Default Screamer! Ported BP4W head, Maruha cams, SUB lifters, Double Springs, +1 Valves

I have decided to list for sale my very fancy, professionally built 1999 Miata (BP4W) cylinder head.

It was built to make all the power and have all the revs. I never got to install it on my engine. The previous owner was adjusting the cam gears in the wrong direction and was unhappy with his results,
It has been on my shelf wrapped in plastic for years as I upgraded things like the BMW 6 speed transmission to be able to hold the power it was going to make. Unfortunately, I was injured at work about 4 years ago and was unable to lift much weight, work on the car, or drive it on the track anymore. Life happens.

Here is your chance to make insane power at screaming RPMs that would leave regular heads gasping for air.

This head has seen a few highway miles - It was driven to FM and back from Michigan and had a summer driving season on the car by the P. O. - Reportedly fewer than 7,500 mostly freeway miles. The head has been built with high lift cams and springs to allow sustained revs into the 8,000's aided by the higher seat pressure springs, oversized valves, the lightweight SUB setup, adjustable cam gears, and better breathing high-lift, high-duration camshafts. This would would make a great head for either a forced induction monster or an NA screamer motor.

-Ported and assembled by professional engine machinist BogusSVO of MiataTurbo
-Very expensive Maruha 264*/264* 10mm lift camshafts
-Fidanza adjustable cam gears
-Supertech Light Double Springs (63# springs)
-Shim Under Bucket lifters (required for reduced base circle of camshafts) (these take hours for a machinist or assembler just to set up properly)
-+1mm oversized intake valves (Supertech Stainless)
-+1mm oversized exhaust valves (Supertech Inconel)
-Bronze valve guides
-New Valve retainers
-New OEM valve stem seals
-Valve cover has been cut for exposed cam gears
-Valve cover painted in wrinkle black
EDIT: -Includes CAS on back of head for accurate timing (Have you priced a CAS lately? Holy cow!)

Assembly will come with the paperwork for the Maruha camshafts.

An absolute steal at $ 2,600.
Selling at $2,200 plus actual freight using Pirate Ship (best shipping prices anywhere)

Ignition coils in first pic are not included.

I'm a little sad because this was going to be so much fun.

If you buy it, please post dyno results so I can enjoy it too!

This is everything I ever wanted in a head job. Unfortunately, I can't swing the cash.

(Oh, how many times have I said this very line in my mis-spent youth!)

Good luck on the sale

GLWS! What a deal. Would have snatched it a year ago before the VVT swap.

Stupid question, but where does the cam sensor sit now that the front of the cover is completely cut?

That's not a stupid question.

The head is equipped with a CAS on the back of the head, just like any NA8 would use.

The CAS comes with it. That's a value of over $100 to many people right there.

PM's replied to.

Boxed it up today and weighed at 60lbs even. It is packed extremely well using closed-cell foam sheets several inches thick.
If anyone else wants to estimate freight, it is coming from Plant City, FL 33563 and the box dimensions are 24x16x13 inches.

Thank you for your interest.

This head was never sold because shipping was too high to the Canadian buyer who was interested. I got busy and stopped promoting it, so I'm bumping it now.

How would this head pair with a power goal of 350whp w/gen 2 2860R? I legit know nothing about engine building all new to me.

Currently in the process of building a motor and was only gonna do a bottom end build but this head appeared with good timing.

It would actually pair quite well. With this head, you would be able to make that power goal with less boost and therefore less heat and detonation. With that turbo you would have to run 25 lb or so with a stock head to reach that number. With this arrangement you should be able to reach with several pounds less boost. It would essentially make it easier to reach that number or beyond.

Am noob. If nothing else was done to the motor except slap this on and tune, n/a, what kind of power/tq would you be expecting?

I would guess around 20% more, if your intake, exhaust, and bottom end can make the most of the revs. You always have to find the most restrictive part as you build, and try to optimize it. The stock head and cams are usually the holdup. Could be more. I wish I had installed it so I could tell you firsthand. It would have been fun to make power all the way to redline instead of tapering off.

I’ve seen similar setups make 160-170. Like six said, with header/flattop/intake and a standalone. Both the engines I did with built heads had a BE pump and aftermarket damper to handle the revs. Should probably do rods, but we didn’t.

So, that sounds like more than 20% if you've got the right supporting modifications.

I'm thinking what it would have done for my car that was already making 325whp and had the BMW transmission to hold all that power...

20-25% more would have been all over the 400whp number...........

Nice score Johnny! I was tempted to scoop this for my turbo car but I cringe to think of what I'd have to do to my drivetrain if I did.

Thanks Fire! (and Six for being willing to part with it!) The rings on Sean's old car didn't like sitting for 8+ years looks like, so I'm starting to assemble parts for the inevitable engine swap and this is a fantastic start! I'm going to try to keep the current engine (a 1.6 >.< ) propped up for a while, though, so I can take the time to do things right. It's not the happiest of engines but it's not dead yet.

It went out on Friday. Labeled as fragile almost as a joke because I know it will be thrown.

It's here! And thanks to Six's stellar packing job UPS wasn't able to wreck it!

I did some preliminary research and a little poking around to see what I can find for blocks - there's a guy in the area looking to sell a bare BP4W block and crankshaft he spun a bearing on for a couple of hundred bucks. No idea if I'll pick it up or not but at least there are a few options. I wish Mike's Place was still around...

I'm very happy to hear it arrived intact. I didn't have complete faith it would. I probably should have insured it.

I'm curious for dyno results one day.
