Random questions that didn't seem to deserve their own thread:
When do you need an oil cooler? Pretty much as soon as you take a turbo'd car on track? I don't have a oil temp gauge on my 94 but this was one of the little things I was thinking about as I'm planning to turbo the car over the winter. Besides all the turbo stuff, I'm planning on ducting, possibly a hood vent, and an oil cooler and some temp gauges for water and oil. Any other little things that I may have forgotten? Are stock fans ok? This car will probably see only a few track days next summer (5 at most I'd guess) and 3 season street driving. |

Radiator fans cool the radiator when the car is not moving, you don't really need the hood vent. |

I saw 279*f oil temps on John's NA 130whp car in 95* heat. You don't really need an oil cooler on the street in a turbo car, at least I didn't on street driving.
Radiator fans cool the radiator when the car is not moving, you don't really need the hood vent. I understand what you're saying about the fans, what I was getting at was that shrouds on the stockers block airflow while on track and moving in general so I didn't know if they would be necessary to replace/modify for better cooling on track. |
I have the vent, it works, but never really "needed" it because the car cooled just fine before I added it.

I race Spec Miatas, and considering putting a turbo into the miata. What class would I fall in with NASA/SCCA?

You can check Hustlers build thread for his points list and what class he falls into for NASA TT. Classing varies a shitton depending on what you end up doing.
With my V8 swap I am in TTS, though that is a bit off-topic. |

seriously sooo much fun to drive...I currently live in an apartment building...but as soon as I get a home with a garage, I wouldn't mine buying a car I can slap a turbo into..
|
A 140whp Miata is a poor man's Elise. A 240whp Miata is a poor man's, fuck, I don't know, there's nothing else like it. Maybe a Vette that turns. I recently had a friend who drives very expensive stuff on track get out and say "man that car is fun'. Another guy who get's paid to race cars on TV said "that car does everything well, great car".
I built this car in a 1-car, apartment garage.

And you let someone else drive your car? I'm not sure if I could do that.

i hear ya'. i drove a buddys 600whp c6z06 @ a pca event and it was crazy. it didn't seem very fast till you look at the needle swingin' crazy towards 150mph! once i started sliding sideways at 100mph i knew it was time to slow down. lol... don't what i'd do if i wadded that thing.

well. im not going to read all these increasingly off topic posts im just going to give a bit of input from experience.
My self and teamates have been racing NASA MA&SE for about 6 years now. We have been through every possible performance part, engine mod, diff mod, brakes..etc. The one thing we did that blew tons of money and didnt pay off was turbocharging our race car. sure it was fast. Incredibly unreliable though. a real miata road racer relies on momentum. if you know what i mean, the simple fact of how boost affects drivability when giving throttle strips you of the ability to maintain momentum when half throttling through the apex. the design of a turbo will not allow it. not too mention the other facts: fuel system needs to be addressed as well as cooling. parts have melted, paint has curled and worst of all, because of the nature of WOT racing, a miata motor, fully built or not.. can not withstand the abuse for more than approx 4 races depending on your driving style. Turbocharging is for a "bad ass" street show off car. or for an undisciplined drifter. Learn to drive the car, and you wont need a turbo. |

I beg to differ: My motors last longer than 4 races because they're built right. The car is fast through corners because the chassis and suspension have been developed just as extensively as the drivetrain has. I've got a 120whp naturally aspirated Miata in my fleet as well, and the black car has higher minimum cornering speeds. |

Learn to drive the car, and you wont need a turbo. Unless you're serious....in that case I feel sorry for you. |
