Default Daily Driver Motorsport steering wheel spacer for OEM steering wheel

Hi

I'm Giacomo from Italy.

I'm a mechanical engineer and I own, with my family, a company that makes parts for non automotive mechanical industry, GIROL SRL.

I am a sort of mad horse in family and I'm crazy about cars. I've made a very useful product for the MX-5 and many other cars, so we add this to our company catalog: the steering wheel spacer for the OEM steering wheel, which we sell as Daily Driver Motorsport

All MX-5 since the NA, does not have depth steering wheel adjustment. If you're tall, or you like sporty driving position (and if your MX-5 is turbo, I think you all do), you will miss this.

The only solution, until now, was fit a dished aftermarket steering wheel, with it's own hub. BUT, fitting the aftermarket steering wheel makes to loose the airbag and requires to re-wire the horn and on newer cars, you're going to loose the steering wheel commands too.

For this reasons we develop a steering wheel spacer that is direct fit between the steering column and the steering wheel, and makes the wheel come 2" closer to the driver.

No modifications are required on the car: no need to machine any part of the car, or to cut and extend wires. You simply pull out the steering wheel, insert the spacer in the steering column and re-fit the steering wheel on the steering wheel spacer, and enjoy your car with a total new driving position, keeping the airbag and all other steering wheel commands work.

The spacer is made of aluminium and steel, CAD designed and CAM CNC Machined starting from raw bar

It replicates the shape of the aluminium core of the steering wheel, even the spline, and it has the same slots that allows the wires to cross it, and to match PERFECTLY the clockspring assembly (which integrates the steering angle sensor).

The aluminium part of the spacer has concave external shroud that makes the spacer look like an OEM part at the end of the installation, and it is matt black anodized, to match the interior colour.

The steel part of the spacer replicates the steering column shaft, with spline and thread. And it has to be bolted on the aluminium part of the spacer during installation.

All steps are explained in fitting instructions, which are dedicated to the model of MX-5 you have. The spacer is available for NB, NBFL, NC and ND cars.

NB, NBFL and NCs shares the same steering wheel spacer, which has been designed by me to fit both cars. This means that the spacer can be removed from a NB and fitted on a NC as is, and viceversa.
The airbag wires on these cars are long enough to be easily reconnected to the airbag unit without being under stretch.

The ND has its own steering wheel spacer, not interchangeable with other models. Since NDs have steering wheel buttons, which are feeded by 14 wires inside the steering wheel, and because these wires are very short, we supply, included in price, a plug-in harness with OEM matching connectors.

ND cars since 2019 do have depth steering column adjustment from factory, but if you don't find it enough for you, the same spacer can be installed on 2019+ cars.
ND steering wheel spacer can be installed as is on the FIAT 124 Spider.

It doesn't matter if the car has automatic gearbox or has/miss steering wheel commands. The spacer fits in any case.

In any case, the spacer can be removed from the car in any moment, and everything returns as it was.

The spacer is always available in stock, matt black, and cost 245€ plus shipment and paypal fee.

Shipment by UPS tracked cost 35€ to the US and takes 5 days to cross the Ocean.

Paypal fee is usually 8€, we accept bank transfer as payment. But paypal is faster and safer for everybod

So total cost to have the spacer is 288 €

Let me share some pics.

We had one of these in Beaker, our ND STR car, and in Snoopy, our NB Club Sport. They rock, highly recommended.

Five year old thread.

57 posts, only about 7 of which show. Greyed out user name suggested banishment.

Don't hold your breath. Pity, looked good, Dan was a happy camper, but something has gone wrong somewhere ...

These are now sold by 949 Racing. I have one in my car and I love it, such a great idea!
