im heading to the parts store (junk yard) here directly. what is a good OEM intercooler that is readily available?

 

The Mitsubishi Starion/Dodge Conquest is probably one of the better OEM 'coolers you're likely to find at a junkyard.

Volvos are too tall and thin (although they have been used in Miatas before...it ain't pretty). VAG (Jettas, Passats, TT, Beetles, GTI, A4, etc.) are going to be rare find in most junkyards, and they're smaller, side-mount coolers anyway. The Eclipse/Talon had decent intercoolers, but they, too, were sidemounts, and would be a bit annoying to route. Saabs are mountable, but tiny. MX-6 GT/Probe GT are mountable in the mouth, also, and a bit bigger than Saab 'coolers. The RX-7 TT are do-able and probably roughly the same size/mountability as the MX-6/Probe.

Maybe check for some Isuzu trucks?

 

Mistubishi starion/dodge conquest 14 or 16 row. 14 row is the best if you have a choice between the two.

Saab 900 intercoolers have also worked well for many members on this forum.

Probably the 2 most commonly used on budget turbo miata builds. Starion is easier to route over the radiator....that's why I chose it.

I have a saab for sale, I went a different route

 

Not installed yet.....but it will be in the next 1-2 weeks. I have a 14 row starion completely sandblasted (best thing to do to an intercooler because it turns it into a huge heatsink basically) with custom tig welded 2 inch in/outlet.

I will be setting the radiator back and lowering it. Using 2 inch piping on the hotside and 2.5 inch piping on the coldside. I will post picks as soon as it is finished.

 

NPR intercooler out of a turbo Isuzu work truck is one of the best on the market.

 

npr is my setup, but use the small one , it's really big....

 

NPR is a good cooler, it's a bit large however. As stated above, the supra, although sidemount, is also a good one.

Sounds good, but why not weld 2.5" outlet? Esp. on the coldside.

 

End tanks on the starion are too small to fit 2.5" stubs (take a look at the pics and you be the judge.....2" stubs are already pretty close to the edges of the end tanks), and I do not think it is a restriction anyways (at my planned power levels).

I had the 2" stubs welded on to make it easier to source couplers, and simplify plumbing with less couplers/transitions (less $$$). Not too many places offer quality silicone in 1.75".

NPR intercooler is another option, but packaging is too tight on a miata (in my opinion......others will tell you differently).
