If you could get everyone to agree on a color and finish then that might be cool. Otherwise Keith could end up with 27 different finishes to deal with. Personally I am just going to spray or powdercoat mine in a TBD color, maybe a flat black.

ericwh 02-08-2013 10:34 AM

Thinking black anodized

vtjballeng 02-08-2013 11:17 AM

That is great news, thanks Keith. Will be getting this and 36-2 tooth wheel. Big advancements on the ECU and Aero front from FM this winter.

On the finishing options, I'd say give the guys a break. It's a small order. Use a can o' spray paint to get the color you want. You could also send yours out to be anodized if you REALLY want it.

Keith@FM 02-08-2013 11:21 AM

No, we don't have any plans for a finishing option. This is what I'd call a race product, it's just to save you the fabrication. It doesn't include the wing, the nuts and bolts and will not come with a book showing suggested wing angles and predicted lap times :) The finish is mostly polished (you can see it in the pictures of just the mounts) and the edges are as the laser left them - clean but sharp.

If there is a big demand for a single finish such as black anodizing, then let me know and I'll look into both the logistics and the cost. Powdercoat would be much simpler.

Paid.

I had a request for a shot of how the mounts attach to the car.

Exactly how I was going to do it but you saved me all of the trouble, and that's worth $100 for rizzy, no shizzy.

Is ANYONE going to offer a copy of this wing seeing as it is so good...?

Seems odd to have available these end plates from suppliers yet only a diminishing supply of COT cast offs....

(or perhaps I am missing something.......)

Well I don't think Keith plans on making any more after this group buy.

Crawford Composites originally made these. They'd probably be willing to make you a new one. I'll call them tomorrow to see what pricing might be like, I expect "painful" would be a reasonable adjective.

mx5-kiwi 02-08-2013 06:24 PM

Thaks Keith, thenuge...

There you go, I was "missing something" after all.

Cheers.

That would be interesting to know Keith. I am about to enter a race class that does not allow aero other than factory/semi factory (called Classic Japanese) but I must admit the allure of aero is very strong!!

Have people done tests on these wings yet and confirmed they work better than the currently available models..? i.e the 3d ones etc...

OR is it just because they are relatively cheap and currently available.......?

3d profile wings are terrible in my opinion for universal application. 3d wings need to be designed per a specific car to optimize the wing for the air flow being seen. 3d profile is for a race team with many engineers designing for optimum downforce, drag, and/or L/D.

I remember reading somewhere they cost upwards of $3000
When new. Don't remember where I read that and I'm sure that figure is a bit
Inflated, so take it with a grain of salt.

Mobius 02-08-2013 11:13 PM

$3k is what I have for a figure as well.

Materials alone for a composite wing this big is probably at least $1k. I know there is no way I could make a homemade copy for what I paid on ebay including shipping.

Keith@FM 02-08-2013 11:17 PM

I'm with Plucas, I don't think 3D wings are a good universal option. It's interesting to note that Emilio is racing with a 2D wing now. Le Mans racers all seem to run 2D wings, although that may be a rulebook artifact.

I wouldn't be surprised to hear a $3000 number for these wings originally. They're really beautifully made - machined ends, that little wickerbill slot, etc.

The reason we all think they were $3000 is because that's what Rlogan stated in the first post of this thread :)

BTW, in digging around I've come to look at the "show car" versions a bit more. It appears that they're awfully similar (and you can pick one up on eBay right now for $150) but have a less robust mounting setup. That, however, can be rectified so they'd be a great budget option to play with.

Mobius 02-09-2013 12:12 AM

So if we're keeping track of finish options, I'm in for black anodized. Or black powdercoat. Anything more durable than the Rustoleum Gloss Black I will totally rock if they come bare.

ThePass 02-09-2013 05:12 AM

Considering how nice the construction of the wing is, having gone over it up close, and considering the cost of construction of such a piece, $3k for a new one sounds very believable.

Just some further data -

Airfoil weight w/attached steel mounts: 6.72 lbs *
My endplate w/hardware: 1.57 lbs
Dry carbon gurney flap: 0.2 lbs
My upright: 1.70 lbs
Hardware including heim joints: 0.71 lbs

Total weight for the entire wing on my car is 14.17 lbs, and I think that's pretty darn good.

*: I trimmed the steel mounts down and relocated the mounting holes, so unmodified ones will be a tad heavier.

$3000 isn't a bad price

The wing I am working on will cost at least that much. A mold for carbon fiber is expensive! The airfoil and endplates will be made from from prepreg carbon fiber with an autoclave. The retainers will be machined 6061 or 7075 aluminum. The mounts will either be waterjetted 6061 or carbon (depends on cost). All mounting hardware is nas except the endplate hardware. This will be very expensive, but I should be able to machine the mold and retainers at work which will lower the cost. The picture below shows the wing. The mounts are not finalized, but the rest is. A lot of cfd went into this design (about a year total)...

Rockin.

Edit: are you going to run the mounts into the bumper supports through the bumper cover ala 949's Crusher, or ... what?
