Default For trade? my 3.9 torsen for any ratio good condition torsen

I have a 3.9 with 120k miles with no indication of issues. I have a 3.6 R&P I want to put in my car. I could just swap my 3.9 for the 3.6, or if there is someone who wants to swap from their 4.1 or 4.3 to a 3.9, they could come by with their car, help me swap my 3.6 into their whatever, and then take my 3.9. Could be fun. I live in Carmel Valley, CA.

Seems a great proposition. Do you have the needed tools to set up the 3.6?

Well, I could be mistaken, as I’ve never done it, but my understanding is that to change a R&P, one must shim the pinion for proper mesh. Different procedure than swapping out an assembly, even a pumpkin.

Bluing, dial indicator(s), etc.

I'm messing with you, but yeah I'd need the appropriate tools and such. Definitely just in the planning stages at the moment.

Also, I've got Mazdaspeed bushings on my carrier, so the ideal arrangement would involve the same.

Are you interested?

Thanks. My hope is that if someone takes me up in it we can figure it out together.

Do you plan on replacing carrier bearings and pinion? You'll need a new crush sleave regardless. I have a dial gauge setup for ring backlash and a inch pound torque wrench for pinion preload north in Santa Cruz..

Santa Cruz is super convenient. Are you looking for a 3.9, or are you being super helpful just 'cause?

I'm definitely looking for a taller gear, I'm not making tons of power but my 5speed and 4.3 run out of gear quick.I have a spare open 4.1 ring set also,Idk it could work out?

I have done a ring swap but just switched out pumpkins and didn’t remove the pinion.I made a jig to hold the assembly in place while I adjusted the ring to pinion fit. I still have it and the micrometer and 1” dual indicator I used. I live in Morgan Hill.

Oh, and I do have a 4:10 Torsen sitting around as well as a lift, tools, torque wrenchs, etc.We met a long time ago when I came to your house in SJ to pick up a set of injectors and talked about Max Jacks lifts and how you wanted one for your carport but you didn’t think your landlord would let you drill out the concrete pad or if it was stong enough to hold the anchors.

What a great community! I'm now awash with offers for help, so thanks everyone.

cxracing I'd love to drop by and say hi some time. I moved down to Carmel valley where I own my house with a decent sized garage. Maybe a lift is finally in my future! I drive through Morgan Hill about once a week.

Looks like conekiller and I are going to get together and see what we can do about grinding my gears

As a rule of thumb you always want to keep the ring with its original pinion as the 4.1s and 3.9s have different amount of teeth. Out of curiosity how's it holding up?

Sorry, didn’t make that clear. I swapped the torsen internals of a 4:10 with open diff internals of a 4:30 by switching the rings over and put them back together with the corresponding pinions. It’s been holding up quite well. Probably some thing like 10-15 track days without issue.

In all honesty, I can live without a 3:9. However, if you and conekiller want to meet at my house I can help out with the tools and space for a quick swap. I haven’t done a gearing swap for a while and it will be a good refresher. PM me if you guys want tomeet up for a tech day.

That's super nice! I'll definitely hit you up. If not for this job, maybe another one.

Since I was late to the party on this one if anyone else has a set of 3.9's keep me in mind. Looking at my track data I see they will be the perfect gears to eliminate a shift or 2 in critical areas.

Props for Nigel. I bought a lotus diffuser from him a few years back. Nice easy guy to work with.

Have fun at the diff party!

I forgot about that! Sorry I couldn't help you out this time. I've seen 3.9 R&Ps come up occasionally for not too much money.
