Goodwin Racing NC going to Superlap Battle USA COTA 2020

Official announcement :)

Project "Budget NC" Phase TWO!

This past year we bought a junkyard NC and have been building a road map to show how you can build a quick and fun NC for a very reasonable amount that will embarrass exotic cars in the twisty bits and at autocross. We've also taken this car to the track and turned respectable times but on the big track it's clear that it's an "all the grip" car that would be happy to use more power if we had it.

For stage 2 we want to step the car's track capability up a couple notches and see if we can embarrass some exotics on the race track as well. A baseline at a local track with the car as it is now is due first so we'll get that done just after the holidays, and then we'll take you guys along as we add some power, some aero, and some additional track-focused mods to take this car to that next level.

And hmmm we should probably have a big event to take it to, don't you think? Superlap Battle USA at Circuit of the Americas is right around the corner, Feb 15-16. Our HyperMiata isn't going to be able to make it this year as we have several more big changes to get done and tested and not enough time to get that all done... so let's pass the torch to the NC! This car is already set up to run a 255/40/17 on our 17x10s - which the street class spec tire, the Yokohama A052 comes in, and with a full interior it seems a great candidate for a street class contender.

When it's all done we can take the car back to our local track for an apples to apples comparison to see where we are after all the changes. This is going to be fun!

What ECU?

Is that the CameronSport rollbar or some other?

z31maniac 12-19-2019 10:42 AM

Any reason for the 5 spd over a 6 spd? Price? Availability?

ThePass 12-19-2019 01:02 PM

That's how the car sits now. Lots of changes coming.

ECU is factory. They're tunable via EcuTek and similar. The turbo kit on the way comes with a tune, we'll see how it works and do some further tuning if necessary.
The roll bar is an old AWR unit that we happened to have lying around. With the speeds at COTA we naturally want a hardtop so DG Motorsports is making one for us now and because that current bar's rear legs go to the hardtop's rear mounting points on the body, it won't fit under a hardtop so we'll need to change roll bars. Plans for this coming month:

5 speed is cheaper, handles a standard 2.5L great and we actually prefer the ratios of the 5 in most cases. We're changing to a 6 speed with the increase in power. Walter Motorsports has put together a blueprinted/polished 6 speed for us in anticipation of the incoming turbo, and a new diff is also being built with a 3.63 to better suit the 6 speed's ratios.

Ryan, FYI you may want to update your NC roll bar offerings to reflect this: Hard dog makes an NC "hard core" bar that is ~1/2 the cost of the BBFW. You may want to have them make one for this car as it fits the budget motif (as I just did) and add it to your site!

They have had the jig for at least 4 years...

Vteckiller2000 is Cameronsport I was referring to. His Hard Dog bar is muy bueno and priced similarly to other normal Miata roll bars. I'm not sure if there is a non-disclosure agreement.

Thanks guys. As part of a safety update to make the car fit for TA competition we have a Blackbird Fabworx NC RZ bar being built right now in BFW signature blue, as well as a Sparco going in with PCI seat mounts, a a BFW fire extinguisher bracket and a 6 point harness and Halotron extinguisher donated by Hyper.

Does the Hard Dog bar pass the required safety regs?

Don't know. We're putting a BFW bar in it. In BFW's sexy signature blue. It's going to be great.

ThePass 12-20-2019 05:41 PM

Sparco Evo II US that we had sitting around from one of our other projects is a perfect fit for this car, on PCI seat mount with a Sparco 6 point harness donated by Hyper:

https://photos.smugmug.com/GWR-Budge...IMG_1943-L.jpg

ThePass 12-23-2019 02:56 PM

Had some folks asking about heights and weights of the seat vs stock:

The factory seat in our 2006 is a featherweight as factory seats go at 29.50 lbs. That's base package cloth seat.

https://www.mazdatalkforum.com/downl...hp?id=6856&t=1

Sparco Evo II US (which is not the smallest of aftermarket seats) is 19.1 lbs and the PCI bracket is 10 lbs. So we end up with a net zero weight gain for a safer setup that sits us lower and holds us in place far better. If this car was a GT with leather seats, we'd be cutting weight too.

https://www.mazdatalkforum.com/downl...hp?id=6857&t=1

It should be noted that Sparco's current crop of QRT seats are about 5 lbs lighter than this older model, so you could even come in lower.

