No CAS input (no spark etc)

Hi everybody,

I was wondering if I could get some assistance with a issue I am having with my Megasquirt 2.

I recently got it upgraded from a MS1 to MS2 with a few extras like sequential fueling, launch control, boost control, switchable maps and light output.

I have just fitted it and with the test mode found I can get spark and I can get the injectors to fire plus the fuel pump works good as well.

The ECU knows when its cranking however I am getting no spark when cranking, I have taken a log and found my RPM goes from 0 - 200 (approx) while cranking.

From my research this indicates a CAS error and I do have a sync count and sync error.

I have 19 sync errors in the log below with the error reason being 39 which I have found is 4G63 - pattern does not match.

Below I have also included a composite log and a tooth log which I recorded on three different cranking attemps.

I also have it set to falling edge which I am pretty sure is correct and even if it was wrong I should still get spark so I really dont have a idea what the problem could be. Any help would be greatly appriciated.

- Sam

let me look at home, you probably just need to change the cam polarity.

Thanks brain, I have just changed the trigger settings to rising edge and got more logs just to see if that sorted the pattern which it didn't as it still don't start but it was worth a try.

what firmware are you using?

iirc the newest lets to pick the polarity of the cam.

I think it was like V3.3.3 dated like 2014 does that help?

So your confident from that composite log its just backwards then essentially?

I just created a TS project using the latest 3.4 firmware and looked at the trigger settings and found the "Flip polarity of cam" setting.

Before I upgrade can you confirm that this should fix it I dont wanna take a risk of messing anything up thats all.

very big thank you for your help so far though.

you logs dont work when i try to open them.

you need to crank for like 20-30sec.

Seems like awful long time, plus I think ill end up making the battery go dead, I can show a screen shot of the patterns both falling and rising edge.

How do you have the RPM input circuits built?

Braineack 08-21-2015 08:36 AM

im going to assume he has regular MS1 mods.

so crank going through the opto, and cam going directly into js10 with a pullup.

I don't know since I didn't build the ECU my self I sent my MS1 which was built by a unknown to Phil at ExtraEFI.co.uk

He upgraded it to a MS2 with a MS2X card since I got sequentially fueling, launch, boost, switchable maps and a programmable output added all on the 15 pin options plug.

He also said he fixed a few things as well as it didn't look that great inside, I am going to go quickly upgrade my firmware to 3.4.4 so I have the flip polarity setting and take another log with it inverted.

Hopefully thats all I need to start it since it is getting a signal its just not correct.

Phil built it for a MK1 MX5 1990 since thats what I have, So I would imagine he done it correctly.

So I have upgraded to v3.4 restored my tune and inverted the polairty but it still wont start.

This is my pattern with the polarity inverted as you can see its still not right. (log attached)

I got my friend Alex to take a log of his signal pattern and I am guessing this is what mine needs to look like.

I also attached my current tune just incase it makes a differents, its not set for my injector size yet but that does not matter I'm guessing for the meanwhile til I actually get it trying to start.

xXxKillDogxXx 08-21-2015 01:06 PM

Anybody have a idea what might be causing this? I'm really stuck now after the cam polarity not fixing it I just don't know what to try or where to start...

Braineack 08-21-2015 02:44 PM

there's a change between ms1 and ms2 between the polarity requirements of the signals. I assumed the latest firmware made it so it didnt matter and you could change the cam polarity in relation to the crank in software. I really have only just seen the option and havent read on it.

otherwise when I was upgrading ms1 to ms2 in the past I was making modifications to the mods on the board itself. i was trying to prevent you from having to solder if it wasnt necessary.

What would I need to look for to know if I have the correct changes?

I have emailed Phil with the same information and hopefully he can confirm exactly what has happened.

Braineack 08-21-2015 02:54 PM

what does your log look like with the cam polarity set to normal?

xXxKillDogxXx 08-21-2015 02:57 PM

Let me go get a quick log as I think I only took a log earlier of it inverted

The netbook needs to charge quickly but before I go down the ignition input capture should be Falling edge correct? because on my MS1 map its Rising edge.

Okay I got 4 logs all with different settings.

Attached is 1 log with the settings Falling edge with polarity normal
Another is Rising edge with polarity normal
third is Falling edge with polarity inverted
and lastly Rising edge with polarity inverted

Once again thank you for helping me try to figuire this out.

Just incase your at work etc and havnt got Megalog viewer to hand here are some pictures:
