anyone used or had the need to use intercooler spray? just a thought. we race 20min sessions and i am wondering if by the end the cooler will be getting a bit heat soaked. doing a test day on wed so will have a look at the data logs to see what the IAT's are. the intercooler is pretty large and the ambient temps are pretty low. don't really see it being a problem but thought i would bring it up just for the crack.

Evo's also have the turbo and downpipe directly behind the radiator/intercooler. An inch or 2 away, so close that they couldn't even fit a fan in there and use 1 push 1 pull type fan.

Also me and a friend did numerous logs on his evo with and without the sprayer, and it did..........nothing

In theory the sprayer makes perfect sense. Not so much in application. At least that I've experienced. Unless of course you hose the whole intercooler with water...then maybe

In a miata it is completely a gimmick. On other cars in other situations it could possibly work.

It makes a difference in a subaru with the top mount ic. Those things heat soak like crazy, and we've sprayed water on them between runs and I saw some serious improvements in ait

If you want some serious charge cooling, just pick up a simple w/i kit and have it activate past a certain ait temp in boost. Your aits will plummet lol

Modify a supersoaker with a line to the manifold and a check valve so you can pressurize it with boost and then have a solenoid open when IAT hits a certain point, spraying the intercooler with high pressure water.



Or... water injection.

dont really want to put WI on the race car as its just something else to go wrong. keep it simple.

Well, if you are using it to cool the IC, and you need it on the track, and it fails, you still have an issue right? Plus WI is pretty durable if you keep it simple, like a single stage system with a Hobbs switch (NAPA). For a racing application you may not even need a check valve.

Personally I would use all of that same equipment for WI (post-IC) rather than an IC sprayer. Thermally it will be more effective.

I re-routed some hood mounted windshield washers into my bumper on the 240...used the windshield washer pump. Cant say it did much for sure, but it was pretty neat.

Buy bunch of air cans for keyboard cleaning.. before each run turn the can around and spray the IC.

as long as we are talking about things that don't work, I've thought about rerouting the AC coils to cool the intercooler. perhaps you could even use a heat exchanger pumped to a AC system. who knows,anyone tired it? gotta work better than washer sprayers. water injection is the way to go, had good luck in the past and I'm building a new system now that is pretty nice.

And trying to use the AC ... no. Just no. Remove the AC condenser to improve flow through your FMIC and radiator.

I think if I do find any issues in the log wi will be the way to go but use it as a safeguard only and not for any extra power. That way if it fails it won't blow up and everything should still be fine. Pretty heavy bit of kit to be lugging around though.

Used wi in a gt4 I had a few years back and had some good results but now and again it wouldn't work and needed to be bled. Maybe that system was just crap.

I made an intercooler sprayer for my wrx, and it definitely reduced heat soak between auto-x runs. I've never considered making one for my Miata for the reasons given above. It's hardly worth the effort, weight, and additional complexity on our cars.

Not sure if you were serious, but I was going to do this for drag racing. If you frost the whole intercooler it would have to help briefly, I doubt it'd do anything for more than 15 seconds though.

Why not take the turbocharger off while you're at it - going N/A is sure to cool down AITs a little bit!
