Shanghai-S Turbo System

I recently put a deposit for a Shanghai-S Turbo System, im now waiting for it to get delivered. I replaced fuel filter, plugs, wires, the car is up to date on all the maintenance. Is there anything else i need to change the care has 146k on it? I have new ACT clutch as well i'm waiting to see if the stock clutch will go before i replace i'm guessing will be soon. Does anyone run open wastegate dump?

flounder 07-02-2010 11:22 PM

You probably won't see it until mid august and then it will be missing pieces.

What kind of fuel management you got? Oh, and start running the good gas now.

ModZZilla 07-02-2010 11:25 PM

open waste dump

I do, but it's loud and the fumes find their way to the cab. Check your compression and leak down while your waiting. Thats a lot of miles.

Cryswht93N/A 07-03-2010 03:22 AM

Mid August?! He told me 2-4 weeks

From pretty much EVERYTHING I have seen, you can at least multiply that very optimistic estimate by 3 or 4 times as much. Mid August is only 5-6 weeks away, I say more like September-ish, maybe October. At least prepare yourself for 8 weeks, just to not get your hopes up.

I'd suggest buying megasquirt or AEM and tune it on a stockish car before turbo. Probably one of the best things you can do.

It took them a little while, but the wait was worth it. They were more than helpful when I failed to mention i had a 99 block. They gave me new parts at no charge for my mistake. I would get a megasquirt if it is in your budget. When i ordered mine, i just got the megasquirt instead of the fpr, and it was only like 579 more. You might try to find a used ic kit or piece one together too while your waiting.

Fireindc 07-03-2010 05:41 PM

Honestly if the motor runs good, I wouldn't worry about the 146k miles on it.

Otoh if you want that motor to last very long, get MS.

Cryswht93N/A 07-03-2010 05:54 PM

The motor runs strong has good compression across the board, and consumes no oil. I think it should be fine, i have a ms1 for em, i only plan to run 8 psi for now haha. I was thinking of fabing a ebay i/c set up in the mean time....

Water pump and timing belt. Unless you're sure that was done already

I did that before i turboe'ed mine, even though my timing belt was 120k old.

I hope so, i'm still waiting for some parts (actuator and a bracket) and I ordered in early may. I was able to get everything else done, now i'm just waiting to slap on that actuator and make some hp. So for now, my baby sits......

chicksdigmiatas 07-04-2010 04:13 AM

It was easier since i was local too.

You can still drive the car out of boost. It will operate in a normal manner, just no boost. I am sorry the actuator is not here. It was ordered the 1st of June. I am still waiting. Had I known that the actuator would be on back order this long, I would have ordered it sooner. However, I had no way of predicting this. Normally ATP stocks these actuators and it has never been a problem before. Again, I apologize for the delay. I have been harassing ATP daily for news. When I know something, I will be in touch.

The deposit for your system ran on 5/17/10. You system shipped on 6/14/10, wrong tubes for bypass valve not withstanding (which were shipped to you the following week). Explain to me where you ordered in early may and have been waiting forever and a day?

The OP orders his system the end of June and you suggest the middle of August. Based on your 4 week lead time? And non standard parts? Call me crazy, but I just don't see the connection here.

I've been running the shanghai s on my 92 for about a year now, and I highly recommend ditching the fmu for ms or any standalone ecu. Also, you won't need to change the clutch until you go above 5-6 psi.

Good luck

Cryswht93N/A 07-08-2010 06:41 PM

Im doign a 60k service on my care before i install the turbo kit, also on ACT pp and a exedy disk to install as well. Im getting excited to finally boost this thing!!!!

Stephanie Turner 07-09-2010 04:17 PM

I don't know if a fuel filter is a part of that list. But if not, you might want to do it too. :)

Tekel 07-10-2010 10:22 PM

Once you get it installed post a quick review. I am looking at the shanghai kit with IC

1slowna 07-12-2010 04:27 AM

i would stick some cold plugs in there for sure. and as previously mentioned start putting 93 in it. or 91 if thats best you can get.

davidnino111 07-16-2010 08:03 PM

That is the general opinion. Just about every thread confirms this.

But hey: its good parts from a well known company, so if you're not in a rush then you're set. Just plan ahead and DEFINITELY expect delays;)

davidnino111 07-16-2010 08:39 PM

Yeah that's what I've heard that there good kits and the only ones really in my price range, cus I definitely can't afford an fm kit. Yeah and I'm also undecided whether I should turbo or just do the 1.8 swap cus I'd still be alittle worried with putting a begi on a motor with 193k miles and a valve that I can hear going bad.

18psi 07-16-2010 09:57 PM

Do both:)

davidnino111 07-16-2010 10:27 PM

With 1400$? Haha or let me go get money of my tree. But yeah I know bell charges 100 shipping fee but does anybody of the charge tax? I know some websites don't if it's out of state but does anybody know specifically about bell?

redfred18t 07-17-2010 01:30 AM

spending 13 seconds on their site, they're from TX, so unless you're from TX, you will not be charged sales tax (I dont even know if TX has a sales tax)

davidnino111 07-17-2010 02:55 AM

Yeah but some sites still charge you tax, and I wanted to know if this happened to anyone in past experiences. May sound stupid but that's happened to me before :/

Cryswht93N/A 07-18-2010 11:44 PM

Can you run bigger injectors meaning 1.8l or supra green top 315 with the begi fmu? or will it run way to rich?

lordrigamus 07-18-2010 11:54 PM

Did you get the link I PMed you about the injectors?

Cryswht93N/A 07-19-2010 12:49 AM

yea i did do you gve 1.8L injectors?

lordrigamus 07-19-2010 12:57 AM

No, I don't, sorry. I used to, but I have no idea what happened to them. Some one else probably does though. Check the for sale threads.

halveb 07-19-2010 11:20 AM

"Yeah but some sites still charge you tax, and I wanted to know if this happened to anyone in past experiences. May sound stupid but that's happened to me before :/"

The reason some vendors charge sales tax to out of state purchasers is because they are incorporated in the state where the purchaser is from and by law they have to. Examples of this are large corporations like Microsoft or Dell which are often incorporated in many states in order to have repair facilities or outlet stores.

I think you would be safe from sales tax with BEGI...but then again I can't say for sure.

I only have to charge sales tax if you are a resident of Texas. Texas does not require we collect taxes on out of state sales. Nor do we have locations in other states to worry about. :)

I stand by Begi. Every part i've purchased from, i receive a tracking number within few days of ordering. Its clearly not their fault if something is on back order nationally. Theres no reason to be bitching at the wrong people here especially when they are doing everything they can to make it right. As far as plugs go what did u go with? 1 step cooler are recommended.

Cryswht93N/A 09-13-2010 06:45 AM

Yes i went one step colder with the plugs. Begi is a great company i have no complaints at all with there service or customer service.
