I changed the redline oil in my trans.
 

its been in the car for 4 track days and it is totally black. the oil that came out of the trans when I installed it was light golden.

how could it turn black so fast? think I'll send it to blackstone and see what they say about it. I replaced the redline with amsoil so hopefully it will behave a little nicer, going into reverse.

Probably because Redline is shitty fluid. Your Blackstone UOA will confirm this, just as my Blackstone UOAs confirmed it over a year ago.

Would Amsoil be the recommendation then? I'm running Redline currently, haven't had issues with it but would be open to switching.

The color of the oil doesn't really tell you much of anything.

However, RL sucks, AMSoil MTG is the way to go. Blackstone told me that two season of track time (~25-30 hours per season) didn't require a change and I should keep going. I had a slightly sticky synchro in 5th, the change seems to have fixed it. Savington and I sustain 300*f+ trans oil temps.

It holds viscosity better with temp for one...being the most important "one".

Purely out of curiousity... are we talking 5spds or 6spds here?

WHICH Redline fluid was it?

I just put Redline MTL (not the heavy duty ---- or whatever, my car is a street car) in my MSM, expecting the fluid to be so awesome i would have permanent jizz stains in my seat, by the way everyone on all the other miata forums were creaming themselves over it.

It didn't change at all. Reverse still sucks, still feels notchy as hell, and just... blah. (My shifter needs a full rebuild.)

Is Amsoil the one that i truly need to cover my seat in jizm?

I don't recall which Redline fluid it was for sure, pretty sure it was MTL 75-90. I just briefly drove the car and reverse seems worse. I need to check if the top of the shift turret is tight. I've read those bolts get a little loose so the aluminum cover moves and you cant shift. I Don't think this is my problem because all the gears shift fine but reverse is seriously not working.

Motorcraft xt-m5-QS is said to be the new hotness oil for the 6 speed but i'm skeptical that it will make a difference.

My transmission temperatures on the track came way down after installing heat shielding around my exhaust where it faces the transmission. From the factory Miatas have it, so I don't know why a car burning twice or three times as much fuel and making twice or three times the heat energy would neglect it. I also shielded my diff from the exhaust as well. It made a ~40*f difference in the trans and the diff.

FWIW I put the Motorcraft unicorn jizz in my 6spd and it has magically fixed my reverse and 1st to 2nd gear clunk when cold. I won't use anything else, ever.

I used RL in my trans for a few weeks and I loved the way it shifted. I am trying AMSoil MTG this next change to see if I can tell a difference, I'v heard a lot of good stuff about it.

I'm not use to trying different types of oils, I use T6 for my motor oil as you suggested and want to try the AMSoil, is this what you are referring to?

Amsoil mtg is good stuff. Running in 95 5 speed. It was smooth shifting even in winter.

Had redline in a 240sx and it was hard to shift when cold and notchy when hot.

Running from even with the front of the bellhousing to the end of the tailshaft? If so, I would be considering an auxiliary cooler of some sort to augment cooling capacity. I know my car isn't putting down the power yours is, but I would be more worried about trans temp with the loads you are subjecting it to. 300*F is pretty damn hot by anyone's standards.

Anyone have any experience with dog box transmissions and redline shock proof oils? I just put the trans back in, and was advised to run RL shock proof light.

I checked the tightness of shifter housing and it was good. so that is not causing my reverse problem. i guess I'm glad its reverse not a main gear but still annoying. might try bleeding it agian and perhaps try adjusting the throw of the clutch based on the the fact when I shift in to 1st the car moves ever so slightly so the clutch must still be slightly engaged. it barely moves, like 1/4 an inch but still not good.

Amsoil MTG is great. I don't have a clue what was in my tranny when I bought it but it had to be forced into 1rst and I couldn't shift into 3rd until the car had been driven several miles. Amsoil solved all the issues and it shifts great.

Ive heard some times it takes as much as a 100 miles for new oil to 'sink in" to the gears and but I dont think it will happen.

I'm psyched my 5th and 6th seem to work fine, when initially they were very difficult to get into. the new fluid and a new master helped with that. not sure the master was really needed but at least I know the parts are new.
