I have the 1.6 that came out of one of the cars I did a 1.8 swap on.

The engine was running great and not smoking at all with 225k on it. It has a brand new water pump, timing belt and tensioner. The girl that I bought the car from was using the car to commute for NC to VA 5 days a week, 90 mile round trip. I replaced the original clutch for her at 217k, if that tells you how the car was treated.

It could be used without issue, but with 225k, I would assume it being used as a core for a built motor.