And a good comparison of headroom between the two. Dropped a significant amount:

Talking with Stoptech and I can confirm we’re going to go with their C43 BBK so we can have complete confidence with turbo power at the end of the long straights at COTA. Will hammer out the specifics like pads etc once we are all back in the office after the holidays.

Chilicharger665 12-25-2019 05:16 AM

I cannot wait to see this car in February! I have the weekend off and everything!

Arca_ex 12-25-2019 07:20 AM

Definitely sad that the HyperMiata won't make the trip but this project is awesome as well. I'd like to build one of these up as a wheel to wheel car sometime off in the future.

I'll see you there.

Lots of changes coming fast in this space in January. Speaking with Fab9 about turbo, fuel, etc. and getting the details hammered out. We should see a kit here some time next week.

Lots to do between now and then but when we get to that point will definitely post what garage we're in and hope anyone who can make it out to COTA comes by!

I'll be there again, and will for sure come visit. I'll try not to interrupt a meal this time

ThePass 12-30-2019 06:01 PM

Fab9 turbo kit is en route to us. Liking the cast manifold. While this is Fab9's "budget" oriented kit, we opted for a GTX30R, which is certainly little less "budgety" but the GTX housing is what was available in the timeframe we needed it. Folks following along should be able to hit same power numbers we see with a GT30R, the spool will just be slightly better on ours.

Sexy! That is the simplest looking turbo kit I have ever seen. I can't wait to see it in the car. Are you keeping your RS exhaust on there or replacing with something 3"?

The downpipe is designed to bolt right up to our RoadsterSport exhaust options, which are all 2.5". We'll be using our catless double-resonated midpipe for dyno and track testing.

One thing we know we need to address is that the factory fuel pump fixture doubles as a surge tank of sorts, with a walled off chamber surrounding the pump to keep sloshing in the tank from affecting the fuel pickup. The trouble is, above about 300whp, in certain track situations you can actually drain that small 'bucket' faster than the small factory returnless style system can refill it, and you end up starving the pump. To fix this, we need to change to a return style setup that can refill the bucket faster.

Fab9 has parts to accomplish this, but then we realized we actually had the parts to do this laying around here, supplied a while back from Dynotronics for our supercharged NC, but never installed because we found it wouldn't clear the supercharger. Kit includes a modified fuel rail, adjustable pressure regulator, return lines to go from the engine back to the tank, and a modified tank fixture with an AN bulkhead fitting and pre-fabbed hard line inside:

https://www.mazdatalkforum.com/downl...hp?id=6884&t=1

https://www.mazdatalkforum.com/downl...hp?id=6885&t=1

We'll get into installing this and see if we need anything else once we're in there.

ThePass 01-02-2020 11:40 AM

Parts and wrenches are beginning to fly through the air ;) Removing stuff for the impending install; bumper, brakes, header, fuel system, old roll bar, differential...

RalliartRsX 01-02-2020 03:53 PM

Man, I am loving this! I have a sweet spot for a NC considering I am over 6'3 :)

Is that budget kit available through Fab9?? I am not seeing it on their site

ThePass 01-02-2020 04:11 PM

New kit, they don't have it listed online yet. Ours is the very first one - test fit on their own car and then immediately removed and shipped to us so we would have it in time, before they've even finished writing instructions or developing a tune to package with the kit yet. They're projecting MSRP right around $4k, depending on which turbo you opt for, etc.

ThePass 01-03-2020 02:27 PM

RX8 front hubs. Easy bolt-in option for heavier duty hub that can handle extended track abuse.

