I gotta drive some liquor into me before i can make the decision to spend that much more money.

I'll probably do it.

soviet 11-06-2014 01:00 PM

I mean, already basically wasted like at least $50 just by having the initial payment made ALMOST A YEAR AGO. Could have invested that money instead.

Leafy 11-06-2014 01:07 PM

Ouch, glad I was short the cash now. At $750 + either 100-150 for install tools or 400 for install you're pretty close to a swapping in a getrag that already has this gearing and is stronger. This makes me sad.

Erat 11-06-2014 01:12 PM

I won't be a dick but i do remember having concerns about certain Asian manufactures*... I also remember being shat on while others praised that work.

Now all of a sudden we have to pay more for something made in America. Because quality is a concern.

I'm a little torn, with the new price I'm on the fence as to whether it's worth my investment. It's possible 3.6 gears would fit my simple needs, I just liked the idea of even taller gears.

HHammerly 11-06-2014 06:42 PM

it sounds like we may not have 40 people in for the revised group buy, so it is possible that it may not hapen at all if say less than half of the original group stay in...
What are the p/n's for the 3.6:1 gears from Mazda?

JasonC SBB 11-06-2014 07:41 PM

Bummer. How much would a CTS-V 3.3 diff cost?

And would it mean bye-bye PPF and hello NVH?

karter74 11-06-2014 07:54 PM

Somehow I doubt all too many people will drop out on this. This was more of an impulse for me instead of plunking down the cash for a 3.6 rear end. I'm gonna sleep on it and see if it's really worth it. At the original price, definitely, now ~50% higher.....I'm not so sure.

HHamerly, the part numbers for the 3.6 are as follows

MA02-27-110 - Ring & Pinion
M533-17-400A - Speedo Drive Gear

Decisions, decisions...

fredb 11-06-2014 09:07 PM

Going to need to think on this a bit. On one hand I'd like the taller gears , on the other I'm not the one that set the original price . I did commit a sizable chunk of cash almost a year ago. Should I pay more because someone else didn't do their homework. I feel like I've honored my end of the deal.

guttedmiata 11-06-2014 11:22 PM

Already sent my email confirming I'm still in. Let's face it, we've all spent $200 in less useful ways.

fredb 11-06-2014 11:58 PM

And if there's another price increase before we see parts ?

slmhofy 11-07-2014 12:23 AM

I'm going to start looking into what a Getrag is going to cost. They're like $3-400ish on ebay.

wowmiata 11-07-2014 11:25 AM

I got the same email, and this is definitely a tough decision. I paid the 550 kind of late in the group buy, probably around May or so. I'm relatively tight on money right now, so trying to make the decision if paying another 200 for a part I won't see for 4-6 more months, or just get a refund and figure it out at a later date...but I do really appreciate the seller keeping us informed and up to date. He could have easily gone for a lower quality product and sent them out a couple months back.

Question though, as I have never messed with gearing before how will the taller gears effect acceleration? Will it accelerate slower just with a higher top speed or what? And in the ~250 whp range, will it really be noticeable (the loss of acceleration)?

I'm on my phone so I can't quote anyone right now, but I also feel I've held up my end of the bargain - but I understand the situation. It just kinda sucks.

As for installation, what kind of tools are needed? I've heard that changing out your gears is about on the same difficulty level as changing out a clutch. Is that about accurate?

I'll probably need some booze to commit also, but it'll probably still happen for me too.

Jeffbucc 11-07-2014 12:11 PM

I'd leave setting backlash to the pros if you have never done it before.

I'm kinda glad I didn't commit to this now. 1k is a little steep when I already have my 3.63 R&P.

viperormiata 11-07-2014 12:38 PM

On the fence.

guttedmiata 11-07-2014 04:37 PM

You guys crack me up with your "I've upheld my end of the bargain". We bought into the DEVELOPMENT of a custom part. Did you think this was the same as adding a clutch to your cart on flyin miata's website?

18psi 11-07-2014 05:52 PM

I'm not sure if you invest money often, but for most people that's not how it works.
They invest with clear and precise deadlines and goals, not just send a ton of money to someone and say "if and when you ever figure this thing out, go ahead and deliver what you promised, and if you need a bunch more money and years more time, that's fine too"

I'm not saying that's what MR is doing, cause it appears that he's handling the issue pretty good or at least as good as he can, but you can't just get upset at people for getting cold feet now.

guttedmiata 11-07-2014 06:36 PM

I'm not getting upset at anyone. The comments seem to be hinting that the price should stay $550 no matter the manufacturing cost and that it's Bill's problem for quoting that price. He was very clear what his intentions were and had no way of knowing the results in advance. We paid money for a non existent product and everyone knew that going in.

And for the record, when I invest money there is a chance I'll lose it all because I can't see the future - the same as Bill. It's not like anyone is out their money. He is offering a full refund despite his time and expenses thus far. That's better than my Scottrade account offers.

Things changed. Stay in or get out. It's really that simple. Complaining about it isn't going to make the samples from Asia any better or the manufacturing in the US any cheaper.

18psi 11-07-2014 06:39 PM

Of course. And I don't think anyone is complaining about it. This thread is staying surprisingly civil despite the bad news.
Anywho, I have no dog in this race or anything against anyone, just voicing my opinion. Maybe I just misunderstood your post.

Erat 11-07-2014 06:53 PM

After looking at the gearing calculator again, it's still what i want for my car. So i'm staying in.
I have a feeling i can get them installed for only a couple hundred bucks. I hope with people backing out that the price won't get much above $750. I know i'm paying for a custom part at this point, but there is a limit.

I also have a lot more faith in US manufactures. Though time will tell.
The worst part is the wait. Bill said 4 months from when he places the order. I'm not sure if that's 4 months until he gets some gears to test, or 4 months until the testing will be complete and we get sent some. Hell, they could show up before my tecna coilovers.
