downforce from original spoiler or wing?
were there any spoilers or wings fitted as standard, as factory option or have homologation that create downforce? in the championship i race in i am not allowed anything else. i could probably get away with something that didn't look too crazy but no point in putting something on that wont work. ideas?

R-package front lip is probably worth something if you have an NA. :dunno:
|
Yea it's an Na. We already have 1 and a front splitter as that is allowed. Could just do with some rear downforce to balance things out.
|
IIRC in order to make downforce on our cars in the rear you have to have a fairly tall rear wing, nothing OEM fits the bill. 949 racing has some examples of rear spoilers that make downforce. I guess downforce made under the car like in F1 isn't OEM either...
|
What about a spoiler rather than a wing? Nothing in the rules saying I can't use a rear diffuser but that's a whole other subject that I am already looking into. For now I want to concentrate on the top of the car until I can develop a decent flat bottom to work with a diffuser.

The issue is getting something into the air, i don' think a spoiler is tall enough to do that.
For reference, read this thread. Same question. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1324263759 As you can see in the picture, anything shy of a wing doesn't get high enough to make a deference, I know its an NC in the pic, but an NA should be similar. Do you race with a hard top on? It might have some effect with a hard top on, idk though thats just speculation. |
If you are allowed a flat bottom and diffuser I would focus on that. You will end up with more downforce and less drag than would be possible with just a rear wing.
|
Yea we run with a hardtop but I think your probably correct. The angles are too big to keep the air attached properly. although in that picture you can see where the air leaves the boot. i wonder if there was a hardtop fitted and a spoiler it could create a high pressure area. also i have read somewhere about putting holes in the rear hardtop window or removing it completely too help keep the air attached. Are there any examples like that with a hard top fitted?

found same pic but with roof up and hardtop

Great pics! Interesting to see such a difference between the hardtop and softtop.
|
looking at those pictures i think a spoiler will work with a hard top. that is assuming the flow is similar on the NA with hardtop to the NC with hardtop. wonder which would work best??

If only there were another roadster that came with an airfoil like the ones 949 sells.

A mammoth spoiler like the ones used in CSP might shift the aero balance somewhat. But you will sacrifice top speed.
Stable air is vital for optimal working aerofoils, flaps (e.g old generation nascar etc) and other "band-ainds" might have effect with turbulent air. Testing is knowing :) |
was hoping someone somewhere was going to tell me about a homologated wing used somewhere that i could just strap on and be on my way or at least find something that is similar.
think i will have to get a few different standard spoilers and give them a try at the track. we have a big rear wing but not allowed to use it. |
I'd bring this up in the other thread. I know Hustler races and a few other guys do too, they may have a better answer for you.
|
A spoiler, unlike an airfoil, doesn't need clean stable air. I'd bet that even the stock R-package spoiler would help reduce lift and a lessen drag by a small amount.
But reducing lift is a long cry away from producing down-force.. |

how about this? i know its not standard but i think i could get away with it.

You have a duck bill trunk? Great, now I have to sell my new one...

I also have a couple of bowties. Sell me your car? :)

I'll just leave this here...
And for the record, this guy is for the most part the most knowledgeable on RX7club.com when it comes to suspension and aero set up.

AERO is HUGE above 55 mph and goes up at a cube rate. it doesn't take much to upset the delicate longitudinal balance. AERO STORY: Runoffs at Road Atlanta. my RX3SP gridded 4th after the first of two qualifying sessions. i asked my engine guy Daryl Drummond what he would think about removing the tiny little rear (OEM) spoiler pop riveted on my rear deck. Daryl asked me what rpm in top gear i was running at the bottom of the hill. i said 10,000. he figured i'd pick up another 300 rpm. the engine was drysumped and running 12 quarts of oil. Daryl figured it would be 50/50 the motor would live as it was already cranking big time down the long back straight. since we had another engine in the truck we removed the rear spoiler. the spoiler didn't weigh more than 2 pounds! out i went and did run 10,300 at the bottom of the hill BUT i could not hold the car at the very very slight, almost imperceptible bend leading to the hill. the tiny spoiler at about 140 was glueing the back end to the track. on the other side of the track, down and up the hill thru the esses, the car was major loose and this was all 3rd gear! after the session we pop riveted the spoiler back on. it was tiny. it was out of the major air stream and it was essential. i have huge respect for aero. that does not mean i am for spoilers. it is really easy to add too much drag or unbalance the car. i run the R1 splitter and no spoiler. the car is perfect in turn one at Brainerd at 165. since you will have around 500 rwhp you probably have enough excess rwhp to use Aero. i suggest you lose the 16KG rear springs and substitute 13 or 14. start at 2 pounds lower air pressure in the rear. then tune your aero. and do bring a pyrometer to the track. good luck, howard |

hmm that post from the rx7 forum is very interesting. i think there is only going to be one way to find out and that's to just get a few different ones and do some testing. there has to be some gain.
