Default Learn me: NASA Classing for TT

Hey guys,

To start off, I just started doing HPDE's last year and I just made my way up to HPDE3 and will be in 4 in no time. I'm scheduled to get my SCCA comp license in April since my local track has a great deal on it. But all this NASA talk makes me want to just into competitive racing, but I've more or less built the car around generic Time Attack events like Gridlife/Global TT. This means I've got a 03 VVT that's probably around the 140ish whp mark, 949 Big Grip kit (800/500), a set of 15x8 or 15x9 with whatever tires (been running RE71's, but can change to any tire). I've got a Rotrex C30-84 kit ready to go in, and I'm planning on having aero this year. It just seems like NASA classing is better for the modifications people actually do these days, and it seems like a better way to get into racing.

So my question is this:

-Can someone learn me the in's and out's of NASA TT classing?
-Is there an easy class that I could convert my car to?
-If you were me what would you do? Hold off on the Rotrex install?
-What is a points based build, and what the hell is a dyno reclass?

It's worth mentioning, NASA in the process of changing the rule-set for the classes. ST4/TT4 was release this year(2017) which replaced PTB/TTB, ST5/TT5 is coming out next year(2018) replacing PTC/TTC & PTD/TTD, and ST6/TT6 is supposed to come out in 2019 to replace PTE/TTE & PTF/TTF.

Start here!
https://www.nasaproracing.com/rules

ST/PT/TT are all primarily power:weight series. There are modification points and adjustment tables that stack on top. These are used to balance the variety of car chassis/platforms and their potential speed. These are the things people get hung up on that are unfamiliar with the rules.
There are excel based calculators on the rules page that make it very easy to plug your current car in and see where it fits.

Thanks lads. Seriously, I've actually been through both your threads this morning. That's partly why I have been so pumped on NASA TT. Looking through these threads now.

It's clear what you guys picked. If you had to do it over again, would you shoot for another NASA class?

To a bit clearer, other than safety stuff which will not change I would run your car as-is in TT if you really want to this year. Things will change and there is no point in throwing away money on parts that might not be legal/optimal in your first year when you'll almost certainly be off-pace anyhow.

-Can someone learn me the in's and out's of NASA TT classing? - Read the rules, sorry it's a shitty thing to say but you have to do it.
-Is there an easy class that I could convert my car to? - Your car as is is likely PTE.
-If you were me what would you do? Hold off on the Rotrex install? - Nothing, cage it and learn to drive. If you really want to run the rotrex skip the PT rules and just read the ST5 rules. If I'm remembering everything right a restrictor plated C30-84 should be about where you want to be power wise.
-What is a points based build, and what the hell is a dyno reclass? You have a motor swap so you can't points class. Points are gone with the new rulebooks anyway.

Yep the other guys here have good suggestions. And yes one of the things is to pick up the rulebook and just start reading. Don't just skim through it though, read, analyze, understand.

With the Rotrex, Aero, etc, ST5 or ST4 is where you're likely to end up.

My build thread contains TT-E stuff as well kind of like the ones you were looking at. I would probably go that route and do a PTE with one star dyno reclass and drive PTE to get seat time and develop driver skill. Adding horsepower and aero always makes the learning curve steeper.