Street class allows a singe element wing, 5" splitter and up to 4 canards. Doing a collab with Blackbird Fabworx to put together what we want for this car. I have a Kognition airfoil that was retired from duty on Hyper a few years ago, that's about the most effective single element out there so will do a set of stands for that, as well as fab up a class legal splitter, probably that rests against the bottom of the current lip spoiler on there. I'm not in a hurry to add canards, but will probably do some other details focused on improving drag/DF.

ThePass 01-04-2020 02:34 PM

We've ran our 300whp supercharged 2007 on 18x10.5 for years on stock rear components, the only upgrade being an OSG. But as power and grip continue to rise, we hear from a few out there doing over 400hp at the track that around there several other rear bits become weak points in the system.

There's some internet lore suggesting that you can update to the larger RX8 rear hub/bearing by swapping to RX8 spindles and scavenging parts of an automatic RX8's axles. We picked up a set of spindles/hubs/axles from an '05 auto RX8, will be putting fresh bearings in these and then work through the conversion and see if it's possible.

Nice! IIRC, Street class doesn't allow front splitter diffusers/ramps, correct?

Honest question, what makes the Kognition foil the most effective single element? The data I've been able to find on it puts it at around 12:1 LDR?

No restriction on splitter in terms of diffusers or ramps, just can't extend past that 5" dimension beyond the bumper. We may keep it relatively simple depending on how much time we have to work with. First up is all the drivetrain and chassis updates. Aero will be later in January once the car is back up and running and we know all that stuff is operating right.
Re: Kognition, It's a high camber profile, one of the most aggressive single elements out there that still maintains flow attachment, so it will make the most DF possible for a given chord length and AoA.

Awesome, that's the most concrete thing I've seen on the swap. Looks like we shouldn't run into any issues.

Worked through the RX8 Rear Hub/Bearing/Spindle conversion today. Our donor parts came from a 2005 Automatic RX8.

RX8 Spindle (Left) and NC spindle (Right).

https://photos.smugmug.com/GWR-Budge...IMG_2083-L.jpg

RX8 Bearing (Left) and NC bearing (Right). Both are 80mm OD, but the RX8 bearing is 5mm longer, with larger ID for the larger axles (45mm vs 42mm):

https://photos.smugmug.com/GWR-Budge...IMG_2084-L.jpg

RX8 axle stub, 31 splines (Left) and NC axle stub, 28 splines (Right):

https://photos.smugmug.com/GWR-Budge...IMG_2082-L.jpg

RX8 hub (Top) and NC hub (Bottom). Tried to take this picture a couple different ways, it's kind of hard to tell in the photo but the radius between the hub flange and the shaft is much thicker on the RX8 unit i.e. stronger:

https://photos.smugmug.com/GWR-Budge...MG_2087-XL.jpg

RX8 spindles with fresh bearings pressed in and our ARP extended studs swapped over from the previous NC hubs, ready to go in the car:

https://photos.smugmug.com/GWR-Budge...IMG_2093-L.jpg

The NC axles won't work with the RX8 hubs. The trick is to remove the outer CV joints of the RX8 axles and swap them on to the NC axles. Straightforward process; remove the CV boot and then hammer the outer end off the axle shaft with a brass hammer. It will go all at once when it pops past the C clip. The RX8 end goes on the NC axle shaft the same way, just hammer it on. The boots on the NC axles work on the RX8 ends.

Removing the end:

https://photos.smugmug.com/GWR-Budge...IMG_2098-L.jpg

RX8 outer CV end (top) NC outer CV end (bottom):

https://photos.smugmug.com/GWR-Budge...IMG_2102-L.jpg

Finished NC/RX8 hybrid axles:

https://photos.smugmug.com/GWR-Budge...IMG_2104-L.jpg

And finally, we used the RX8 ABS sensors (left) instead of NC sensors (right):

https://photos.smugmug.com/GWR-Budge...IMG_2106-L.jpg

https://photos.smugmug.com/GWR-Budge...IMG_2107-L.jpg

Weights:

NC:
Hub + Bearing 5.25 lbs
Spindle 8.55 lbs
Axle CV end 3.65 lbs
Total 17.45 lbs

RX8:
Hub + Bearing 5.90 lbs
Spindle 9.40 lbs
Axle CV end 4.25 lbs
Total 19.55 lbs

Net weight gain just 2 lbs per side.

