2017 tire updates for the 200TW crew

This just popped up online: Tire Tech /// 2017 Street Tire Overview ? tracktuned

Rival S in 245/40-15 :likecat: I ran the v720 last year and barely sqeaked into 3rd in a regional series. These are top on my list unless RE71r is ever made in anything wider than a 205.

A new Federal model that might be good for the poverty choice.

Anybody else seen anything about 200TW tires yet? Post up so we can keep track of this stuff if so!

This year gon be gud

The Yokos are a little spendy, and they're 180 tread wear, but they're allowed the Lucky Dog leauge I've raced in. Amazing dry and wet grip.

Yokohama ADVAN Neova AD08 R

The ad08r is 3 - 4 years old. It's never really been a player and is often priced above the other options. I'm sure it's not garbage but don't see a reason specifically buy.

psyber_0ptix 12-27-2016 03:41 PM

Hmm....I have interest in the Rival S

Old news.
The cool kids already started a 275 street tire thread :giggle:

:dunno:

Rival S in 245 and possible RS4 in 245 is newish news. Good things happening. Big thanks to Maxxis (and 949) for jump starting this market.

I really don't understand why they were never popular in the miata community. I don't think I'd even heard of them until earlier this year when someone told me I should run them in a WRL race. I bought a set to test and was very impressed. We didn't get to do back-to-back testing with the RE71R because the guy that was bringing them didn't show up that weekend, but the AD08R was less than a second slower (on a 2:25 course) than the times that we'd previously been seeing out of RE71R and Rival-S, and it barely showed any wear by the end of the weekend. I'm excited to try them some more next year. Looks like it might be a perfect WRL/track day tire.

$$$
Miata owners are cheap bastards.

They've been ~$130+ in an era where the old Rival was the first Max Summer tire I ever paid more than $100 for. Old RT615, XS, Z1, Z1* were all ~<$100

They're still $36/tire more than RE71R.

jpreston 12-28-2016 01:10 PM

True, but I think the lap time vs. wear rate might justify the cost.

Thanks for sharing that post, was a nice summary of the recent discussion in our other tire threads

We have had really good results with them last year in Chumpcar. The tire has equivalent performance/times to RS3/Rivals and lasted much longer. I think its a bit more tread over all, but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them if you are willing to spend a bit more and need more life before you kill your tires. We are pretty good on tires over all, so we haven't needed them, but if we couldn't make a race on one set of tires (and didn't want to do a mid-race swap), I wouldn't hesitate to drop the money on them.

matthewdesigns 12-29-2016 12:15 PM

Yeah yeah, I've read the other tire threads a million times, just wanted a concise place for anything new in this category :-)

@Curly The AD08 I don't see in anything wider than a 205 in a 15" diameter...am I missing something there?

@18psi a 10" wheel would be swell, but I'm not ready to start cutting up my car for this lol. If I can get a 245 on a 9" wheel (I know, faster on a 10") under my flat rolled/lightly pulled NA fender that's what I'm doing.

Also I guess the new rules in my series allow for a 140TW. Aside from the AD08 at 180, I don't recall seeing anything else in a 225-245 15" unless I go to 100TW (R888, NT01, etc).

curly 12-29-2016 12:49 PM

Sorry, missed that part of your original post. And as others have said, the AD08 shines in enduro racing and/or rain. Doesn't really apply if you want 225-245 dry autox times.

90civichhb 12-30-2016 11:22 AM

I ran the 225/15 Rival S on an 9" wheel this year and really like the tire for autocross. I would love to try a 245 and see how it does. Looking forward to tests on the new competition. The Federal is always great to be able to use when on a budget, great performance for the money, atleast with the old 140tw stuff.

Der_Idiot 12-30-2016 11:49 AM

I too will possibly try the Rivals in 245 barring any complaints when my 245 VR1s are finished next summer. Interested to see how they compete with the 275 VR1s.

Hankook RS4 in 245/40-15

The RS3 were not quite as fast as the Rival S and RE71r as we all know from the Hierarchy thread. Maybe these will bring a little something extra.

Mid march delivery btw.

matthewdesigns 12-30-2016 10:56 PM

Thanks for that. I just saw that the old RS4 thread had been resuscitated and has some good info. Glad to see Andy Hollis chiming in about things there.
