Default What do you think of my tune? 600kg and circa 220bhp.

Good evening, new member here from the UK
Proud owner of an MNR Vortx with a 1.8 engine out of a Mk1 for the past year. Turbocharged by the previous owner and raced / tracked for 3 years by him since it was built.
Car is non intercooled currently and runs with no O2 sensor, just a MAP. MS2 PNP.
Was tuned previously when it was turbo'd however don't have much details regarding this.
I resprayed the car myself last summer and this year i'm planning to get stuck into the mechanicals and teach myself about tuning which I don't really have the foggiest about.

I've had an idle issue, car idles quite high on cold start (it seems to get it upto temperature quickly) and then when up to temp eases off to about 1200 rpm but when I find the idle is very surgy.
For this reason I managed to get hooked upto the ECU for the first time today and pull the tune off.

Wonder if anyone would be able to have a look and pass comment on it generally? If the tune is trash I know not to bother trying to fine tune it but to start from scratch.

Car of course has been driven for 4 years like this inc multiple track days without any issues so it seems to be doing the trick but you never know...

several things stick out on the tune to me.

1. Ignition map looks pretty trash. Huge transitions, no smoothing - engines dont like that. Table scaling is different from what is shown on the AFR table. What is target max boost?
2. AFR map is questionable, 11.5AFR at 14psi is considered rich, this could be low 12s. Unsure of why the idle area would target 13s but the engine may be happy there
3. no overboost protection is enabled.

As for idle, only open loop idle control is enabled. If you want better characteristics from cranking/startup and running, you need to tune closed loop idle. Lots of resources out there to address all these problems.

Thank you sir! That’s exactly what I wanted so I know what I need to look at!
I think the car / turbo has the wastegate set at pretty much 14-15psi although my boost gauge is being iffy so about to order a new one, then il more accurately be able to see what the peak boost im getting is off the current set up

could the car be set up to be running rich at higher boosts due to the lack of intercooler and IAT?

and yes I noticed the overboost protection being off, would this be as simple as enabling it and choosing parameters for it to kick in?

would you recommend doing a log from cold start and then driving and then having that side by side to tune ignition / firming / AFR?

You don't need a boost gauge. Just drive and take a log and note your maximum manifold pressure.

To be honest, I'm surprised it hasn't blown up without an IC,IAT, and WBO2.

I will do, i'll do a log and see what MAP peak I get. To be fair, it does have an IAT and from what I can see it also has timing retard based on MAT and of course mixture runs richer at high boost which I guess is where its getting a bit of a safety margin from but it's far from ideal
I can put a WBO2 in that's not an issue, it looks like it'll be necessary going forward to fix the tune, may as well just IC at the same time as its been on the to do list and then fix the tune in one go.

I have Westfield with the mk2 1.8 and MSM turbo. Dynoed 235rwhp @ 10psi. Currently running 12ish. It's a bit heavier though, around 675kg.

Thanks for posting your tune mate, had a look through it and quite useful to compare to!
Nice to see another kit owner here! 235 at 675 that must still shift!
