Ok, I'm stuck.

HI, I'm new here on this forum.

I have a '91 1.6L miata, sr20 t25 turbo, and 430cc black top Supra injs, and a MS v3 main board soon to be installed.

I intend to install my MS in parallel along with my stock ecu. I also have no idea where the stock ecu is located lol. It's not where I thought it would be.

Right now I'm having software issues with my MS. I cannot find the EasyTherm to download metioned in this thread: https://www.miataturbo.net/forum/t13676/
Using the following link: http://www.megamanual.com/files/soft...ll_Install.zip
It only shows a MS logo.

I also tried to open MegaTune and it says-

"The selected communication port (COM1) could not be opened.

To fix this click communications->Settings and change port, then click File->Offline to connect to your ECU."

It does this no matter what COM port I use or what USB port I use my MegaSquirt ECU will not connect to my laptop.

KPLAFIN 10-18-2009 05:25 PM

Under passenger's floorboard. As far as everything else goes I'm a MS retard (never used it) so I'm of no help there.

Matt Cramer 10-19-2009 11:54 AM

Are you using a built in serial port or a USB adapter?

Cookie Monster 10-19-2009 06:30 PM

USB adapter

Gryff 10-19-2009 06:51 PM

A lot of people have had that problem. What you need to do is make sure that:
1) your driver software for the usb is installed
2) your com for the usb and for megasquirt are the same com (typically between one and four is what you want)
3) make sure that megasquirt is connected to your car and the car is on ACC

albumleaf 10-19-2009 07:42 PM

ALso if you got a $3 egay usb>serial just call it quits now and buy a good one.

WonTon 10-19-2009 08:26 PM

buy the one from DIYautotune! (usb thingy)

nicacus 10-19-2009 08:59 PM

Newegg.com has the same USB to serial converter for less.. plus free shipping.

works perfect for me

nicacus 10-19-2009 09:01 PM

Newegg.com - CABLES UNLIMITED USB-2920 USB 2.0 to Serial DB9 Adapter - Adapters & Gender Changers

WonTon 10-19-2009 09:06 PM

that works too! :D

the only prob i had with mine, and it took me about an hour to figure out! the laptop i was using didnt have the supporting software for the usb adapter! i felt like an idiot after i finally figured it out!

1. Where can I find the driver for this? I've downloaded so much crap for this thing that I probably missed it.
3.Do I realy have to have the ECU in the car to do this? It's a PITA to have an ECU in the car if it's not working.

Also I bought everything including my USB adapter from DIYautotune.com so this thing should work.

WonTon 10-19-2009 09:20 PM

find out the specific usb adapter you have! go to google type in blah blah blah driver software and bam!

Cookie Monster 10-19-2009 10:24 PM

Cables Unlimited
USB 2.0 toRS232 serial adapter

I found the driver cd in the box my MS came in! I had no idea that a silly cable would need a driver! :) So now the (com1) glitch has been solved.

Now I need to get the Easy Therm. Where can I get that?

I also need to somehow test the ecu.

This thread has been helpfull so far, thanks!

WonTon 10-19-2009 10:25 PM

WTF! mine didnt come with that!

Matt Cramer 10-20-2009 09:54 AM

If you're having trouble finding the driver for the Cables Unlimited adapter, download it here:

http://www.diyautotune.com/downloads...%202.02.04.exe

Cookie Monster 10-20-2009 10:41 PM

Ok guys or ladies. So what exactly does this Easy Therm do and where can I get it if I need it?

nicacus 10-20-2009 10:58 PM

Wiring and Sensors

evank 10-20-2009 11:15 PM

I use an ebay PCMCIA-to-DB9 adapter card. That way I don't have to worry about a USB cable shaking loose. The card sits quite solidly in my laptop. It works fine.

Is this where you get the driver for the DIY Doggle ?

Matt Cramer 10-23-2009 10:27 AM

Yes.

Cookie Monster 10-24-2009 02:59 PM

Now I have more problems! I connot open easytherm to change the 'code version' it just opens up to view more files.

Now that I have extracted the hr_10g file to megatune I get this when I try to open it.

'Controller code version does not match signature MSnS-extra.ini
(See audit.log for where the above file was found)

Expected "MSnS-extra format 029q********" (found in ini file)

Recieved "0x53" (from controller)

Table corruption may occur, this is usually a very serious problem.

Teminate Megatune now?

'Yes' 'No'

tyson87 10-24-2009 03:06 PM

i got that same error, i had to flash it the other way using DOS/CMD

gospeed81 10-24-2009 03:07 PM

+1...the one time I got that error was when I failed at a reflash...and did it over again.

poobs 10-24-2009 03:11 PM

I have working on mine since yesterday Found the DIY doggle was toast so had to buy a $40.00 Rat Schack cable. Now Megatune locks up randomly. I have reinstalled it 3 times and it still locks up...

tyson87 10-24-2009 03:15 PM

MT locks/freezes for me if i pull the cable out b4 shutting down the software.

maybe you have a problem with the usb/serial port on the PC?

