I suspect the problem lies in the ECU having wireless capability, not the tablet having wireless.

Any hardware that allows a competitor to wirelessly connect to the ECU at any time during competition or post-competition impound is strictly prohibited, regardless of whether such hardware is external or internal to the ECU.
This would be considered external hardware. You would either need to prove that it can't access the ECU (which it can) or that it doesn't have wireless connectivity (which it does)

Not connecting wirelessly. Not an issue. If connecting to the ECU in a wired capacity is an issue, then they need to ban practically every OBD-II logger on the planet. Accessing the ECU is not the issue. Accessing the ECU wirelessly is the issue (at least as the rule is written).

Yeah, but lets get real. The tablet has wireless. It is connected serially to the ECU. Bridging the gap wouldn't be hard.

'Allows' is the issue here.

You would have to prove that nothing can connect to the ECU through the Tablet (seen as a modem/connection point/router).

Wouldn't this disallow any type of antennas/wireless protocols in general (Spot radio?).
Overlaying ECU control over the intercom is not impossible in theory...

Thats not how I read it. Lets assume thats the case though, just for a second. Does that mean that Harrys Lap Timer and an iPhone with OBD-II cable are illegal? What about an AIM data system? Dash DL-1? Racepak IQ3?

My point is, practically every data logger connects to the ECU these days via OBD-II. While its not really applicable in some of our cases (since the cars are OBD-I/not stock ECU), I think the intent is to keep someone from having a pushbutton reflash prior to getting on the dyno in impound. To further that point, outside of one DIYPNP with an internal Bluetooth board that Ive seen, none of the DIYPNP/Megasquirt family has wireless connectivity that I know of.

I do agree that it is poorly worded and this is mostly semantics, but unfortunately when youre sitting in impound, semantics matter.

Not all of them have antennas and protocols making remote telemetry/control possible.

Mechanical connections to the ECU (e.g. through OBD-II) for table switching etc are possible to control, but wireless changes are harder to police.

Predictable problems when using a dyno classification and things start to get tight.

Exactly. How strictly they choose to enforce the rule is up to them, but the rule allows them to ban any device that connects to the ECU and also has wireless connectivity.
