Posting this for a friend of mine who bought this unit brand new, but based on advice from his installer/tuner decided to go with a Link G4+ standalone.

MegaSquirt-II Programmable EFI ECU System with PCB v3.0 and black case. Fully assembled.
Built by Symtech Laboratories out of Florida, USA.
Product # EMG-1-001, MS2 EMS ECU , Std 2.5bar MAP Sensor, Generic/Standard Model.
Brand New.
Comes with 6ft wiring harness, serial to USB adapter, and brand new IAT sensor,
Decided to go with another standalone computer that the tuner prefers.

Efini~FC3S, I tend to agree with you. 
I think it is simply a case of the tuner/installer wanting to use a standalone system that he is familiar with since he has done a ton of installation and tuning jobs using Link standalones.
I am not sure about the harness wiring since it is a universal setup.

Reverant is correct, from the research I have done, it will work on Miatas but it will require wiring based on the ECU pinouts of the intended Miata model (90-93) or (94-97) and is not a plug and play solution.

On top of that, it's not clear whether the ECU has the correct mods for a Miata (CAS, idle valve, fan control, etc).
