Hi Yall
This is Take 2!

I Just Bought me a brand spanking new 2014 Mx5(first new car in 8 years ) and Im thinking of boosting it.
Thought Id Post here since this is the "Turbo" forum afterall, any expert advise would be much appreciated fellas.
So my budget is pretty much 8k,
Im thinking that's a good start for a turbo kit and a mild suspension upgrade.(maybe konis and FM spring) read good stuff about this combo

Ive also read good reviews of The Special Force Kit that TDR has on their website. Did some reading on Miata.net as well, all seems positive.

So any advice before I pull the trigger?
Any short comings that are not apparent to amateurs on this kit?

Btw Id do lots of track driving, So reliability is a must.

And please no supercharger advise, I want a turbo. Period

I have no personal experience with TDR or NC miatas so I can only tell you what I have read so take it with a grain of salt. The current iteration of the TDR kits appears to be of decent/good quality from a hardware perspective. However, TDR has caught a lot of **** on this forum regarding the tuning performed on turbo kits which is outlined pretty thoroughly in the other thread you originally posted in. I have heard raving customer reviews and I have also heard some horror stories. I would be cautious with a large purchase like that attached to an NC which is relatively expensive in relation to the NA/NB miatas that most people on this site have. At the very least I would make sure I was monitoring my AFRs all the way through boost and probably verifying the absence of knock personally with a set of det cans before I was comfortable with a tune from TDR.

The only other turbo game in town for the NC is BEGI and I would personally be much more comfortable dealing with them than TDR and would probably go that route. BEGI has its own set of issues but that has more to do with customer service and the time it takes to receive your full order. The actual quality of their products and services is generally top notch. Corky is incredibly knowledgeable and is very respected on this forum.

This is a track-oriented forum full of engineers, fabricators, and DIY guys who don't sugarcoat things and always value data over conjecture. You will find legitimate discussion about the facts intermixed with lighthearted jabs and off-topic discussions.

Good-Win Racing has done some parts development on the NC Miata chassis in a track environment and has some track related components for sale on their site.

My first question for you, have you had any experience modifying cars in the past?

If the answer is yes, great. You can probably handle all the drama that comes with such a big modification.

If the answer is no, than I would start off with basic mods that will make your car perform a bit better on the track but keep the car at a lower power level. Also, living with a highly modified car is not for everyone. Inexperience and bad decisions go hand in hand. Stick with those people that have been there a few times to learn what is the best way to go for the planned use of your car.

 

So I did a search on this forum, and didn't turn up much, but I'm trying to find someone who has done the BEGI turbo kit for the NC. Anyone on here done it?

^Yep. He hangs out on MX5Atlanta.com if anywhere at all. Sometimes you can coax him to show up here but he doesn't do forums much.

 

Sweeeeeeet. Guess I'll be somewhat on my own if I don't want to go the supercharger route.

 

But you will be better. And we would be likely to help you and want to follow your progress closely because many of us will have NCs one day.

What ever you do, don't get anything from BEGi that requires welding. Unless you have 6 months built into your build schedule for them to get the welding done. The parts will be beautiful when the arrive... it will just take forever for them to hire and train a welder, have him quite, hire another one, have him quite, then hire the first guy back as a contractor to make the part... if you are lucky.

I don't blame Corky for his back injury, I have back problems myself... but I can't understand why welders won't work for them long term.
