MSPNP just installed, car won't idle on basemaps, please help!

Hello,

Just got my MSPNP installed, map put on the ECU (90-93 no AFM for my 1990 Miata with the 1.6 still in it), car starts up just fine, tries to idle for a moment, falters and then dies.

Car had been sitting for a while, but i put octane booster in it when it didn't start, does it sound like a fuel issue?

Please help, was hoping to go for the first ride in a long time tonight.

Edit: Wanted to let everyone know i did search, found subjects for idle droop and rough idle, but not doesn't work at all...

Also, i did up my idle screw, but that doesn't seem to have had an effect.

stock injectors?

Nagase 03-08-2010 08:09 PM

Yes, the only thing "performance altering" is the intake, which has IAT and MAP in the manifold. Other than that, stock engine. Just put a six speed on, but that shouldn't change anything.

Thank you!

Did you set your base timing in the MS?

Nagase 03-08-2010 08:14 PM

Oh, could it be set negitive right now?

Nagase 03-08-2010 08:47 PM

See it now, set it to positive and it still didn't run.

Did you take out that STOP fuse under the hood? And you set it to 10 then time your adjusting the top number then set it back to -10 when timed.

Nagase 03-08-2010 08:52 PM

i did take out the fuse, yes. First thing i did there. :)

How am i supposed to set my timing to any number if the car won't run?

Nagase 03-08-2010 10:58 PM

Ok, just put in five gallons of premium, the car is still doing the same thing.

More notes:

First time i try to start it, if i wait a bit between, it starts REALLY well. Nice and strong, comes up to about 2000 rpm and then just falls dead. If i try to push in the gas while it's falling, the car makes a dying sound (like a chugging) and falls dead too.

If i try to start again soon after the above, it turns over and tries to start, and makes sounds like ignition is happening, but just won't go.

Sometimes when i turn the key to ON, before i go to start, there'll be a weird GRRRGHT sound from near the starter or main fuse box. Any idea there?

Thank you everyone for your help so far!

Ok, i tried to start the car while holding in the gas and it KIND of idled but it was SUPER rough, and when i let out there was a loud POP noise. :(

Nagase 03-08-2010 11:44 PM

Plugs were fouled when i pulled them, cleaned them out, tried to start again.

Sounds like it wants to backfire. Could the timing be so far off that the car won't start?

Nagase 03-08-2010 11:59 PM

Alright, managed to get it running for a little while by pulling the spark back to 50. Then the idle slowly drops, step by step until it gets too low and dies out.

Any ideas?

Nagase 03-09-2010 12:36 AM

Alright, i set the dashpot time to 250, adjusted the throttle linkage to try to get some air in, and it can just barely idle for a while before it dies, slowly dropping up and down the whole time until it gets low enough to die. Dies pretty much instantly if i take the clutch out in neutral though.

Still smells REALLY rich, though.

Do you have the correct firmware loaded up?

Nagase 03-09-2010 12:51 AM

Donno anything about firmware... i'll assume that's not an .msq file?

Nagase 03-09-2010 01:06 AM

Alright, read up, updated, and it holds a really terrible idle! Yay! :D Thank you, thank you!

This could be way off, but when I was having issues with my CLT not working I had a similiar issue. Not saying it is your CLT (unless the value is wrong in MT/TS) but could be your cold start enrichments. Mine would crank with a poppoppop, then crank again and a few more pops, then crank again and it would jump up to 2000 and die, crank, start and idle for a bit longer, die, crank etc.. until after about 5 minutes it would manage to stay idleing. Then I had to wait another 10minutes or it would die if I gave it gas. Once my CLT was fixed and cold-start enrich was set it starts everytime, idles great, and I can drive it as soon as I start it. I would also replace the plugs if they are pretty bad, I fouled mine doing pretty much the same thing as you and they needed to be replaced. Also check for vacuum leaks, that was one issue I had when starting mine.

Thank you very much for the post!

i'm sorry, what do you mean by CLT? What kind of settings was it at? What did you change them to?

Nagase 03-09-2010 02:33 AM

Alright, my timing partner left, i'll need to finish timing it in the morning...

Unfortunately there is another issue that just came up. My clutch is dragging slightly. With the pedal out in neutral, the real wheels spin (in the air). The pedal adjustment is fully out already, to no avail. Any tips?

Just something to try to check your IAT and CLT readings. With the car turned on, but not cranking or running, make sure you are getting realistic numbers for IAT (Intake Air Temp) and CLT (Coolant Temp) in Megatune (or Tunerstudio). If the car is cold, they will be close to each other and close to ambient.
