NASA Thunderhill PTC May 19, 2012

Qualifying for Saturday PTC race, me driving. 2:01.5 or so.

We won TTC (time trial) with 11 other cars in class both days. No other competitors in PTC (sprint race). Leading E1 enduro with healthy margin with team driver Gordon Jennings behind the wheel when throttle shaft broke. It was a prepped, epoxied shaft which we have never had problems with. We have never run a motor in sprint races at 8500 rpm though and I think that's what did it. It doesn't make any useful power up there though so we'll bring the limiter down to 7800 and prep another TB.

Dam I broke a throttle shaft this weekend as well, my rev limit is set to 7400.

Maybe you need to beat Goodwin with that bolt in TB, they were talking about last year or so, to the market.

A few pics form the NASA 3hr enduro at Buttonwillow last weekend. Won TTC and PTC both days as well. Team driver Theo Coetzee did the entire 3hr enduro himself, "Ironman" style and won E1, finishing 4th overall.

In car video from Sunday's PTC race, first few laps. I got a gap and the second half of the race I eased off and went into cruise mode.

I notice the wing appears to be at a positive angle of incidence?

Tore the 4" splitter off in Friday practice. Trimmed the wing back one notch to keep it tight-ish for enduro then another notch down for sprint race to keep it free. It was still tight in the sprint race without the splitter.

Helps driver to keep from being blinded by lights of cars behind. The stills are of Theo in the enduro. 7:10pm - 11:10pm so roughly 2hrs at night.

that rx8 must be really annoying to drive that long...i had to turn my volume down until he was passed.

mx5-kiwi 06-26-2012 04:52 PM

I know you did, so you obviously "could" beat the rx8 but "should" you be able to beat an rx8?

1800cc N/aspirated versus 13b or whatever they are these days...?

Great videos, Nice driving!

You mean those awesome window slits from the 80's actually had a purpose? They were all born to do night races.

Dunno yet. The thing won't need any help to get a WRC powerband. I could run a bone stock engine with just rods and pistons and meet my modest (for this blower) power goals. If I make it breathe too well with cams, porting and such nonsense, I'll just lower the pressure ratio required to draw a Kansas relief map on the dyno and maybe fall off the bottom of the borgsters map.

I'd like to do a few RLTA and GTA's. The SoCal guys are heavily pressuring Chris to revamp the Mod rules in RLTA to allow actual race cars and maybe create lbs/hp tiers (crazy idea!). If that happens, a bunch of active W2W guys would stand a chance at a podium spot. That could be some good fun. As it is, we get lumped in with 2400#, 600whp running full slicks and goofy Pike Peak style aero. IOW, we get stomped even though our cars will actually run all day without much more than gas and few drops of oil during the lunch break.

Anyway, with a series/class to run uncorked it would be fun to run E85, pull the ballast out, mounts slicks and see what it will do a few laps at a time.

Guess, probably 10.0:1. Even with race gas, I think I can build a torque to weight ratio equal to that of the Z06's. I get a slight lbs/hp penalty for being so light so they'll still pull me on the top end but that should only matter at ACS. I may make up for it by being able to do 1-2 flat where I don't think they'll be able to. Who knows? We'll build it, race it a bit and see how bad an idea it is.

I'm sure Andrew is scheming how to choke Theseus down enough to run in ST2 with us :brain:

Our Chumpcar is Patch. Sprinkles, wish I had thought of it. We have a salvage yard sourced NB here that pees all over everything. If it doesn't get cleaned up and flipped, it'll be a race car. Maybe I can license the name from you for a specified qty of malted beverages per annum.

We ran Performance Touring ,"PT" the last few years. In PT we have lbs/hp tiers from 10.0:1 to 16.5:1. Points assessed for every modification, 19 pt cap before you get bumped to the next class.

ST2 is "Super Touring", between the new for 2013 ST3 and existing ST1. We're allowed 8.0 lbs/hp to start with a few correction factors for things like dog boxes, slicks vs DOT tires, FWD, AWD, 4 dr Sedan, etc. No points are assessed for mods so it's pretty wide open. We can run any aero we want but a fastback gets a weight penalty (which I think is a bad rule). We can't modify the tub to much but we can go crazy with the cage to the point of nearly making it a tube frame car. Crusher will get a heavily revised cage structure. Beside gaining much need stiffness ahead of the firewall, it'll be seeing 150+mph a lot.

Da Rules
nasaforums.com • View topic - 2013 ST/SU Rules and Forms are posted--12-24-12

We'll add a Borg EFR 6258 running modest boost, making maybe 260whp in a vast, flat dyno plot. Aero like no one has ever seen on a Miata, and probably DOT tires. We may or may not race on the R80/R100's. We'll have to do some more tire testing and see what our options are.

Scrappy Jack 12-28-2012 12:45 PM

This may be the most exciting Miata news I've ever read. Looking forward to the progress and updates.

I still think the NB will be competitive in C. We managed to remove some aero after Ohio and make the car even faster with only 16 pts for T25. The splitter is worth another .7s or so. No doubt in my mind that I could go back to Ohio and run low 1:34's.

So yeah, I'd like to see someone carry the C torch at Miller this year. We'll have cars there in E,D and ST2.

Meanwhile, another pic of the dirtiest orange Miata in lake Forest. Combined T25 grime plus a day of tire testing in the rain. He's a crusty little fellow.

Incredibly excited to see the development of the car into ST2! It's like PTC was some really cool concepts shoehorned into the strict ruleset but ST2 will allow your imagination to run wild. Can't wait to see what comes of it.

With the move to making Crusher an even faster miata, does this pretty much fill the shoes that the OGK once did, or do you still hope to some day bring the OGK back?

Keep it up!

Crusher pretty much fills the role of the Orange Giant Killer. I guess the difference is Crusher was built with a lot more finesse and budget. The OGK was cheap, crude and fast. The OGK name stands for something though so I'll bring it back at some point. In a way though, Crusher will be the giant killer going up against unlimiteds in USTCC, Z06's in ST2, etc.

OGK rules then. That's kind of where I am now. I once had cash but I'm now in abject poverty so I'm going to go faster than everyone in my class and do it with no money.

Probably not. Its a sprint car. No T25

GeneSplicer 12-29-2012 10:13 AM

Will be anxious to see what your doing since ST2 is the direction I'm headed with mine. Sucks on the fast back, really was debating dropping the coin until Andrew clued me in. So, no mods to the OE roof line - I'm assuming that included anything small such as vortex generators too.

So, I'll buy the all the miata shit I can (in honor of abject poverty stricten Hustler), then re-sell it when it doens't work and copy your setup after you destroy all vettes and GT3s in class.
