

hustler 08-04-2012 02:10 AM

Good work.

y8s 08-04-2012 09:20 AM

this is great. it'll be nice to see more than just a small handful of real world results and settings values.

shuiend 08-04-2012 09:29 AM

I am going to buy them all so that I can hook up 100 knock sensors to my engine.

Ben 08-04-2012 09:53 AM

You'll only need 50 boards for 100 knock sensors. ;)

Ben, are you guys going to have any suggested starting points with setting like a diy basemap? I ask because I have no clue how to tune this item and i don't want to blow up my ---- in the process.

If you are running the NB knock sensor I will see if I can get y8s to post his settings screen for the knock sensor. He has been successfully running his for a few months.

miatauser884 08-05-2012 12:19 PM

Do u have a part number or link to nb sensor? Is this going to be sold with the board as an option?

shuiend 08-06-2012 08:55 AM

I do not have a part number. I simply sent Steve at Panic Motorsports and email telling him I needed one and he gave me a price and then shipped it out. It is a stock NB part so I assume you could go to the dealership for one. I highly doubt DIY starts selling the NB knock sensors.

Braineack 08-06-2012 09:05 AM

I might just buy this knock sensor module, just so i can feel cool.

But it must be pretty cool to be you
With your brothers at your back protecting you
It must be pretty cool to know you belong
Isolated my whole life
Counting scars in the land of the smiling knives
Yes, I’m envious, it’s true
But it must be cool to be you

Braineack 08-06-2012 09:22 AM

well I might just waste of my money on shitty drugs instead.

stefanst 08-06-2012 10:21 AM

I'm just finalizing my harness for the MS3/X.
To what pin and on which one of the two DB37s should I connect the stock '99 knock sensor, so it will work with this wonderful new piece of magic?

Braineack 08-06-2012 11:12 AM

you'll wanna bring the stock NB (2F) into one of the four spare inputs, then you'll connect that to K1 on the module. The other senor pin should be grounded already, but i can comfirm this later.

just remember, you cant use the three LED circuits or IGN on the mainboard with the module in place.

Why would I do that if I have MS3X :-)

Braineack 08-06-2012 11:40 AM

you upgraded from ms2 like I did and kept the fan control on the middle led?

ThunderFox 08-06-2012 02:47 PM

Hah, I've been meaning to ask a question about these MSExtra Knock modules. Will they work in conjunction with an MS1? I've been meaning to get one for a while :P

no way in hell, they solder into ms3 board
Megasquirt-3 MS3 - experimental knock module

ThunderFox 08-06-2012 02:54 PM

Oh wait... My bad. I was actually referring to these:

ExtraEFI.co.uk HOME
(look for Knock Conditioner Units)

Braineack 08-06-2012 02:56 PM

Please leave this discussion for the MS3 knock module and not primative ms1 "technology"

Ben 08-07-2012 05:16 PM

RTC testing is complete. We're getting them packaged up, and should be on the site by the end of the week, possibly early next week latest.

Knock module testing is also complete. Same story, we need to get them packaged up. These will also be listed on the site very soon, though next week is more likely than this week.

We will have plenty of both items ready to go for the initial launch.

I will be excited when I see them for sale online. I have my CC ready to order the RTC, knock module, and mapdaddy.

Impressive work!

What purpose does the real time clock serve though?

shuiend 08-14-2012 08:57 PM

I have a stop on Friday at the airport in ATL. I am tempted to tell my boss that I am going to rent a car and drive home. This way I can stop by and pick up everything I want to buy.

It is so that when you use on board sdcard data logging you can tell when your logs are from.

ThunderFox 08-14-2012 09:03 PM

And that's it? Wow, doesn't seem at all worth the trouble of adding it to the MS3X, should come by default with it I guess.

What are you using for an RTC?

shuiend 08-14-2012 09:06 PM

I will be using it so when I leave my sdcard in my MS3x for a month and then want to go back and look at a log file from a specific day or time I can.

ThunderFox 08-14-2012 09:10 PM

No, I meant, what is the IC you're using for the RTC implementation... Just being curious, I could use one for something else.

The idea of timestamping the logs is quite clever, I could surely use that feature, it just feels like something the MS3 should have had all along, that's all.

Ben 08-16-2012 11:44 AM

Knock Module and RTC are both now officially for sale.

I just went and looked for them again on your site. I found them and was about to post links to find you beat me by a few minutes. I will be placing an order very soon.

stefanst 08-16-2012 11:59 AM

Order Placed :-)

shuiend 08-16-2012 12:02 PM

I also just ordered the knock module and map daddy. The RTC will have to wait a bit for me to have some more cash money.

ianferrell 08-16-2012 12:06 PM

not to be a cheap-ass, but I thought it was gonna be closer to $50 than $100, sad panda. (ok, so I'm actually a cheap ass, lol)

I was thinking the same thing personally, but detecting knock is worth the cost at the end of the day.

ianferrell 08-16-2012 12:09 PM

Yeah well... If we didn't have e85-a-plenty here I'd probably have already entered my CC details, but as is its almost more of a curiosity at this point.

soviet 08-16-2012 01:11 PM

yeah I was going to get both but only could justify knock board for now.

w/e this is still super-mega-awesome-baller.

miatauser884 08-16-2012 03:00 PM

How about a group buy for the cheap asses like myself.

I was going to get the RTC, but like others, I expected the price to be about ~ $100 for both products.

Other than time stamping datalogs? Does this open up potential for advanced autotuning features?

shuiend 08-16-2012 04:13 PM

My knock module is on its way to me. Hells yeah.

3rdCarMX5 08-16-2012 05:37 PM

Boom, money hopefully well spent.

shuiend 08-18-2012 12:24 PM

I just got in my knock module. I should be installing it sometime later this afternoon or tomorrow. Then I just need an engine to test it on.
