200-250whp

okay guys i am new to miatas. i just sold my srt-4 so i am a little familiar with turbos but not familiar enough to go out and buy a kit for my miata or piece one together, ive done a lot of research so far, but coming up with no answer.. i have researched the begi kits. greddy kits and some ebay kits..as stated, i am looking for a turbo kit that will put me around 200-250 whp and be able to be driven daily. car currently has 135k miles..also, i want to be able to run a FMIC and i want to have an hks bov.. what are my options here guys? im looking to spend around $1500 after im said and done

jtothawhat 09-25-2010 11:33 PM

Post and introduction for one, and you obviously didn't read the sticky in the DIY turbo section.

18psi 09-26-2010 12:17 AM

double that price tag and you may end up with something reliable.
otherwise be prepared to replace shit later

srtwizzy 09-26-2010 12:19 AM

what about the greddy turbo kit with megasquirt pnp? and a FMIC..im not looking to piece together my own kit

18psi 09-26-2010 12:24 AM

If you find a deal on a used greddy in decent shape (which is not THAT hard to do) you will probably be able to fit into 2k.

greddy basic kit - 800-1000
fmic - 200-300
ms - 300
wb - 150-200
exhaust - 300+
clutch - 200+

It starts adding up. Like I said, to make it a RELIABLE 200whp 1500 won't cut it plain and simple.

if your goal is just to REACH 200 and then baby it 80% of the time on stock clutch/etc then you may be able to fit into 1500.

Even then I highly doubt it since you lack wrenching/fabrication skills.

My suggestion to meet these two criteria involves a GReddy kit and an unscrupulous Dynojet operator. If you want a real, reliable 200whp and you don't want to piece your own kit together, I'd suggest that you triple your budget estimate.

levnubhin 09-26-2010 09:29 AM

Why do I find it hard to believe that you "researched" and came up with no answers? This forum must be useless.

Are you familiar with the Greddy? IOT reach 200+ whp, you're going to need to replace most of the Greddy kit. I have done what you're trying to do (Greddy? check. MSPNP? check. FMIC? check. Sold my SRT4? check.) and I only have the turbo and manifold left from the Greddy kit. A used Greddy and a used MSPNP by themselves will put you near your $1500 budget. Then you need a better clutch, downpipe, an IC, piping, WB02, exhaust, BOV, injectors, radiator...

Here's what you do - get the MS and injectors, 460cc will do the trick. Get the car running n/a on the MS and injectors, then install the turbo. Go ahead and do the clutch and tap the pan for the oil return because the Greddy uses the stock oil return on the wrong side of the engine, and it's ugly. Leave the spark on the basemap's settings and get the fuel roughly right with MLV. Then start thinking about getting to the dyno.

To get over 250 whp (uncorrected) is going to be tough with the Greddy. Get it over 230 and I don't think you'll be missing that other 20 whp. If you must break the 250 mark, IMO you'll need to upgrade the ignition (COPs) because you'll need more than 14 psi to do it. WI would be a good idea too, for peace of mind if nothing else. I dynoed without the WI connected and on the stock ignition and came within 3 hp (dynapack). We pulled 7 hp worth of timing and I'm happy at 240. I now run the WI and COPs and it's a very reliable, streetable car. I've driven it literally from coast to coast and the only time it broke down along the way was my dumbass fault.

let me know how that works out for ya

If you only have $1500 to spend on turbocharging your car, you need to reconsider your financial priorities. I'm willing to bet that this car is your only car, and you cannot afford to have it not running for any period of time. If you do manage to piece together a modest turbo kit for 1500, you're looking at 150hp at best, and be prepared to have the car in 'not running' condition a LOT more than you like.

aug 09-26-2010 12:19 PM

I spent about 1600 to complete my turbo kit. It's completely possible if you piece together your own kit. The consequence is losing your self respect- it involves a lot of low balling and eBay sniping. The only component I didn't skimp out on was my EMS, spent 700 on that.

Pitlab77 09-26-2010 07:07 PM

a search for 200-250 must surely have shown www.flyingmiata.com or BEGI

srtwizzy 09-26-2010 10:26 PM

if i pieced together a turbo kit, around how much would it be? what set ups are you guys runnin?

18psi 09-26-2010 10:29 PM

unless you fabricate lots of things yourself or find phenomenal deals there is still no way you'll fit into 1600.

