Here we go, the taller setup with guy wires. When I pulled back hard on the wing, I could see the lower section of the mounts bowing out a bit. Enough to show me how it would fail if it did fail. There was also more side-to-side wiggle than I liked.
Guy wires: problem solved. I put the lower point right where there was the most deformation on my "pull test", and it's solid both sideways and fore-aft. I love this kind of simple fix. I'm not thrilled about the extra drag, but I doubt it'll be a major issue. These weren't needed on the shorter "production" version of the mounts. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1366654681 |
Ignore me, just answered my own question
Russell. |
Shit, I mis-typed... mine is 1/4" plate. Edited my previous post.

Will you be running the tall setup at MRLS? It would be interesting to do a back to back and see what the impressions are between the two. This may be just an evil plot to make us buy more mounts! :vash:

What grade of aluminum and what thickness are you guys using for your mounts that mount to the inside of the trunk. Similar to Flyin Miatas.
I have a GTC-200 that I am making custom mounts for but not sure what to use. just finished my mount for my universal GTC-200 i got from my teammate. i used L stock from ace hardware. |

We certainly CAN make more of the mounts. But our production facility has certain minimum quantities, so we'd need to run another group buy. There's nothing stopping us from changing the dimensions if we do.
My car is definitely going to have the tall setup at MRLS. My own (homebuilt) mounts are shorter than the "production" ones, and I'll do a back-to-back test if I get the chance. The MRLS event does not lend itself well to testing for me, though. It's a bit different being there as a vendor as opposed to a driver. I may have to wait until I get another chance locally for testing. I'm also planning to do some tuft testing with a few other interesting items, and I need the extra height to do that. |
Yeah I was thinking about bringing different gurney flap sizes to experiment with at MRLS but that event isn't really a good test n tune. I, too, am doing vendor ride-alongs, which means driving 9/10ths and basically negating the differences between little setup changes, plus devoting most of the time during the event while not driving to socializing instead of taking notes and playing with settings.
Interested in what your other "interesting bits" will be :) -Ryan |

Slight thread resurection, but I found a half decent pic of my car at Japfest last week. I'm pretty happy with how it came out, still working on aero for the front though.

I've only been on two tracks with the wing and admittedly, I added a splitter, air dam and around 40 who with a good tune, but I cut 6 seconds off my personal best at each track (The Ridge and MRLS).
The wing provides a huge amount of downforce without much drag. My trap speed at The Ridge increased by around 20 mph so it's not just a boat anchor. I've been taking angle out for two full days and still don't have the car balanced yet. :giggle: |
Russell, I'd love to hear the comments when people find out it's a NASCAR wing!

It certainly was appreciated, and more than a few people are now reading through this thread to get some ideas... fingers crossed a few more people start experimenting with Aero over here, as I haven't seen more than a handful of MX5s with anything up to this point. Russell. |

Excellent. Multi-element wings are much cooler than single.

Is the one in the pic a dual? Looks like but can't tell. Moar pics.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1375239451 Looking forward to hearing more about the dual element setup you're working on. I've got some fun parts coming for my own car that would be illegal in most race classes - more when I get them implemented. |

Good to have more new options. The COT wings are getting very hard to find already. The $400/shipped deals are long gone. :sadwavey:
I've got a show wing here at the shop. It's quite a bit different from the race ones, but I'm thinking it could be upgraded with some two-part foam and a couple of spars. Once I have a few things worked out, I'll post details. |
