I think this is a direct bolt on for any 1.8l miata. Maybe someone else could verify. I'll try to find some evidence later.

Why can't you be on the left coast?

You are correct, it should bolt in to any 94-05, with the exception of the MSM. I'm using a 4.1 Torsen form a 94 in my 2000

How about just the 3.9 differential? I can swap it into my carrier?

hmmm ... perhaps I should sell my 4.10 torsen which I just bought and buy this.

It's probably cheaper and easier then swapping in 3.9 gears.

Hows the carrier? Was the rear end pulled from a wreck?

Yes. Pop the axles out, take the PPF and driveshaft off, remove the perimeter bolts, pull the entire diff out of the housing, insert new diff. Assembly is reverse of disassembly. I'm sure I'm leaving some steps out, like fluid and stuff. I think someone did a write-up on m.net a while ago but its dirt simple. I swapped my 4.3 open for a 4.1 torsen when I had the housing out to replace the bushings with MazdaComp units.

Take the thing that looks like this:

Remove the part that looks like this:

So the housing looks like this:

Then take your new 3.9 one of these:

Then make it look like this again:

Seriously guys, this is stupid simple and well documented on this forum and others. I'm feeling nice today so I'll throw you this bone: Miata Drivetrain Interchange Guide

Warning: Some of the above images may be 1.6 parts and should be used for reference only.

Carrier is really clean. I got it from a junk yard to replace my open, but then changed my mind on the 3.9 ratio and realized it was too expensive and too much trouble to switch the ratio/lsd unit and picked up a 4.3 lsd. I'll try to put up pictures later.

Were asking if it was possible, or whether I wanted to ship just the differential? I might consider that.

I am willing to ship now. Buyer pays for shipping. Local offers are still preferred.

EB, was it a local Boston area junkyard? Any leads to who has Miatas at the local yards and is reasonable?

Correct, MSM uses bigger axles so they don't fit into the diff. I'm not sure about the hub, but I would imagine they are bigger on that side too.