Cookie Monster 10-24-2009 03:51 PM

Fixed the megatune opening problem by plugging in the ECU.

Can some one tell me how to open Eastherm? I have it in My Documents. I'm trying to continue with Brains DIY MS how to Software>Step2. It says:

Step 2:
1.Create your Firmware file (only necessary if you're running parallel).
2.Open EasyTherm
3.Change the 'Code Version' (towards the bottom on the RHS of the screen) to "Custom"
4.Change the port to your port (COM 1 or what-ever it is) on the bottom of the screen
5.Change the 'Coolant and Air Temp' settings to your desired settings;

But when I try to open it it just shows me all the little files and programs.

LOL. If I had money to give you I probably would! :)

Well if it wasn't for this forum I would have sent back this MS many moons ago with a very nice note to go with it.

Guess what! That's right... moooorrreee problems!

I have the megasquirt ecu hardwired into the stock wiring harness and now the easytherm says this when I try to upload to MS:

'Communications error- check com port number.'

Well I changed all four com ports and it didn't do anything.

Also since I do not have a stim, I do not need to use a jumper wire right?

Should the LEDs on the MS ecu come on when the ignition switch is on? They are not turning on.

I'm currently following these intructions below.

Once you have changed the settings, click on the "Write .inc and .s19 Files" button on the bottom of the EasyTherm screen
The file that you want to write to is the 'msns-extra.s19' file in the C:\EFI\ folder in the hr_10g file that you unzipped to earlier.
Let’s flash that file

IF YOU ARENT USING A STIM, UNPLUG YOUR COILS/IGNITORS!

Put a jumper on the boot pin on the MS motherboard and power up the Stim/ Ignition to ON.
Click "upload to MS" Choose the 'msns-extra_mod.s19' file in C:\EFI\ (Don't touch a thing on your computer after this or it will freeze)
It will write about 1775 lines, if it doesn’t do it again from step 2.
Unpower the MS and remove the boot jumper.
Copy the three .inc files from C:\Program Files\Easytherm into your Project Folder’s “MTCFG” folder, click yes to overwrite if prompted.
Open the Megatune Software
go to file > Configurator
under MegaTune2.25, highlight msns-extra.ini.hr10, then go to file activate.
Then File > Save.

Cookie Monster 10-24-2009 11:52 PM

Ok, well I was able to get my com port changed once again in a different place. So now when I try to upload to MS from easytherm I get this:

'Connection Failed!

Check serial cable, port number, and jumper on boot resister.

Remember, MS must be powered up with boot resister shorted prior to downloading, reboot MS and try again'

So wtf is going on here? I know my comport is right, I know my cable is good. I don't think I need to jump anything because I'm not using a stim. The two LEDs closest to the DB9 connector light briefly when I turn the ignition to 'on'.

tyson87 10-25-2009 12:01 AM

do this.

with the ms on and pluged in to ur PC.

start >> (right click) my computer>> properties >> hardware >> device manager.

look under com/port/LTI (or something like that)
what port is the MS on?

after you know what port its on make sure Megatune is set to that port.
make sure you have that same port selected in Easytherm.

(in my case easytherm only had 1-4 as available comports and my port was 7. i had to change the name to com 1. i can explain how to do this if it comes down to it.)

Cookie Monster 10-25-2009 12:23 AM

Actually I already did that. Megatune, easytherm (aka pitatherm), and my serial cable are all set to com3.

So it looks like I would need to jump a wire from some boot to somewhere else??? That's the only thing I can think of that I haven't done but I don't know where to jump from or to. I wouldn't think that I wouldn't need to do that since I only have a v3 main board and that's all, no msII, no stim, just a v3 main board.

tyson87 10-25-2009 12:37 AM

open the MS case.

look for the proto area (its a lot of holes in like a 10 x 15 arrangement) on the top of that u should see hte boot holes, short the 2 out.

Troubleshooting Communications I

Cookie Monster 10-25-2009 01:14 AM

Now with the jumper wire in, easytherm is going back to the comport check error.

I will try to figure this out in the morning.

Cookie Monster 10-25-2009 12:58 PM

Everything is set to com3 the boot jumper is in, the MS is powered up I guess, and hyperterminal says it can't open com3. It won't let me type anything in.

Cookie Monster 10-25-2009 03:59 PM

I just went through everything and found that my MS didn't like the wire I was using as a jumper for the boot loader. So I have the easytherm and hyperterminal working. and uploaded to MS ecu.

So now that that's done I'm trying to edit the custom.ini in MEGAtune mtCfg. It will not not me edit anything! so now what?

poobs 10-25-2009 04:09 PM

Good for you CM !!! You know what they say -"He who perseveres gets to uncover yet even more problems"

I bought the assembled variety of Megasquirt and I'm still having problems like Megatune randomly locking up on me.

