Track duty exh hangers?
 

I broke an exhaust hanger (it took a nickel sized piece of pipe with it) off my 3" enthuza exhaust. I'm wondering if there is something special track guys are using? It was right at the bend to go behind the diff and I had been noticing vibrations against the longitudinal sub frame bracing prior to this in hard rights.

The only way I can envision to spread the load is to have a band clamp (or extra pipe welded between the hanger and pipe) to attach the hanger to the pipe.

Thoughts?

Re-weld it so it doesn't rub on the subframe. Add some bracing, maybe even an exhaust clamp to hold it all down. Looks ghetto but it will work.

Have any pictures? So you broke the actual metal 3/8 rod part off the exhaust?

Yep it's off (it rotated out of the way) with a bit of pipe attached to it.

I figured I'd weld a patch over it then weld the hanger back to that but if the hanger is taking all the stress of holding the exh away + the weight I might need something a wee but more heavy duty. Maybe another piece of rod welded to the pipe over the top and welded to the actual hanger to spread the load like bond did?

If it wasn't between a bend and the muffler, I'd weld a 2" section of pipe the same id as the od of the exhaust over it to attach the hanger to.

Hard rights have always been an issue with this car and it's different exhaust systems.

FYI this is what Mazda does. Far exhaust is OEM Miata, close one is a Mazdacomp exhaust.

Mazda comp welds with mild steel wire while factory uses ss wire?

I appreciate the pics, they anchor much more metal to the pipe than my enthuza had. I think adding a brace will likely do the trick for me, should give the same effect.

My "track hangers" consist of hose clamps around the stock hangers. No rattling whatsoever.

I paid a guy to triangulate all of mine and they quit breaking off after that. I also safety-wired my exhaust (swage/clamp) to the rear subfram to keep it from flying around back there.

My old exhaust had a J - hanger bolted to the subframe between the lower and upper A-arms

You can install those silicone hangers to keep it in place too, once it's fixed of course.

The hanger orientation only controls front to rear movement, I was still melting my bumper and rubbing the diff case before I safety-wired it. It's crazy to see how much I stretch that safety-wire. I'd like to semi-hard-mount it.

i would avoid the urethane exhaust hangers. they seem to creep over time and be more prone to tearing.

Hmm I have some urethane ones that have survived.

I say worm gear them down. Or worm gear plus rubber mount. Or just clamp your hangers directly onto one another?

I melted a large portion of my bumper, and was always rattling on the PPF. Once I threw worm clamps on all the rubber hangers, nothing. No more melting (and I've done two track days since then). Poor man's fix.
