Question VVT Swap - Cranking / No Start

Hi Miata enthusiasts!

Disclaimer: I apologize in advance, I am a beginner in the topic we are discussing. I tried doing my research but cannot seem to figure it out myself.

I swapped a VVT Engine into my "91 Miata and I am in the process of getting it to run and idle.

MS-Labs (Revenant) MS3-Basic for 91 Miata with 01-05 Basemap from Bofi-racing UK.
NA6 Wiring Harness with custom extension pieces made for the VVT Engine sensors
Toyota Cops, Sequential Ignition harness
FlowForce 640cc sequential injection harness(preparing for boost in the near future)
36-2 Bofiracing triggerwheel

Some questions as I cannot get it seem to run idle:

Tested all coils (all are ticking)
  • Coil A - Cyl 1
  • Coil B - Cyl 2
  • Coil C - Cyl 3
  • Coil D - Cyl 4
Tested all injectors (I hear all squirting):
  • Injector A - Cyl 1
  • Injector B - Cyl 3
  • Injector C - Cyl 4
  • Injector D - Cyl 2

Locked my ignition timing to 10 degrees, I hear what I think is the car trying to start. But it backfires loudly after ~4 seconds so I turn off the car instantly.
  1. Are my injectors/coils wired up correctly? (do they fire into the correct cylinder?)
  2. What would be something to verify as to why it doesn't start, could it be injecting to much fuel as these flow much more?
Edit 25-05-2022:
I'm a n00b.

Cranking Advance(degrees) was set to a Minus value from the base map? Changed that to 10 degrees.

Channels should be like:
Ign/InjA = cyl 1
Ign/InjB = cyl 3
Ign/InjC = cyl 4
Ign/InjD = cyl 2

All my coils were bad, Ignition triggers were incorrect. Resolved both, changed crank timing as per above to 10 degrees and locked base timing to 10 degrees. Added a little fuel, fired right up.

Oh man, I am having the exact issues as you right now. All ticking and squirting. I am about to rip all the wiring out and run one connection at a time to test.

I finally resolved all major issues yesterday and did my first start!! Idling at 850rpm dead-on at 14.7 after adding a little bit of fuel in the idle cells, Rev makes amazing base maps. For me the biggest issue appeared to be a mix of 4 dead coils (yes, all 4) and incorrect ignition triggers.

Happy to talk to you, I'm not an expert by any means, but maybe I can help diagnosing or point you in the right direction.

Yup, incorrectly wiring the ignition outputs will do that. Good job figuring it out.
