Ran VEAL and it made things much worse???
Hey guys, tried out VE Analyze Live and tried tuning the miata with it. Seems to have made things much worse than when I started driving. I had to roll back to just get the car home.
Its also doing this weird fuel or spark cut thing when i give it a hard blip of throttle all of a sudden, in gear or neutral, doesnt matter. If I floor it in gear it doesnt do it, just a sudden stab of throttle causes this. Kindve at a loss on both of these issues, took a video of the spark/fuel cut issue though here: Brain: I tried starting over with your base map bone stock after the VE Analyze because VEAL made the car run really bad when I started up after that. Made all of the necessary changes to support my larger injectors, and vTPS and the car ran even worse, like super shitty and wouldnt idle. Ended up rolling back to before I tried VEAL today, and its back to running how it was, AFRs look okay, but are kinda all over the place when I crack throttle and on decel sometimes it doesnt do over-run fuel cut. Not sure what to do now, if VEAL doesnt work... I dont know where to start :-/ |
Could be a number of things. Can you post a log?
|
Make sure your VTPS is not noisey, to me it sounds like your VTPS is not working properly hence the fuelcut not acting properly, and possible it could be activation Acceleration enrichment depending on how much noise is in the vtps feed.
Check it using the data logs, to make sure its not all over the place. |

What type of unit? Who built it? Where did you get the settings from? Please post tune.
|
For starters it looks like your 40kpa row is a little lean at idle.
I think I see one event at the end of your log of what you're talking about. 15% throttle, 70kpa, and I'm seeing 19afr. Either you fuel table is weird there or you have a rev limit/launch setting messing with it. |
turn off launch control.
if VEAL makes things worse, then you have bad AFR targets. VEAL is pretty damn good at getting the fuel map to match your desired AFRs. post the tune file. a log is almost useless with the tune that goes with it. |
If you want to test how your settings work, you can restrict VEAL to a very small region and run it. There's ways to add filters via text.
check this out: https://www.miataturbo.net/megasquir...ng-fuel-68697/ I assume they still can be used. More detail here: Megasquirt Support Forum (MSEXTRA) ? Help with Analyze Live filter please... (View topic) copypasta: key operators of an expression you will see are: && Logical AND || Logical OR Remembering that with a custom filter, if the expression resolves to true, the data is filtered and will not be used, thus the expression: (tpsDOT > 100) || (rpm < 800 && fuelload < 15) || (advance < 1 ) means: if tpsDOT > 100 OR ( rpm <800 AND fuelload < 15 ) OR (advance < 1) the data will be filtered. that is really 3 conditions, by using the OR in there, if any 1 is true, that record will be filtered. (rpm > 4000 && rpm < 2000) || (advance < 5 && advance > 35) || (fuelload < 40 && fuelload > 80) || (tpsdot > 10) and knowing that any thing that is TRUE above will be ignored you'll basically only auto tune when: rpm is between 2000-4000 load is between 40 - 80 tpsdot is below 10 advance is between 5-35 degrees which should be only in light acceleration.. you may need to tweak those values if it's too restrictive. and keep in mind I haven't used this functionality in like 5 years. |

Got Ken Culver to take a look for me and the biggest problem I was facing was that my injector dead time and REQ_FUEL was screwing things up. I used the calculator for REQ_FUEL initially and then set my RX8 injector dead time to .9ms as suggested and that made it run like shit. Currently they are at 1.200 and .8 REQ_FUEL and it seems that everything is running great. Very smooth and whatnot. He did turn all of the fancy shit all off to eliminate a lot of variables when trying to tune it, so I now have to slowly reenable all of those random little things and then test them. Attached screenshots of my AFR table and VE Table as well just for shits and giggles, as well as my current tune. |
Incidentally, the "advance < 5" portion of the VEAL filter will make sure it doesn't change your fuel when rev limiters / launch / etc. are active.

Weird thing was that before he messed with it, it ran well to the point of being drivable and not too lean. When we went outside to look at the car around lunch time, it was running like shit before he fixed it again. Didnt do a VEAL on the way to work either so thats the weird thing to me. It runs a pretty consistent 15-15.7 during cruise and actually gets rich now under accel. Still gotta fiddle with TPSdot accel enrichment, but that seems alright as well. Idle is only slightly less smooth than OEM right now, but idc much about that. I dont have AC so nothing to worry about there with AC Idle up or whatnot. I have been running VEAL though now that I have things working better and I dont notice much of a difference, but I guess its making things better?