I'd plan on at least 2k for a semi decent low boost setup

If you keep repeating the same question after everyone was kind enough to give you advice you're going to get gang raped.

If you lowball your way to a budget low boost setup, then you can get boosted for your budget.

But your goal is 200-250 with driveability and reliability. You can spend a lot if you buy everything new, or you can gather the pieces used as they come up in the classifieds and save some cash.

yeah anywhere near 200 whp is good for me, i could piece together a kit my self if i need to, i would just rather not because it is more time spent, but if needed be and cheaper, I guess this is my best bet

LOL, my car is my only car. But i am also a boss at working on it for the most part. This is a gay thread. Quit asking retard questions. Miata.net or club roadster will tell you everything will be ok while they spoon feed you. But then you will end up with 1500 dollars worth of crap on your floor and it wont work. God forbid you listen to the people that have had their miatas turboed.

whats up with all the dick heads on this forum? I'm just trying to get some tips on what I should do here. And who cares about proper grammar on a stupid car forum? I mean its ridiculous, i'm not here to learn how to use correct grammar, I really don't care what my grammar is like on this forum and I really don't need a bunch of people criticizing everything I am saying here. If your looking to correct some grammar, go be a high school teacher, and if you don't have any suggestions for me, then just post something on a different thread.

You need to kick back and lurk before you get banned, my man. Go re-read my first post in this thread and reflect. Notice how I laid it all out for you.

Now think how much more difficult it would be to read if I didn't care about grammar, spelling, or puncuation. We're not looking for absolute perfection, we just want you to show enough respect to the readers of your posts that they don't have to read the same sentence more than once to discern its meaning. You are asking us for help, after all.

You are not going to fucking last here. Might as well leave now and save yourself the humiliation dumbass.

Your grammar and communication skills are pretty much the only thing you can display on a forum to show that you're not a complete fucktard moron. If you choose to ignore that and communicate like a fucking inbred then no one will treat you seriously or help you.

We are not animals. You might be. We are not.

What about the 89-93 Mazda T28 Turbo+Intercooler CX-Racing kit I keep seeing on eBay. They say the kit has been tested unlike those other ebay kits where they dont include everything. They even include the FMIC in the package.
They sell the kit for $899 + $79 shipping.

I don't know what year he has but thats an option.

soloracer 09-28-2010 11:11 AM

Keep posting dude, it's great entertainment. Thing is, some of the people here were originally trying to be helpful but you wouldn't have any of it.

There are a lot of smart people on this board who are more than willing to share their experience and knowledge. It's expected that you take a little interest in learning and figuring out some things for yourself though. At LEAST search before you post, and do some honest research before you claim that you can't find any info.

I'm no kid and I'm a pretty good mechanic, but I always assume that I can learn from others. I try to be respectful and at least TRY to find answers and be informed before I post here. I honestly don't contribute a lot (mainly because I'm new to FI and am in student mode as far as I'm concerned) but I've been given very little crap here, if any.

Check yourself. Try a little humility and humor; it goes a long way here. I've seen some hopeless ass-hats change their tune and be welcomed, after a bit of razzing. Up to you if you want to stay and learn or go it alone.

Good luck.

mgeoffriau 09-28-2010 11:33 AM

The sad part is that you can absolutely get away with stupid noob questions here as long as you admit your own fail, contribute where you can, and generally make an effort to not actively lower the community per capita IQ.

Great defense mechanism. :ugh2:

Exactly...It's just not that difficult. I asked a dumb (already answered in the thread, but I was in a hurry and missed it) question on CR.net one time, and they beat the crap out of me. I responded that I was going back to MT.net where they were nice. They thought I obviously had no experience on MT.net when I said that.

This place has an undeserved reputation for being mean in my opinion. "Don't be an idiot." should just be a given in everyday life, let alone on the internets where all people have to go by is the way you write and the common sense you display. I love this place because it generally refuses to kowtow to the lowest common denominator.

I have a whp goal, budget, and plan to set it up. And guess what, I didn't ask, "what should I buy to get xxxwhp with xx$?" to get my answer.

I read as much info as I could, read and reread build threads, searched through the dyno threads, and so on. If I found my answers with out asking, why can't you?

16g. It came with the turbo, manifold, down pipe, supra 305cc injectors, and a afpr. I couldn't say no to the offer haha, I miss boost so much. I just need to gather up a few more items for the install. Hopefully I will be installing within the next 2 months.
