I'd say its main purpose is to keep you from melting things in and around the area of your brake master cylinder. What would I know though, I've only melted 3 reservoirs before making mine....

I understand the general purpose, but I didn't see anything on the rear of this particular shield to protect the master cylinder. I'm not debating if does or does not protect that area I just didn't know if maybe it was only meant to protect the hood, and he had a separate shield for the master cylinder.