ThePass 01-06-2020 12:28 AM

Also installed our fresh differential today. 3.63 final drive to stretch the 6 speed's ratios out a bit, OSGiken LSD, assembled by the fine folks at Walter Motorsports with their upgraded race bearings, and topped off with SuperPro diff bushings:

Making progress! Here's where we left it last night. Things are coming together.

https://www.mazdatalkforum.com/downl...hp?id=6897&t=1

An update on turbo choice; for our power targets we know we want more than a 2860 can provide, so we discussed changing to a 30R, but during Fab9's test fit of the kit prior to sending to us they found that wouldn't fit so what we have here is a GT2871R. Garret rates this turbo for 280-475 HP on engines from 1.8L to 3.0L. With a 2.5L upwards of 300 whp, we should be right in the sweet spot with this turbo in terms of both spool and efficiency.

Oh4One4 01-08-2020 07:59 PM

Fab9 and Kraken working together to make a turbo kit or fab9 just buying a manifold from them?

sixshooter 01-09-2020 06:42 AM

Why not the newer technology G25-550 or G25-660? They have made huge strides on the turbine side of these new turbos.

https://www.garrettmotion.com/racing...eries-g25-660/

Chilicharger665 01-09-2020 02:20 PM

The team at SuperMiata are making sure every detail meets their high standards and then we'll be track testing them (can't wait for that) but trying to push them through to have on a car by a tight deadline isn't the right way to go about making a killer new product. So the answer right now is "unknown".

ThePass 01-17-2020 02:00 PM

We are up and running! Had to work through a few details to get everything happy and working together - as is the case with any major changes (MAP sensor was giving us issues and had to backtrack to a returnless fuel setup for now). Tuning with Mike at Xero Limit the last few days. Car is now up and running well on wastegate @ ~8psi with a conservative tune on pump gas. Already feels pretty quick. We swapped the hood over from our silver 2007 supercharged car for the hood venting goodness, and the Blackbird Fabworx NC RZ roll bar is now fully installed and providing some nice pop! Getting loaded up and hitting Willow Springs Raceway tomorrow :naughty:

I never thought I'd say this, but that's a really good looking NC

Cory M 01-17-2020 05:09 PM

Just saw it on the road today on I5 South. We were on the way to the taco shop and you flew past in the fast lane. Looks good in motion!

ThePass 01-22-2020 04:22 PM

Exciting times at Willow Springs! I only got some baseline laps in but the car was already ripping. WSIR is a fast track. Just on low boost and conservative pump gas tune at this point and already keeping up with a Porsche Cayman down the long front straight. Had a bunch of fun in those five laps catching some fancy hardware including a Corvette and several Porsches.

https://www.mazdatalkforum.com/downl...hp?id=6929&t=1

The fun was ended early by smoke and fire, but I was able to react fast to it. Everybody reading this has a fire extinguisher in their car, RIGHT? With quick reaction the damage was contained pretty well. The turbo had melted the plastic valve cover. It should be noted that our GT2871R turbo is larger than the 2860 intended for the kit, so it sits closer to the valve cover, and we had already done hours of street driving/tuning with no hints of this issue. I feel confident saying a street car wouldn't encounter this. Just goes to show what we already know - that there's nothing else like the abuse of track use. Everyone on this forum knows this well, but many don't. Melting stuff never looks pretty, but the good news is a turbo blanket will solve this issue easily. We've already spoken with the folks at PTP and got a blanket here. Going to replace the valve cover and a few of the hoses that got a bit crispy, get this blanket on, and get back out there for further testing.

https://www.mazdatalkforum.com/downl...hp?id=6930&t=1

It was a cool day but temperatures were rock solid, so it looks like we're on the right track with the oil cooler development. We've been trying a few different cooler cores and configurations, honing in on what we'll offer in the kit. More to come on that front after more testing.
