Garrett T25 turbo to PNP with BEGi kit on 1.6L

OK, first off I fully admit to being a Newbe but I have been doing a fair amount of research but seem to have gotten lost down the T25 turbo rabbit hole.

So one of the dirrections I'm entertaining is to buy a BEGi Shanghai kit and sell off the China turbo and replace it with a second hand Garrett Turbo so that I can get the CARB sticker for it. (I'm assuming as the EO just lists the brand of Turbo and BEGi sells different versions of the Garrett blower that as long as it says Garrett on it, it's OK for carb?)

I've found a number of T25 size Garrett units but there are a lot of variables and most of the second hand guys don't list much info. Also the outlet flanges from the compressor seem to come with either a clamp on hose type attachment or a flang with 3 bolts. Also seem to be a lot of T25 size Garretts coming out of Nissan SR20DET and 300ZX twin turbo cars that seem like others have used on their miatas but I'm not sure if they are plug and play with the BEGi kit

I haven't been able to get on the BEGi site for a while but was wondering if anyone can tell me what fittings on the turbo assembly I should be looking for?

I am looking to keep my set up low to mid PSI range 5-8psi so I don't have to upgrade a lot of other parts and keep it fairly simple and reliable. I'm thinking I'd be very happy with 175hp as long as it won't over stress things when I decide to go to the track a couple times a year.

What specs should I be looking for? Most of the second hand guys know nothing about the functional details of their turbos but I do see a lot of different info on the castings when they send pics. How can I identify a couple of choices that would work well for my 1.6L just by looking at the pictures?

It's not the turbo that makes it CARB legal - it's the entire kit. If you want a carb-legal turbo Miata, buy a Greddy kit. They're the only ones that are carb legal.

But, if, for some reason you still want a Begi-S, just keep the chinacharger. Many of us are running them no problem. If, once again, for some reason, you decide to upgrade the turbo, avoid the 300zx turbos, they have a funny exhaust outlet flange, it's different from the standard 5-bolt.

buy a SR20DET turbo, send it to BEGi, don't pay for their supplied turbo and have them clock, port, and weld your turbo so it fits from the get go.

What needs to be welded?

Braineack 03-20-2010 05:29 PM

Actually, if you read the EO, the BEGi kit (as long as it has the Garrett, IHI, or Aerodyne) is CARB legal for 1.6l and 1.8l up to 8psi and can include an intercooler and timing controls. If think the Greddy kit is much more limited in what add ons are allowed.

I just can't tell from the CARB website if the model turbo matters as they only refer to the turbo by manufacturer.

Sorry, but our webpage host has been installing new something and when done our page went into a tailspin. Ought to be sorted out by sometime this evening.

With regard to the components of any given system, you are free to order any specific piece, or send us a turbo you already have and we can prepare it to fit into our stuff.

All this is pretty easy.

Hi Corky,

If I supplied a SR20 turbo and you fitted it to one of your kits, I'm assuming you would be able to ship the kit back to me with the CARB sticker, right?

About how long is turn around for such a request?

frostyllama 03-21-2010 02:00 AM

Very interested in this as well

When I check posts about SR20 turbos I see alot of listings about A/R of .60 and trim of 60 but when I check out pictures the castings seem to list A/R 80 also M22 is also in the casting

See pick in this e-bay posting Garrett T25 Turbo Sr20det S13 Silvia Nissan Skyline JDM : eBay Motors (item 150423699983 end time Mar-21-10 16:27:25 PDT)

Is this the turbo I should be looking for or is the seller confused about what he has?

ThatGuy85 03-21-2010 05:05 PM

In for a good answer. I actually have the SR20 turbo and I'm lookin for the proper manifold.

18psi 03-21-2010 05:07 PM

Proper manifold as in exhaust manifold? Any t2

frostyllama 03-21-2010 05:30 PM

its the carb legal stuff i'm curious about here.

Cxracer 03-21-2010 07:38 PM

I promise to post back once I find out for sure this would lead to a CARB stickered kit.

Braineack 03-21-2010 08:04 PM

the A/R of teh compressor wheel is no matter. It's the A/R of the turbine housing that you need to care about.

the SR20 T25 is a .80 A/R compressor and .64 A/R turbine. that image looks correct, you should see that m-24 as well.

Braineack 03-21-2010 08:53 PM