Best of luck :bigtu:

Matt Cramer 10-26-2009 11:17 AM

Try ditching EasyTherm and using the MSPNP tuning package. Then flash it with the firmware for a '96-'97 Miata (with or without MAF as appropriate). That's a Hi Res code that's already set up for Miata sensors. If you get an error message, please post it here.

Cookie Monster 11-29-2009 05:15 PM

Can someone give me or tell me where I can download a base tune. I've seen some MSQ's I don't now what that stands for, I assume they are base tunes. But they are completely different from what I need. I also do not know how to apply them anyways.
:(

I need this car running right! It's my only car and I need it for work. Now I'm wishing I had just bought a rising rate FPR instead of a stupid MS. What's worse is no shop in town will touch it because they're all afraid to work on it because it has a MS in it. :(

poobs 11-29-2009 05:33 PM

Go file open, select an MSQ and it will ask you if you want to burn it to the ECU or not.Click yes

You will love the Megasquirt once you get over this hump. You just got off to a lumpy start.

Cookie Monster 11-29-2009 05:53 PM

I think you mean in MegaTune?

file/MSQ info/ window pops up 1-7 maps/close is the only option.

Cookie Monster 12-05-2009 03:53 PM

There are no msq's there to be selected it looks empty. :( Now what?

Cookie Monster 12-05-2009 04:59 PM

Any of the options to burn to the MS have a bunch of warnings and will not burn to the MS.

poobs 12-05-2009 06:06 PM

Your motor runs - right ? So there has to be an MSQ somewhere !!!

I don't understand what is going on with your stuff... could they be saved in another folder ?

poobs 12-05-2009 06:08 PM

Ok, this leads me to think that you don't have an MSQ or file to load.
Did you try the DIY web site ?
Did your MS come with a CD ?

No not running on the MS yet the MS is only wired to power untill I can get over the software BS. I need to drive this car everyday so I can't afford to have this MS BS breaking down on me.

I didn't see any downloads for a MSQ or basemap on their site.

No my MS did not come with a CD.

poobs 12-05-2009 09:23 PM

Do a search in this forum for MSQ. If you find one you need to make sure it is compatible with your ECU etc.

Cookie Monster 12-06-2009 12:36 AM

I found a couple. But it will not burn them. It says there are 12 or 7 warnings written into the audit file log. Whatever that is..... Then if I try to burn them it says cannot connect to controller. :(

poobs 12-06-2009 11:07 AM

You need to call or email DIY or find a local buddy Megasquirt expert. I've no clue what is going on with your stuff :vash:

Cookie Monster 12-06-2009 11:48 AM

Everyone has it all wrong. MS stands for MEGASHIT!

I already emailed DIYautotune..... No reply yet but it's not monday yet either. I should've bought an AEM EMS or something.

Braineack 12-06-2009 11:53 AM

or Must not be Stupid to use it?

I think your very first and foremost issue is simply trying to figure out what com port your tuning cable resides on.

Errors when loading a MSQ file doesnt mean much, it could mean that your configurator is setup for kPa and the map is set for PSI, or another WB, or simple setting changes.

You need to start over from the beginning, your earlier post #21 suggests you have no firmware loaded.

And you'll never be able to load/connect if you cant figure out what com port you are using.

You also didn't get HR_10g loaded.

your next plan of action needs to be right clicking on My Computer, selecting Manage, selecting device manager, open the com ports section, and see what com port your cable is on. then post that here. If you cannot do that, you'll never get it. if you downloaded the mspnp installer, you can even go to Programs, Megasquirt, Port Checker, and see what ports it says are in use.

1. Comport 3, everything is set for comport 3 no problems there anymore.

2. Firmware is loaded.

3. HR_10g is loaded.

"Errors when loading a MSQ file doesnt mean much, it could mean that your configurator is setup for kPa and the map is set for PSI, or another WB, or simple setting changes."

Everything looks Ok but I don't know what else I should be looking for.

If it says it has 14 warnings I close that little window then it will popup 14 more times untill it finally goes away. But it never says what's wrong.

curly 12-06-2009 01:16 PM

Are you sure you're connected? That sounds like the what happens when I try to burn an MSQ from my desktop to my car and MS that's out in the driveway. It doesn't say "page 1-13 could not connect to controller"?

poobs 12-06-2009 01:56 PM

Have patience. You'll get there.
Don't be shy about calling DIY they have great customer support.

if you have specifc questions email it to them.

Wouldn't it be easier and much more reliable to use a Apexi SAFC neo? I could just use an extra MAF from my nissan or pull a map sensor off a honda to use with it. Everyone in Phoenix can tune with those things. I'm now considering selling this Megasquirt btw.

WestfieldMX5 12-06-2009 02:50 PM

yes it would.

It may be easier for you just because you are having trouble if you don't factor in the additional cost.

Did you contact DIY Auto tune for help with your issues or are you just relying on this forum?

I've been using this forum for almost all of the megasquirt info. It is the only place I have found that I can find out how to set it up for my car.

I will find out what they say tomorrow I hope.
